GH2 Rumors Thread

I'm buying a GH1 soon... should I wait until a potential announcement of the GH2? I should expect this would create a price drop in the current model.

Unless they stop selling it like they did with the G1, in which case you won't be able to get a GH1 at today's prices.
It also looks like the announcement of the GH1 successor might only come in 6 months, in which case you need to wait a long time.

I was expecting Sony to make a serious foray in to this sector, but the mirrorless cameras they displayed at PMA (mockups) are hardly as exciting as I had hopped, and are planned to cost significantly more than a GH1. So that won't drive prices down. Maybe the Canon T2i will.

Decisions, decisions...

Can someone tell me what's that I see at the bottom?

Also, look at the new prices of some of the cameras.

nice find.

is this the official first spotting of the g2 and g10?

if you click either the g2 or g10 images nothing happens but if you select them to compare you get a list of specs (although limited):

Great find!

Finally some official information. New cameras are the G2 and G10.

From comparing the specs, it looks like the new models both gain ISO 6400 and a touchscreen which the GH1 doesn't have. Battery life is a bit better. It goes downhill quickly from there:

G2 seems to lose the EVF.
Less sensor resolution - 12 mp available only in 4:3 ratio. in 3:2 and 16:9 you get less pixels.

Video - G2 uses AVHDC lite, NTSC: [HD] 1280 x 720, 60p (sensor output is 30fps)
G10 maxes out at MJPEG 720 30fps.

Mono microphone

Very disappointing...

Sold my GH1 in favour of another 7D instead. I had the same feeling when selling my Nikon D90. They are both great cameras but not up to the Canons as of now.

Is it really that surprising that Pana (and Sony) limit their video-in-photocamera offers to a certain degree?
Only thing for sure is, that Pana ALWAYS listens and will come up with sth that everybody was craving for.
And as long as this new VIDEO cam records to P2 media, they´ll get their revenues back, even if some Varicams less are sold...
This 5D thing is exploding right now and maybe they are changing their rollout plan as I write here.
I hope for sth at NAB, but this would seem a little rushed though...

i can't see it. did they take it off their website?

Thinking some more about it, my __GUESSES__ now are (if Panasonic announces 2 cams between now and FOI on March 7):

- The 1st cam, the smaller one, will be similar to their new ZS7 compact model, but with a m4/3 size sensor instead of 1/2.3" size. It will have a non-removable zoom lens & a non-swivel LCD. It'll record very nice 1080p & 720p AVCHD video using Panasonic's already announced new Venus Engine HD II at up to 17 mbs/sec. Essentially it's a updated version of a GF1 but without the removable lens mount. This allows Panasonic to later refresh the GF1 with updated electronics w/o butting heads with the cam they're announcing now. This cam will have a list price less than the current GF1.

- The 2nd cam should be thought of as more a video-capable update/replacement for the G1 rather than the GH1. Its form factor will be almost exactly the same as the G1/GH1, but very slightly smaller & lighter weight. It'll have a m4/3 sensor, m4/3 lens mount, EVF & swivel LCD like the G1/GH1 (the LCD may be somewhat higher-res than the G1/GH1). Essentially it'll be a less-expensive version of the GH1, but with refinements such as slightly improved 1080p & 720p video quality via the new Venus Engine HD II at up to 17 mbs/sec. It will have AGC audio level control only. It may have live video out during recording, but the LCD & EVF may turn off when HDMI is connected. This cam will be Panasonic's answer to Canon's new T2i/550D and will be priced accordingly (e.g.: ~$900 US including a zoom lens).

This Spring/Summer (maybe by NAB in April?):

- Panasonic will announce their "7D killer": This 3rd cam will be the true replacement for the GH1. It'll have a form factor similar to the GH1 and all the features of the 2nd cam described above, but with a new improved m4/3 sensor (global shutter? back-illuminated?), much higher res swivel LCD (at least 1MP), slightly higher res EVF, up to 24 mbs/sec AVCHD video, further refined video processing/quality, allow simultaneous live HDMI video out & on-board video monitoring, and allow some amount of manual audio control _and_ a headphone jack (please!). This cam will list for ~$1,500 US including the 14-140mm zoom lens.

