GH5 GH6 -- likelihood of the GH6 having RAW

Do you think there's any likelihood the GH6 will film in RAW? Or do you think the GH6 will just be a similar iteration of the S1H's features?

My theory is I think Panasonic would have no other choice but to include RAW or 6K in the GH6 to win people's minds. However, seeing that 6K seems to be the most politically correct thing to market, they will go with 6K, but omit the RAW option in the GH6. I would be very surprised if they included both.

Also, I'm willing to bet that sometime in 2020 will be the release date, seeing that the GH4 came out in 2014 and 2017 the year the GH5 came out.

I can see 6K 16:9 @ 60p For sure, but i doubt RAW internally - probably externally to a recorder, if the Atomos way ever actually comes to fruition.

I wouldn't be surprised if it does 8K at 30p also, internally to 8bit 4:2:0.

The GH5 had a lot of features added in firmware updates after the camera was introduced, and that was generally well accepted by the camera's owners. The same will probably happen with the GH6.

Will there even be a GH6? Is there a need/desire now that the S1H is out? Will that need/desire pay for the R&D and tooling to make it?

If Panasonic want to kill the demand for the existing lineup of Lumix M43 lenses then yes; should forget the GH6 and see what the take will be without support from lower cost L-Mount options in the highly competitive FF ecosystem with Canon EF and RF, Nikon, Sigma and Sony, all of which seem to be advancing the FF mirrorless goalposts except the latter.

Taking M43 to 6K would be a regrettable mistake if the alternative was 4K 60-120 FPS Raw which would be "game over" for BMD Pocket 4K. But I don't think mirrorless Raw is likely from Panasonic; think of the marketing possibilities given up, new model designation "G6K, GK6, GH6K, GH6KS, G6KH, the alphabet soup possibilities are limitless!

If the GH6 supports RAW I bet it's only going to be external RAW to a recorder. ( hoping the GH6 is a MFT S1H camera, with a similar feature set but with MFT sensor )

It would great as a paid upgrade. I agree, the 6k marketing is probably a forgone conclusion but we all want RAW over resolution. I am sure they know this but will the give it to us? If BM can do it why can't
Panasonic? I also believe the GH6 can be a game over type of camera if they choose to play ball. Which they have in the past.

And just for the record - I won't buy anything that needs to use an external recorder. I might still buy the camera, but internal all the way for me. External is sort of a cop-out imho.

I have the Atomos Ninja V and it is great with my GH5 or GH5S. All my shoots are on tripods so adding the Atomos is no problem and I also get all the exposure controls like waveforms etc that disappear when the GH5's are in record. Means I can record UHD 60P 10bit 4:2:2 and see a nice large monitor too. I am thinking of getting another so both have Atomos to record to and with the new syncX module they will be in sync for multicam too. Since I pan and crop the UHD image in a HD timeline my hope is for an 8K camera that way I can crop in even more from a fixed camera. I will take resolution over RAW because of what I want to do. VLogL is fine for me. Maybe Panasonic will bring ProRes RAW over HDMI to the GH series.

There are a ton of people that will never afford the L series cameras and lenses myself being one of them. I think the S1H is amazing but I just cannot afford the system and m43 is still an amazing format.

Panasonic would be foolish to eliminate their bread and butter format and only focus on the niche format.

Matt from Panasonic said they will continue to pursue M43 aggressively, I would bet heavily there will be a GH6.

I own an S1H and I will certainly get a GH6. I suspect there will be a reverse rotation here. In motorcycles often the high end race bikes get features first and they trickle down to lower CC bikes. I think here we will likely see the GH6 intro new features that S1H can’t do yet to inspire both sales but also because of real physical limitations that require further die shrinking to work on a FF camera.

Shooting off the cuff here but I would not be surprised to see 4k60p AND FHD 120p 10-bit 422 internal on GH6, and better AF and RAW capabilities etc. Auto Focus and slow motion might become a major focus on the GH6 and maybe RAW. Those would be compelling reasons for most.

