GH2 Tests (with a gh13 perspective)

...I can only get the gh2 to send 1080i out (once you start recording you get some sort of 24p pulldown inside of 1080i)...

I wonder if this is why Panasonic is very reluctant to include 25p in the PAL version? 25p is really easy to extract from 50pF (just change the flag from interlaced to progressive). Perhaps it would be too much of a direct competition to the AF100 in PAL countries? Unless it's proper 24pF, that is.

Has anyone confirmed/denied that GH2 is "hackable" yet ?

I would think it's the same story as with previous G cameras, we will know for sure once a body firmware is available from panasonic and if they have implementet some securitymeasures this time around...

Four magic words:

Post...the...native...files

Ok 5 words....

Please???

Post them on vimeo.... mail them to me and I'll host them.. I really like to see them to see them BEFORE they go through prores and
then stills...

Sorry, but I think this is one of the serious flaws that invalidated this test. The difference in framing of the GH1 image produced significantly more lens flare and overexposure from the direct sunlight than is visible in the GH2 image. That alone could account for the differences in the two images.

Relax bro. The man was not well and took the time to do the test - to call it invalid is a bit strong me thinks. Scientifically sound and perfect - perhaps not to your standards but - hey you learnt something new about the GH2 right. Can't be a bad thing. If it's not your thing...........move along.....nothing to see here.

To make a valid direct comparison between any two cameras, the framing must at minimum be locked down in the same position and preferably on the same tripod. In addition, lighting and exposure must be matched as closely as possible. Significant differences in ISO sensitivity between GH1 and GH2 cameras have been documented here:

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/en/Camera-Sensor/Compare-sensors/%28appareil1%29/677|0/%28appareil2%29/630|0/%28onglet%29/0/%28brand%29/Panasonic/%28brand2%29/Panasonic

Yes, I read what you said, but all I can say is, I don't see that large of difference in compression artifacts when I shoot with two 7Ds in scenarios where they are not exactly the same. I go over this footage very closely when I am compositing motion 3D models into moving scenes. That difference in the artifacts is A LOT.

Regardless, there is a REALLY easy way to test this: (1) Record with GH2 on top, then (2) Record with GH13 on top, just switch their positions. Leave the tripod and angle the same. Then you have 4 comparison points.

Yes, I understand that it was meant as a casual comparison rather than a rigorous test. My point, however, is that the flaws in the tests are in fact serious enough to invalidate the original poster's conclusions. For that reason I don't believe we learned anything new about the GH2 from this test.

Excuse my ignorance but isn't that what we want? 24p has been embedded in 60i for years right? All we need to do is pulldown removal.

Hunter - is seeing the interlacing streaks on the monitor akin to playing an interlaced file on a progressive screen? Even my 24p ( 60i embedded ) HFS10 footage has the streaks when playing in software that does not remove the 3:2 pulldown.

Sorry to be a pain one more question - prior to pressing record is the resolution less than full HD? Also does the actual resolution drop when record is pressed or is it just interlace streaking?

I'm keeping my hacked GH13 as a back-up for my GH2 (when it arrives). I see my GH13 as relatively inexpensive "insurance" if my GH2 ever dies, at the very least; plus the GH13 is a darn-good cam anyway. The GH2 doesn't change that

Exactly. If somebody has to sell a GH1 for a few hundred bucks to be able to afford a GH2 then he/she is in the wrong business. For God's sake donate it to somebody if you don't want to keep it.

I think you mean "I" (you) didn't learn.
Well, I didn't learn much new information either, although I've found the test and Hunter's efforts to be valuable and grealy appreciated. Is it possible to ask questions in hopes of getting answers?

I was watching sportscenter earlier today and the Lebron vs. coach was on and Van Gundy was making the point that you can't take any merit from undocumented, off the record sources.

It's funny that the whole other thread was without any footage to back it up, or knowing what it was shot at, or even what stage of the camera it was, but yet he wants mts files from a guy who has both cameras... If there's any merit to a person's credibility then it would come from a person who has both cameras in front of him.

From a HMC150 owner if the 100 is as clean as this older camera then there's virtually nothing to worry about with the noise atleast. Mud is something I've not ever seen but that's a CCD camera too. We'll all get to see it pretty soon and If I did own a Gh13 then it wouldn't be a big deal to buy another one unless of course you are doing Chinese Buffet commercials for trade out...

So even when it's put out on this thread it still flares up....

This is a great test. It looks like one of those times the gh13 breaks up (for whatever strange reason)

I have been seeing gh2 codec break-up in many video tests posted on the web before its release. I'm not talking about the vimeo/yt compression. This happens in the raw mts files. But hey, if its better in some situations. great! I'll just leave the gh1 for high bitrate 720p

Or if it really happened at all.

LOL - will shoot for food.... it may come down to that in the end.

Of course you can ask questions. And hopefully expect them to be answered. Your response also makes you and Ipowell an official "we."

Better?

I just want everyone to know this wasn't a "how can I discredit the GH13" test, but instead a "is the Gh2 anywhere near as good as my gh13" test.

In fact it was a personal out of the box test for me I never intended on sharing, but after looking at the footage- I thought a lot of people would appreciate seeing it too.

I also knew people would say some negative stuff and try to discredit what I did (I dont care) please do your own testing, but if you have an opinion, bring your own footage to the table.

For everyone else, I hope this very small look at the gh2 helped you see that it is a camera worth owning (just like the gh13 is!)

I shouldnt, but Im uploading the .mts panning videos right now. Ill link to them in about an hour when they are finished uploading.
