Question, PDR. Even though the digital video spec is 16-235, if there is picture information present from 0-255, will a television display it or will it be clipped? I've often wondered about this.
If you mean Y' 0-255 (ie. full range video), and assuming you have usable data in that region (many cameras record usable data Y>235 , but rarely Y<16 - it's not clipped it will be displayed , but will barely be visible depending on the TV's calibration. The ITU specs purposely specifiy the range Y' 16-235 to allow for broadcast overshoot and undershoot. If you open up any professional BD or DVD (e.g. from Hollywood) and look in a waveform monitor, you will often see overshoots (but rarely undershoots) . In my experience, your average TV out of the box will barely show anything beyond that range - as expected (more on the white side than black) ; but some models are calibrated incorrectly out of the box.
