GH4 GH4 V-log?

Still feel like I'm seeing that yellow, uneven blotchiness in skintones (across her cheekbone, for example) that i associate with CineLike D, etc. Might ultimately stick with the Natural profile, even if they do release this soon. This clip does grade well, I must say.

I see what you are saying even on my cheapo computer monitor.

As far as losing customers, how many people owned a GH2 and went to something else, then came back to a GH3 and then went to something else, only to arrive back with a GH4? They know their place, and they know that the next GH camera will pull you back no matter what you bought. I'm sure the next camera will have in camera 10 bit 4:2:2 or maybe even Prores 4:4:4 with log and less (no) delay with the XLR/SDI optional interface box. And it will probably shoot 4K at a billion frames per second and be a perfect match (visually) for a big varicam for use in confined spaces and small b-cam needs. And then no matter what compact camera you are using, or what larger camera you bought, you will come back to Panasonic for the new GHx. And I'm sure the new camera will also have a global shutter (who owns the patent on that now, didn't Kodak sell it or let it expire???)

Canon: I was never able to find the button to shut off the "EVERYTHING ORANGE" feature. :D

Far as grading that one particular clip.... did everyone check/adjust the WHITE BALANCE first? I saw it was not quite perfect to begin with. Also, at what level of pixel peeping do we throw in the towel about skin color and just admit it looks and works perfectly fine? There is some orange patchy, some red patchy (Probably magenta, yellow, and green patchy too if we look hard enough) but OVERALL, if we grade, step back and press play, it all rolls up together and looks just fine.

We don't know if SHE was more orange/peach or reddish colored to begin with.

I'm not complaining. The Natural and Portrait profiles on the GH4 don't suffer from the uneven skintones and that's good enough for me. But the blotchiness is definitely not her. I see it everytime I switch over the CineLike, and I saw it in some early V-Log L I was able to shoot privately a couple months back. But again, I'm perfectly happy with the Natural profile. It looks fantastic.

Actually I have used Canon, and I prefer Panasonic colors/gamma - also when it comes to skintones. But hey, I guess we all have our preferences. Not trying to get into a 'this is better' argument :)

Yeah - all personal opinon I agree. I was blown away when someone showed me there underwater canon footage - I was like, what filters did you use? He was no, no filters, just manual white balance - I was awestruck - this coming from someone (me) shooting Panasonic and Sony.

I'm hoping that VLOG will go some way for me to produce similar colours as the canon underwater - I'm not buying a canon! LOL

Natural does look good. With with all the settings at -5 except contrast and hue at +1 skin tone is nice. YMMV

accdg to hearsay, panasonic peeps are split. there are those who want to release this and there are those who dont.
It sounds like they might be saving it for GH5 ... whenever it comes out.

And now, here we are back at the crippling the camera conversation. I honestly haven't believed the camera crippling hype, and I guess it's not exactly fair to lump v-log in with that, but at the same time it is a feature that's tested and works, by all accounts, and yet they may not release it... why? Because they're afraid people won't buy their video cameras? Newsflash, it's about form factor. Whatever form factor people need, they will get. If they need xlr inputs, and a shoulder mount, then they'll get the DVX or varicam. If they need a small inconspicuous run and gun, or need to do it on a budget or need photography and video? They'll get a hybrid.
GH4 should have conceivably contained an internal 10-bit 4:2:2 (even if a faux 4:2:2) @ 200 Mbps. It may have cost another $200-$400 but, since it can send a 10-bit 4:2:2 out and record @ 200 Mbps in 1080p, it should have had these features from the start.

As to V-Log, if a feature isn't ready at the time of the release, it can be added later via firmware - provided the processor is capable. The current hesitation on V-Log seems a marketing decision more than an engineering one.

Yep Maybe...I herard the same....
So, if GH5 is announced in August/September and then comes out in January with an Alexa like quality image ...

Panasonic has a tendency to look a tad towards green and colder tones, so I can imagine with underwater footage and its blue cast - this may become too much if it is not corrected. Canon on the other hand is on the warm side of the spectrum, so maybe underwater is where Canon truly shines :)

I checked the WB off her lace under the fur coat. It looked pretty spot on to me. And I agree, I think the quality of this picture is amazing for what it's coming off of. I bet with the right colorist on a high-budget film, this could look indistinguishable to the Alexa.

If the GH5 would have 1080p120, 4k60p, 10bit color and V-log it would be quite some camera and worth the wait. I would think the GH4 will eventually get the V-log update but it might be withheld for the DVX-200 and GH5 sales. A while ago Panasonic was looking for input regarding upcoming GH models so it looks to me they are taking the AF-100 energy and putting it into the GH line and DVX. Great things to come.

422 internally might be really big and too much for slow, little SD cards. I'm thinking there is a reason the 7Q+ and Showgun are around $2000, for processing and speeds. I bet GH4 does the best it can with it's engine and cards. The competition at the time, like BM4K, have much more expense in SSD recording media to do what they do.

AT LEAST GH4 can shove 10-bit 422 out the HDMI to record, verses not at all, so that is something!

I do not think card speed is an issue with compression being so good these days. AVC-Ultra goes down under 50mbps for 1080p60 4:2:2 10bit. Not that the GH5 would ever have AVC-Ultra though. Plus SD cards are pretty fast as well. Just depends upon how far they want to take the camera.

I mentioned this in the NX1 thread - Windows 10 claims to do H265 and, with that, most popular editing suits should respond likewise. Microsoft is obviously making a major push with Windows 10, so the lag time should be minimal. AVC-Ultra is likely to remain the domain of their high end models but, should GH5 have H265 @ 200 Mbps (bits, not bytes), it'll be ~ ProRes 444 in (mathematical) quality.

Am I the only one who is really happy with the great colors and gamma that the Panasonic engineers produced in their profiles, like Cine-V? I understand the use and creative possibilities of log and LUTS, but with Panasonic camera's I'm just happy I don't have to go through extra steps to get it right in the first place.
I think you may be. ;-) The color accuracy of the current profiles is relatively poor, with the CINE profile being the worst offenders.
