GH5 GH6 -- likelihood of the GH6 having RAW

Waveform doesn't disappear when the GH5 is recording. Can toggle the display at any time. "DISP" button.

Not sure how you have your setup but for my GH5 and GH5S I have a button assigned for waveform/vectorscope and the moment I put either into record they disappear and I can find no way to get them to display while recording. Would love to know how to do that. All my recording is UHD 60P if that makes a difference. Doesn't matter if its mov or mp4.

The "DISP " button on both units cycles through, current setup, full indications selected, minimum indications and black screen. Has no effect on whether waveforms/vectorscope is selected.

I have GH5 and GH5S, both working the same. Fn1 assigned to WFM. Go to Operation Lock Setting, turn everything OFF, Cursor/Joystick/Touch Screen/Dial....EXCEPT DISP. Button=ON. Assign a function button to Operation Lock. I use Fn6. Turn on WFM Fn1. Cycle thru DISP Button page until you find one with the WFM/Vectorscope. Press Record. WFM should not go away. You can use Fn6 button to prevent accidentally changing DISP. Button pages. Use DISP. Button to toggle WFM when recording, not Fn1.

Others:
Constant Preview ON
Live View Boost OFF
Histogram OFF
Expo.Meter ON
Monitor Info.Disp. ON
Video-Priority Display ON
Menu Guide ON
LVF Disp. Set
WFM/Vector Scope WAVE

HDMI Rec Output:
Info Display Off
Down Convert Auto
HDMI Recording Control Off
4K/60p Bit Mode 4:2:0 8bit
Live View Mode 60fps
LVF/Monitor Switch LVF/MON AUTO
System Frequency 59.94Hz (NTSC)

Left Hand Dial single photo
Right Hand Dial C1

Gotta' be one of 'em in there somewhere.

Works in UHD 60p as well. I think first thing you should try is assigning WFM to Fn1. As you toggle DISP. Button thru pages WFM should be there in a couple of them.

Yes got it to work but that is a very convoluted way of operating. I just hope they fix in next firmware update. I would just want to press the assigned button like everything else. Will stay with using my Atomos. Have Video Assist on the other camera.

One excellent feature that Panasonic could provide with the next generation of cameras is some built-in memory. It's crazy that we buy $1,500 cameras that have absolutely no internal memory. Implemented correctly, internal memory could be MUCH faster than SD cards, and it would add little to the cost. I bought a 256GB V60 SD card from Amazon for $48 -- imagine what Panasonic's cost would be to buy memory for 10,000 cameras. Yes, such memory will eventually develop bad sectors, but there might also be a way to design a removable door over the internal memory (like a laptop) to make it easy to replace. And there'd still be a slot for an SD card.

Would you be willing to pay $50 for a GH6 with 256GB of high-speed internal memory in addition to one or two SD slots? I would.

I had built in memory on several of my Sony Handycams and after a while stopped using it since to transfer the files the camera had to be connected to the PC and the interface was a great deal slower than a card reader. Not something of great value to me based on past experiences so would actually not want to pay for it. The ability to use large capacity cards or connect a SSD to a USB C connector is of much more value. A battery grip with NVME SSD connector in it would be of real use I think. Powering camera from the USB C would also be great. Since all my projects are long shows, powering and storage are top of my list.

of course, RAW is cool. Yet, we've survived fine without it all these decades. How many actively use RAW video now? Or are we talking about photo's RAW?

I would not care to approach things with a 'we can survive attitude'. We used to survive with horrible dynamic range and super compressed codecs and it sucked. RAW stills is awesome. The same applies to RAW video once the processing power is there. Unless you need to hand over your work right away, RAW processing with enough computer horsepower will be no different than current workflows. Import, adjust, chop and export and along the way you get better everything. The best thing about RAW stills for me is being able to natively adjust white balance and add my custom color profile after the fact. It just produces the best possible quality imho.

Panasonic could, naturally, release two different cameras again and name both of them GH-6, a la GH-5 and GH-5S. With that precedent in mind, there could be a photocentric 47 MPX model and a videocentric 20-24 MPX one. The problem here, however, is that there may not be a videocentric sensor available and they'd have to squeeze more from the current 20 MPX unit with some additional tweaks, increased processing power, etc.

Mind you, Canon has 5D MKIII/IV and 5DS R, which may share the body but not the sensor also. The name then is retained, by and large, for the marketing purposes only.

PS. Panasonic established an alliance with Tower Jazz back in 2014, so it's possible than the new MFT video sensor may come from a source other than Sony but, so far, both TJ and P-nic have been pretty mum about the products that are generated off that partnership.

Sure, all of the features would be nice (I’ve been advocating for RAW video since GH2), but how about for start, panasonic makes AF being usefull and functional? How about they pull some wizardry that others already have in their cameras so when I work with sony and canon cameras (that are shitty in so many other aspects) I don’t have to bite my lips while cursing myself (“darn I wish my m43 cameras can do this..”).

Or how about they figure out a proper viewfinder that will not make people develop cataract after 5 years of proffesional use?

