GH2 official discussion thread

What is the crop factor if we use 2/3" lenses with the zoom mode?

Thanks, Jay

If (and I repeat, If) in crop video mode the GH2 sensor diagonal got reduced to 8mm (the same size as 1/2" chip cameras), then when you mount a 2/3" lens you got a 1.48x multiplying factor.

A typical 18x4.2mm super wideangle 1/2" broadcast lens (23mm equivalent in 35mm photo format), become a moderate 6.2mm (33.5mm eq.).

Ok - lets go on with it. This is the second part of original footage taken at the Photokina in Cologne by a friendly guy, who don´t want to be mentioned. The first one you´ll find here: vimeo.com/15220471

Same camera (different lens), same settings. But this time the Panasonic Lady switched "face detection" and "focus tracking" on. And that became a bit of a problem for the camera, because that guy didn´t shoot in every scene some people or faces. But the camera was always "trying to get a face in focus". And on other subjects the af-function worked very, very slow.

Update: Sorry guys by request of the owner + shooter of this clip I have to delete this link. I accept and understand it.

Ok, in the posted 720/50p footage B-frames are nowhere to be found. Very perplexing development, as the footage Vitaliy received privately does have B-frames. Vitaliy, can you please post full StreamEye screenshots (with bitrate, fps, etc. information)?

I think that you are off with calculations.
As crop of GH1 (and GH2) sensor in 16:9 mode is only 1.8x.
Plus 2.6x multiplier. So, overall crop must be around 4.7.
And this makes 1/2" lens to be around 20m at wide end (4.2*1.8*2.6).

That I really want to see is 2:2 crop mode. So, each pixel in image will be represented by four bayer pixels. And only 1.3x multiplier - just perfect for many C lenses :-) But this is pure fantasies.

I save this for Chris.
He'll publish screens of his Stream Analizer (he already updated it to support GH2).
OK?

PAL Version in 1080 24 or 25 frames
Sorry, no 25fps possible or planned right now. Only true 24fps, which was requested when there were wishes for a GH2. I never saw a request for 25fps..

That's just stupid. Everybody knows that the cinema framerate in Europe is 25p. So it is TRUE 25p and not 24p. They need to fix this. When listening to customers they shouldn't switch off their brains. And I don't want to use the crippeled 50i mode with 17Mbps to somehow get 25p.

I think this is the reason, why Panasonic does not want footage from these Pres Series models to be out and about.

I got the official information by a sales of Panasoinic, that the GH2 will has/ or will have B-frames as the first camera in the G line.
Maybe some of the cameras at the Photokina are not the way they will be in the final model.

Or, other solution, but a very stupid one:
At the Panasonic stand there were GH2 and G2 cameras.
Maybe the person who shot the clip accidentally filmed with a G2?

100% agree. 25p 1080 is essential for Europe users.

How about 30 min limit for "PAL models"?
it means that when you select PAL mode (1080 50i), 30min limit turns on?

If they'll do this it'll cost them many dollars in support costs. As people do not expect this behaviour.
I already proposed pretty legal solution - secret key combination to remove limit suplied with all non-Europian kits (and not supplied in Europe) :-)

I am totally with you.
I was just quoting a guy from a german forum, who said something like that came from Vitaliy.

I also find it disturbing.

Also, in Germany there is already a test of the GH2. they got the model 2 eeks earlier. There they quote the japanese "chief developer" of th GH2, that with the GH13 many processor died because of overheating.

Well, I have never heard anything about this in any forum from anybody, who used a GH13.

So not everything one reads is to believe..... Of course

I used 2 hacked GH1 cameras in full sunlight for 2 days in summer, 95F both days, and neither camera ever had a problem. I don't believe it.

In you look at recent AVCHD encoder research you'll see that two different software parts drive encoder for 1080 and 720 modes.
So, it could be that one part is not ready.
Or may be even CABAC will be implemented in final version.
No one know it.
Some heavy work is going on GH2 and AF100 encoders.
Both keep footage private, and this is not common thing.

You can believe in anything until they allow it :-)
As big Intel guy said recently - "users must be prevented from running unsigned software on their computers on hardware level".
They are working on this (most asked why they bought antivirus company :-) ).
So, soon any unauthorized byte found of your camera will be prosecuted :-)

I was for 3 weeks in the Philippines, where we had up to 35° celsius.
The GH13 never had a sign of a problem.

I think it was just tactic to scare users away from the hack.

I see a killer device coming: GH2 + Atomos ninja HDMI recorder...it will be cheaper than ever.

how about hacking GH2 bitrate? there might be some problems?

Right now topicality of this is the same as hacking genom of invaders from Mars. :-) Both are unknown to humanity.

In fact I think it will be the contrary. They will get lots of people in pal countries who will call to tell them that they have used the much vaunted cinema setting and their camera is having all sort of flickering lights, etc . Most of the intended user of the gh2 are common people who will not understand the shutter, hz, etc... but they will see on the marketing brochure they will have cinema(tic) style and will use it aplenty.
