GH2 official discussion thread

nothing looked like 60i since i begun viewing. not here and
not on the monitor.

When you first got it going you said it was a 60i view - did you mean it was 60p? (or did it look like 24p even when not recording on the gh2?)

* If it looked like 24p, then we have already won, capture that action! :) If it looks like you got 60p, then that is also a great win, we just have to also try to get 24p (which may be when the gh2 is recording)

at the moment it looks as it will be unreliable and problematic. i cannot solve the framerate issue now.
i cannot get any other input to the card except 60i.
it all looks very unstable.
maybe a ninja could get stable results, but the framerate issue is THE problem.
what's the use of 60i with it's crappy resolution? maybe there's an option of 60i captured as 60p, but it's not real 60p res anyway. no use.
so we need to investigate on the 24p with/without camera recording. but i'm not very optimistic.

yea but then the framerate problems started. someone needs to sit with this seriously a whole day and experiment. i call it a night.

If you take the juddery stuff you captured, thats all we will need.
From that we can tell if the card recorded in 60p (which means the gh2 was putting out 24 probably), and we can take those progressive frames and see if its 4:2:2 for real, as well as determine overall quality.

Ok, you sound very emotional, because you are obviously excited to get it going :). This needs to be approached systematically.
1) Switch to 24P Cinema Mode. Try all applicable frame rate settings on the card (24P in NTSC speak is actually 23.976P). Leave the camera HDMI setting on AUTO. Note which settings work. Record a short clip when it works and post the ProRes file. Don't worry too much about how it looks at the moment.
2) Switch to 1080/60i mode. Repeat.
3) Switch to 720/60p mode. Repeat.

Thanks for testing!

He is extremely close to the finish line, closer than anyone else has gotten to this point.
In any case, with the material posted, we can tell a lot about the future possibilities for the gh2.

i noticed the capturing was 30fps, so i still don't know how you change that. the result are jerky footages or fast motioned, after a second or two.

i'm burning the files to dvd (about 6 captures, about 1 g each)

how can i upload those sizes (tell me what to do with the files, maybe you have a payed account somewhere so i could upload faster?)
or just use mediafire?

What's so odd, is that anyone that has a GH2 at the moment, and a Nano etc, can hook the two together,
and shoot in under ten minutes a test. All would be confirmed, and this chatter of it working- not working would be diminished.

So who owns a Nano and GH2? Anyone? It takes only a few minutes of testing to know the truth and post it!

30 fps either means 60i or 30p... I'm guessing because the 24p motion was really jerky, it was 30p (which is a good thing to see if its real 422; and if 24 was captured in 60i it would not be all that jerky as it would at 30p)

Sorry, the best I can think of is media fire... try uploading the smallest jerky one first.
Methinks the problem is that the card gets confused depending on the first stream it detects going into it. Because the gh2 is supposedly 60i until you record on it, the next best thing to try would be to connect the black magic card only after the gh2 is recording. Then maybe it would detect the 24p stream and auto capture at 24p. If not, the card needs to be set to 24 first, then connected while the gh2 is recording.

but they're all 1 g each, I can't even cut
Them cause my pc at home won't play them

How long would it take to put up just one jerky progressive file? (in reality thats all that is needed)

*also, you'll need quicktime to play it, and premiere will support it (not vegas though, i think)

*and I forgot, for the file that you post, try to post the same 24p that the gh2 recorded simultaneously

Me and other fellows have been in touch with a new GH2 user, he is member of this forum. I will not post who is, he can do it by himself. That's the information received:

"I'm pretty sure the 1080 output coming out most of the time is 60i, it looks just like the 60i when it's played back though I don't quite understand the comments about "streaming AVCHD" over the HDMI port. I don't see the compression there that's present on the recorded footage. Once the TV becomes free I'll try it out again. I'm getting more suspicious that when in cinema (24p) mode or variable stream mode (which uses cinema mode) it really is sending out a 24p signal. Otherwise I don't see why there would be this in the GH2 manual:

During [24P CINEMA] and [VARIABLE MOVIE MODE] playback, please set [HDMI MODE] to
[AUTO]. For settings other than [AUTO], it cannot output at 24 frames/second

Since 1080i is an option and if it were selected it should have no trouble playing back a 24p movie if it had been output in a 60i wrapper. So I highly suspect cinema mode is sending out a true 24p signal, a modern TV with an HDMI input should be able to handle it since it's a blu-ray standard. It definitely LOOKS progressive (but then again so does the 60i mode, it's really quite good when viewed on a TV).

About audio, I never noticed sounds coming out of the TV's speakers but I can check again. It's probably silent to prevent feedback between the GH2's mic and the TV's speakers."

There is more:

"The GH1 had 24p wrapped in a 60i wrapper, on the GH2 the 24p is native, no wrapper is present. I had thought they might be wrapping it for their HDMI signal but apparently not, it sounds like it is 24p native also judging by the manual. It was funny because before I started recording the image was dark (I was inside) but as soon as I started recording in 24p mode it lightened up, since in 24p mode the shutter speed can go down to a longer time vs when in 60i mode.

And I turned the volume on the TV all the way up and there was absolutely no sound coming out, again if it did you would have feedback nightmares between the camera's mic and the TV's speakers"

Same GH2 user. Man, thank you again.

Edit: I forgot to say he has no HDMI recorder, he only attached the camera to 1080 TV.

Yeah, a dude said to me he is running it into a samsung syncmaster px2370 through hdmi and when he looks at the signal information it says 1920x1080i 59.94 PP. And in another 1080/60p TV, it says its getting a 1080i signal.

He also said it looks progressive but it says 1080i. He said he has no idea what is coming out, the TV and monitor say 1080i but its obviously progressive. Some sort of 24.98psf or something. He didn't have hdmi to check.