(How come nobody talks about no.1 problem with all these modern cameras - Viewfinder! Just pull any old SLR (spotmatic, FM2, A-1...) and look through it an see what I mean?

8K on panasonic’s AF is a receipe for disaster...30% of my GH4 4K shots were inexplicably out of focus...and I am sure they would appear in focus if they were 1080HD... what will be procentage of out of focus in 8K mode?

YES, definately better photo mode! I am tired of shlepping both systems to my trips just because I need both photos and videos taken there...
How anout stop making bodies bigger and bigger! The whole point of migrating to m43 was because GH2 was soooo much smaller then 5D.... and everuthing else that accompanies them.

And again, I am not a spy! I don’t shoot secret agents meeting in the middle of the desert exchanging floopy discs under the cresent moonlight!

Yes I like clean 6400 ISO, but bigger DR range would be much better then 500.000 ISO SENSITIVITY...!
Whats the point of being able to expose for a performer’s skin that is lit with one single candle, if the candle itself is blown away into ethernal oblivion?

In other words: how about Panasonic does somethning that will make me stay with panasonic...cause I am seriously considering to move back to canon given that I am listening to lies how thing will get better for almost 10 years...

The issue is that the GH5 appeals to a range of users all of which think it is just for them. To answer some of your concerns in my world, I do not shoot stills, do not use the viewfinder at all ( I would happily buy a camera without one as all my shoots are indoors so no need to look at viewfinder because cannot see the LCD in sun), always on a tripod, no real need for image stabilizer, do not use continuous autofocus ( do use touch auto focus all the time and it works just fine from the beginning ). My two requirements easy selection of exposure controls on LCD like false colour and single button selection for these. All parameters like shutter speed, iris and gain always visible on LCD indicating whether they are in auto or manual control ( just like most of the Panasonic and Sony camcorders ). For my use the GH5 or GH5S have most of the things I need. Other than the parameter indications, which need to be done in camera I can cover the exposure controls with the Ninja V I have so, nice to have but not essential. Yes I would like as much DR as possible but accept that things don't grow on trees for free and these extra features cost money and are available even in the Panasonic range. Just not at the price of a GH5. To me that is fair. My reason for getting the GH5 and GH5S were that together they were less than the only other camera I would consider to get UHD 60p at the time. That would be the FS7. Yes it would have more DR etc but fully kitted out a lot more expensive. Now you could get an EVA1 or S1 but still when one looks at lenses, battery supplies etc the combination of GH5 and GH5S is still a lot less. For me now two GH5S would be better than the GH5 and GH5S I now have but when I bought the GH5 there was no GH5S

It is a struggle as Panasonic listens to its customer base and is really trying to make the bast product within a price point. I can't say the same for Canon in the price point. So each brand has a strength and weakness. A lot are tired of 8 bit weak codecs from Sony and Canon and the pat you on the head attitude of "its fine...". Meanwhile Panasonic and Blackmagic are delivering the goods along with audio. This alone makes me want to support Panasonic and hope they get it right on the AF side.

After this firmware update, GH-5 auto focus seems to be improved. At least, this appears to be the case off the videos that I saw.

There are a ton of people that will never afford the L series cameras and lenses myself being one of them. I think the S1H is amazing but I just cannot afford the system and m43 is still an amazing format.

Panasonic would be foolish to eliminate their bread and butter format and only focus on the niche format.

I couldn't agree more. Even for a GH5, if you bought just a couple of months ago, you are talking about $1,500 for the body, $800 for a decent lens, $400 for the XLR adapter, $100 for a cage, $200-300 for SD cards, and you are looking at $3,000 for a basic, run and gun rig. I might be in the minority, but $3,000 is a lot of money to me.

For Panasonic to think that people want to go out and drop another 4k+ on another camera, and get an adapter just so their lenses will still work is crazy to me.

If you are a full-time professional and you've got the income coming in to compensate for a new camera, that's awesome. But for mere mortals who still have to work a regular job, it's just too much.

I don't mind Panasonic catering to pro users at all. But I think that's a much smaller market and there's a lot of competition in that space.

I also agree that the GH5 is a freaking amazing camera and I love it!! I can shoot anything with it, even in low light. To every concern people have about the GH5, there's a workaround.

The GH5 is a game-changing camera much like the Canon 5D mark ii was. There will only be one GH5.

I have always thought the GH5 was a very affordable camera. It brings value above its price. The GH6 will be a no brainer purchase if they bring the advancements. Niche or not, it is up to the camera makers. If Canon decided to open the flood gates and make an awesome 5D mirrorless people would flock back to Canon. Its all about value which is in the features. Something is not expensive if it solves problems for you.

The GH5 is great. It will continue to be useful if one does not want to upgrade to another camera. Marketing to people who can not afford your product or see the value in it does not make sense to me. Panasonic's fate has been sealed - they serve the lower pro video market. Lets face it, stills folks do not fret over the GH series release dates. And there are a fair amount of lower prices cameras out there. They way I see it, they only have one choice - keep on pushing the envelope or folks will stay with the GH5.