Although this 3rd cam will be a big improvement on the already very good GH1, its form factor and "mini" I/O connectors will still leave room in the product line for additional production-friendly features to be offered in a later "traditional" style camcorder based on its technology ...

Before the end of this year (could conceivably be announced at NAB but not ship until Photokina in Sept. or late 2010):

- The 4th cam will be Panasonic's "EX3-killer" (and kinda its "2/3-in. Scarlet-killer") and list for around $7,500 US. It'll include pro video cam features such as further improved video quality (B-frames? Variable frame rates? Can you do AVC-Intra with SDXC cards?), quasi-shoulder mount form-factor, "big" batteries, a m4/3 lens mount, removable servo-zoom lens (and other lenses available from 3rd parties), live HDMI & HD-SDI out, XLR audio connectors, TC, etc. It's easy to imagine this cam could become part of a family of prosumer/pro video cams based on m4/3 tech, eventually replacing all but the least-expensive of their 1/3" prosumer/pro video cams.

I don't believe any of the above is particularly far-fetched. Of course all these cams will include SDXC card support, too (is there a reason they wouldn't?)

Anyway, that's my blue-sky m4/3 product schedule for Panasonic's coming year. All pure speculation of course. :-)

When I wrote the above a month ago, I was curious to see if Panasonic would release a replacement for the G1 -- the just-announced new G2 -- with pretty much all the same features of the current GH1. Not really a surprise: They did not.

If they had, it would have signaled the replacement for the GH1 would be available very soon, much sooner than the rumored "late 2010" time-frame. But since the new G2 doesn't have 1080p video, and only 720p with 30/25 fps recorded as 60/50 fps, it obviously doesn't butt heads with the GH1 at all. Again, not a real surprise, but I was holding out hope maybe things were moving along a bit quicker than seems to be the case.

For myself, I was hoping the new G2 would be good competition for the Canon T2i, but it doesn't seem to be. Sure, the G2 has a swivel LCD & a nice EVF, but I think the T2i wins this round, unless the G2 will sell for far less than the T2i. Bottom line, I want 1080p, and the G2 ain't got it, so at least that decision has made itself.

So ... unless Sony drops a bombshell in the next few days/weeks (could happen -- they're making lots of noises), I may finally have to break down and choose between a GH1 and a T2i. Which, when it gets right down to it, is not really such a bad circumstance to be in! Reminds me of the curse of living in interesting times!

10 years ago, i don't think anyone gave a rats ass what new replacement camera was coming out after they bought theirs. they shot with what they had. and they shot constantly. i miss that.

and i am only talking video, not film cameras.

Hi Chris: He he! I hear you. Although wasn't it more like 20 (?) years ago, when Betacam cams were the norm? But really, was there ever a time when "no one" gave a r*ts *ss about new cams, replacement or otherwise?

Obviously, the emphasis should be more on the quality of the work, and less about the tools, but many, many folks have been very interested in the latest & greatest video cam tools for a long, long time.

Besides, this is the GH2 rumors thread, not the "content is king" thread. :-)

BTW, Chris, you've got some nice shooting on your Vimeo page. Keep it coming. Peace.

great. no 24p. worthless.
toss this one if the garbage bin. way to go you god damn morons.

How 'bout we just turf that frame rate dinosaur from early last century. Or failing that, ban film-people from using video so the rest of us non-superstitious types can enjoy 30 and eventually 60 frames-a-second (see Showscan). Time to move on. Like those who swore only by black & white film because color was "too real."

RBG

RBG, I really don't see anyone, anywhere, stopping you from doing exactly that. Every 24p camera I can think of, also offers 30p. So, go right ahead -- toss your superstitions to the wind, shoot whatever you want at 30p. Or, buy a 60p camera -- there's no shortage of those either.

Just -- how about while we give you the freedom to shoot what you want at the frame rate you want, you leave us with the same freedom to shoot what we want at the frame rate we want? Sound reasonable? Great.
