GH4 GH4 favorite shooting settings?

Out of curiosity, was the GH4 shot at Cinema 4k and conformed to a 3840x2160p timeline, or was it just shot at QHD?
I've seen video from the GH4 at C4K and QHD, and C4K is the sharpest, cleanest I've ever seen.

I stuck with UHD at 30P for this. But yes, the Cinema 4k has a slight detail edge to it.

Here is the Gh4 up against the AX100 and BMC4K.

All three cameras have their strengths and weakness. The Gh4 is fun to work with though. Lots of controls at your fingertips when you set up the custom functions.

Watch in 2160p but I find watching 4K stuff on Youtube better in 1440P as my monitor is 2500 pixels and the stream flows better.

Shot on three separate days per camera.

BMC4K shot in film mode Prores. Sigma 17-55
AX100 shot using standard profile in XAVC-S
Gh4 shot with 4K 100 Mbit using Cine D profile with sharpness at -3 and contrast minus 3, everything else zeroed. Lumix 12-35mm

All cameras set to 5600K then Color corrected in FCPX. AX100 de-sharpened in post (its the sharpest of them all).
Gorgeous footage! Thanks for posting.

Would you say the moire in the GH4 at 1080 is about the same as the moire in the GH3?

From what I remember its probably the same. 4K however is near spotless. It's funny, my AX100 down samples to 1080 internally very very well. Gh4, not so much. I can't get the Gh4 to hook up to my Ninja 2 (anyone had success with this). I would like to see the camera in 4K mode shooting to prores 1080.

For those that have the camera, has anybody seen anything even near the 100 Mbits Panny says is possible in 4K mode? Highest I've seen is 82 Mbits. I see averages of 77-79 Mbits in most footage.

Nope. I'm averaging 80Mbps in 4K UHD mode too. The same for 1080p 200Mbps mode. I have subjects in shallow focus with a slow shutter and a very flat picture profile though. Perhaps a more focused, detailed, colorful shot would really stress the codec's bitrate?

Same issue here. 71-82 in C4K mode at 24fps. Wonder if 30p 4K mode is higher bitrate?

We need a GH4 hack pronto :)

So Dusty are you saying the process built into the Sony for down sampling 4K to 1080 is very good. If so...that's a great feature to have. Thanks for the tests BTW!

Yes, the AX100s internal 1080 is very very clean. Gh4, not so much. I don't care how many bit rates you throw at it, if the 1080 has internal artifacts it's worthless to me.

100% agree after extensive tests that I would not shoot 1080p on a GH4 unless I absolutely needed >30fps. 4K and downsample all the way!

Well, unless I wanted that "DSLR low-res" look deliberately :)

Yep, I been looking at 1080 in cam between the Gh4 and the AX100 and the AX100 is killing the Gh4. Night and day. Horrible implementation of internal downsampling on Panasonic's part.

Used an old codec breaking chart and got 82.1Mbps in C4K 24p

So far I'm underwhelmed by this camera. it basically has decent in camera recording at 4k (theres a considerable crop in 4k mode compared to 1080) but all the other recording options are average dslr limitations we've been living with for a while now i.e: moire, low DR, 8 bit color. I was hoping the high bitrate was going to add something but I'm not impressed. I'll start playing with footage to see what can be done with the 4k in post but I'm not expecting much.

Dusty, Do you think the 1080 in the GH4 is worse than the 1080 in the GH3?
I sold my Gh3 long ago, but I would say it's very similar. I know I won't be using the gh4's internal 1080 unless in a pinch. But I didn't buy the Gh4 for 1080. I think (feel) that if you want a great 1080 camera the C100 is about as good as it gets. I have my C100. Considering selling it because I just love 4K, but now I'm not sure.

Yeah I saw a comparison where the C100 looked about as sharp as the GH4 4K. I have a feeling the C series would look better on a big screen if that was the goal...given the other advantages the Canon's seem to have - DR, color processing, etc.

I guess this would only be great with 4k + shogun and 96fps
otherwise, 1080p is same as before

it looks like its base iso is 400? Feels like a tweaked gh3 sensor with better memory and processing for 4k
any comments on DR?

Why 400iso? It seems the stills are maxing out iso at 100.

I agree the 1080 looks just like the GH3 which can look great. The 4k to 1080 is really lovely though... I will be buying a wider lens this week.
