FEATURE: "HEART OF NOW" – a film by SABI

It seems we both have a very similar approach to lighting, Zak. My Hallows Fest film The Art Of Suicide is lit with all natural lighting (with the exception of the "asphyxiation attempt" since the garage was too dark to see anything). I've always done things that way. I think good lighting and cinematography can be achieved with available light, if you know where to find it and how to use it. I didn't know about laying down bleached white fabric for exteriors. I'm going to have to try that on my next project.

Actually, this way of lighting has many antecedants. For example Kazuo Miyagawa used the same principle on Rashomon, except he used mirrors:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rashomon_(film)

"In the shots of the actors, Kurosawa wanted to use natural light, but it was too weak; they solved the problem by using a mirror to reflect the natural light. The result is to make the strong sunlight look as though it has travelled through the branches, hitting the actors."

And there are many innovative cinematographical ideas in that film (f.ex. the first film to shoot directly into the sun etc.).

tonight we did the DVX Talk Radio show. had a blast. was fun talking about the project and answering all the awesome questions from Tony and members of the forum.

thanks guys!

thought i'd post a PDF of the screenplay now that the feature has been shot. in many cases we abandoned the scripted dialogue you'll see here, opting for more natural, and "behavioral" engagement between the actors. we allowed the scenes to evolve from take to take until we discovered all there was to discover by following the emotional truths of the characters while maintaining their underlying objective(s) for each scene. so take it for what it is, a foundation to be built upon in collaboration with the cast and crew.

HEART OF NOW - screenplay, YELLOW REV.

You guys did a fantastic job on Heart of Now! Just watching some BTS clips and stills, amazing. Lots of BTS!
we actually have 15 hours of BTS and after we do interviews with the cast and crew, we'll cobble together a 9 to 12 part series on the making of called INSIDE HEART OF NOW.

Site, photos and footage are all superb Zak. I've been following Heart of Now off and on since you started posting about it...Excited to see more. I'm sure I just missed it but what's your plan for release? If you've already answered this somewhere else you can just point me to it.

Just downloaded the script a second ago. Thanks for putting that out there.

*Shoot me if this has been pointed out several million times but your lead actress is a dead ringer for Amy Adams.

jared,

as we cut the feature, we are exploring all possibilities for distribution. first and foremost we will screen it for cast, crew, friends, family and local press here in los angeles. then, we will tour with it on the festival circuit for a year, then we'll be primed for actual distribution. i'm keen on self-distribution because frankly, there's little reason i can think of for me to sell it to someone else. in the short term, i'd get a pay day, sure. but long term? that's where i'd get screwed. plus, part of me wants to own my work, dammit. so my thinking at the moment is to retain ownership and four wall it, travel with it from city to city, then distribute it online and on home video (dvd and blu-ray) with two hours of comprehensive extras covering the making of it.

thank you for the kind words. you can sign up for the private mailing list to receive news and updates in the future.

btw, Amy Adams, huh? that's the first i've heard that. i can see it. others have mentioned a resemblance to Nicole Kidman in certain shots.