I also think the S1H is plenty light and portable but there is no denying the size/weight advantage of M43. It feels like a toy compared to the S1H when both are fully setup, and I mean that in the best way. Matt also explicitly stated they still see a lot of advantage in the M43 form factor and I agree. There is also a ton of pre existing investment in glass there and for that reason alone I think they will continue to develop the system.

We will reach equilibrium soon where IQ starts to level out and form factor becomes a really important consideration and M43 shines there.

I think an equilibrium point was reached with the GH5s and how clean it was. If the GH6 can keep that level of noise there is not much more to need from the m4/3rds sensor. If they can add internal RAW the FF option is just a choice, not a necessity. Hopefully they have learned by now that there is a benefit to having both m4/3rds and FF be strong cameras. Hobbling one does not drive buyers to the other.

Would love to see a GH6s with IBIS and internal RAW. That would be a camera that everybody would have...

All my shoots are on tripods so I have no use for IBIS as I turn off stabilization anyway. I have never used either the GH5 or GH5S handheld for that I use my Sony AX100 or more likely the AX53. Raw may be useful if I have really messed up on exposure but not sure will give me any more than VLog for what I shoot. Internal UHD 60P h265 would be useful at times but now I have the Atomos that is more useful for my application. 8K is what I want next as I rarely move the GH5 or GH5S during a show and editing provides the pans and zooms I would normally do with a traditional camcorder. 8K would give me increased range for this approach. My output is still to DVD or Bluray so have no real interest even to master to 4K. Shoot 4K purely to crop, pan and zoom to HD.

For me also a more robust WiFi interface to the cameras for remote control would be a big benefit as both GH5 and GH5S will occasionally drop out link when recording. The other thing I have wanted from the start is to show all parameters on LCD all the time. ie like Sony show iris, shutter speed and gain indicating whether they are in auto or manual. All my Sony's do this so do not see why Panasonic can't as in some modes they do show.

The issue I have with the GH5S is it almost ceases to become a hybrid camera due to the poor resolution stills. I can live without the IBIS as I have done so for decades but to me the entire point of m43 DSLRs was that they could do both stills and video. While it can shoot stills they do not live up to the ability of what even the GH4 could do for stills.

Now that I think about it, I go to the NAB every year, and there has definitely been a movement toward 8K there. At NAB2019, most of the big camera companies showed at least a prototype 8K camera, and a couple of them have production 8K cameras. So it is not outside the realm of possibility for the GH6 to be 8K/30 H.265 with a 32-megapixel sensor. (Or probably a 35-megapixel sensor to accommodate IBIS.) Should take some awesome stills, too.

Fine with 8K in theory, but as pertains to physics I don't most of us would want the compromise. That said, I think if they were to launch simultaneously as a GH6R and GH6S - one for killer 8K video resolution and one for killer low light - which seems likely based on what they've been doing now, that would be cool.

It's a 47 MPX sensor, at least, on based specs.

We will have to see what the Sharp 8K will be like. They said it would be out before the end of the year. I have not used my GH5 or GH5S for stills for me they are purely video cameras purchased because at the time they were the lowest cost way of getting UHD60P. At the time the closest was the FS7 and I think I got both cameras and lens for less the a FS7 with nothing !! My reason for UHD is also not for UHD output but to crop , pan and zoom into the image for HD and DVD output. It is very easy to produce what looks like a multicam shoot of many cameras with just the two GH5's with smoother pans and zooms than I could ever achieve manually and also perfectly timed to action. For me an 8K camera would offer a lot more capability for this sort of editing.

The resolution is a bummer for sure, but I still have 11x13" photos from a 6MP Canon 10D hanging up on the wall, so I think it does decent for online photos. The biggest improvement the GH5S has over the GH4 is the 14-bit RAW photo mode, which can really be pushed around in post.

Waveform doesn't disappear when the GH5 is recording. Can toggle the display at any time. "DISP" button.
