I've got my GH4 (and a second one just arrived at home) and will be playing with different shooting settings this weekend with some friends.
We might not post anything here (I'm done with the old "post a test and get criticized" thing) but depending on results (and how friends feel), we may share some stuff at some point. Sorry but don't want to over-promise.
Anyway, do you guys have any favorite setups so far? I can at least provide good feedback on how those setups compare when I test them.
I'm assuming that the footage that will go through a good post pipeline - eg Resolve - and have at the very least a 3D LUT applied. Add Neat Video if necessary (if less NR in camera + Neat Video gives a better result than more NR in camera, let's do it). Plus de-banding to get rid of 8-bit issues if necessary (S_deband) etc. I would be nice to have as fast a pipeline as possible though - so if Neat Video and de-banding can be avoided, awesome.
Anyone shooting with IR cut filters? Anyone shooting 3200K with a CTB filter and WB at 5000K? Anyone doing low-con, digi-con, etc?
What is the best setup for:
a) sunny daylight, uncontrolled contrast
b) cloudy daylight, uncontrolled contrast
c) daylight, controlled contrast (studio with HMI / daylight LED)
d) tungsten, uncontrolled contrast (eg filming an event)
e) tungsten, controlled contrast (studio with tungsten / tungsten LED)
f) mixed light, low light (eg nighttime street shooting)
One more thing to add into the mix - the desired goal:
a) match Alexa
b) match Dragon
c) match Sony F55
d) match Canon DSLR video
e) match Canon C100/C300/C500
f) FLATTERING - match motion picture film (Kodak or Fuji)
g) FLATTERING - match a good DSLR still (Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Hasselblad, Leica with good processing)
h) CORRECT - get a scientifically-correct result (which can then go through ACES or be used for VFX)
Currently, playing with the various color profiles, I'm noticing some odd stuff in the highlights. It's definitely more apparent in the monitor than the final image but I notice sometimes that if I'm filming a gradient of something desaturated, there will be a sudden band of yellow introduced at a certain luma point.
I'm not sure whether this is an inherent sensor issue (and I just should avoid placing any key color detail in that exposure range and treat it as "highlight safety") or some kind of color matrixing issue that a combo of picture profiles and WB settings can fix. Thoughts?
Overall though, this is an awesome camera.
