GH2 official discussion thread

The difference between this first look and those posted prior is in who the author is. Michael Reichmann is an accomplished professional photographer. He is also an experienced equipment reviewer. Personally, I found his to be the best review posted yet, even though it may not have been particularly rich in details "we did not know yet".

Oh, well, I'm not going to argue about it - suffice it to say that I'm not overawed by Mr Reichman, or his reviews.

From the focus video i saw , i dont like the way it focus... very CDAF , like my nex 5 does.
Instead , A55 does it quicker and more presice , without hunting .
The speed is ok, but the hunting is annoying.

Also, I found this footage demonstrating the touchscreen AF speed:

thanks for that.

Slightly disappointing that the focus 'heaves' slightly, every time it reverts back to the nearer (yellow) flower.

It goes from near to 'distant' immediately, but consistently heaves when it returns.

That was one of my pet hates about the GH1 (albeit that I found it to 'heave' when changing any focus point) - anyone speculate about the cause?

It appears that autofocus algorithm always tries to focus in the direction of infinity first, so several [noticeable] cycles pass with front flower growing further and further out of focus before direction is switched and proper focus is achieved. Also, the fact of the lens in use "breathing" doesn't help at all. I don't think it is the 14-140, because I hardly notice any breathing on mine.

Thanks very much for that - it explains it perfectly, in terms that even I can understand ;)

So, it looks as though we're stuck with it, then?

Here's a small challenge while you're waiting for a useful GH2 review - find *any* Luminous Landscape' review that *seriously* criticises *any* camera.......
Easy...Read the review of the NEX 5.
"So – I wish that I could say – "run about and buy a NEX-5 if any of these features appeals to you". But in all good conscience I can't. The NEX-5's user interface may well be one of the most frustrating that I have ever encountered. ... it would be too frustrating to use on an everyday basis. Kind of like the beautiful girl who really attracts you, but then when she opens her mouth speaks in a shrill and annoying voice while blowing bubble gum. Ummm, no thanks. "

OK, what do I win??

I do think it is interesting, simply from a probability point of view, that we can't seem to get any answers to the many burning questions that have been speculated about in this thread for the past month.

Of course, much of this has been due to the pre-release nature of the product -- but the limited scope previews, the aborted buggy Bloom camera episode and the latest batch of uninformative posts from Japan -- seem to pose more questions than they answer.

Well, if we knew all the answers right away then where is the fun in life? ;)

I haven't heard this advice mentioned in a while, so here it is: "Get away from the computer and go shoot something interesting!" GH2 is going to be a great cam, but it will not come with either creative vision or great story or a Steven Spielberg mode. Not even a Philip Bloom one. I should really take my own advice to heart, since I'm lucky enough to own a GH13 ...

Well put.

If I had a nickel for every hour I have spent researching equipment used to make money -- I wouldn't have to make money.

We've already done that one! - although the young lady is, apparently, not Mr Reichmann's cup of tea, he still goes on to recommend her to everyone else

No-one leaves empty handed - and tonight's star prize is one year without having to read Luminous Landscape reviews :cheesy:

(note, the decision of the judges is final, prizes cannot be exchanged for cash)

So what's your problem with this gentleman? Did the reviewer insult you at some point or are your reading skills impaired?

My initial impression of the NEX-5 was positive...

That was your reply to me earlier. But that is not the whole story. In fact the next sentence squarely contradicts you:

...and indeed it remains so if I adopt the perspective of a photographic neophyte. For the newcomer to photography, or someone stepping up from a point-and-shoot, the NEX-5 is a terrific camera, offering small size and weight, very good image quality, and ease of use.

But for the photographer who is already familiar with the basics of their craft, and who wants a tool that they can grow with, the NEX-5 seems to put up too many road blocks.

So how about you take your own prize and stay out of Mr Reichmann's blog until you can improve your cognitive skills.

First footage I've been able to find of the Extra Teleconversion feature from Japan:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXrH2LkzS0E

He writes about it here (in Japanese):
http://muujp.cocolog-nifty.com/tokyoshashi/2010/11/gh2ex-8ad0.html#more

Unfortunately, he only shot in 720P, 30fps. There's been some ambiguity about whether this feature works in full Cinema mode (1080P, 24fps, 24Mbps) The Panasonic sites & literature I've seen only mentions how it works with 720P & 1080i. So I asked the writer in my fractured Japanese, and I'm waiting for his response. This is a BIG feature, as far as I'm concerned, so I'm trying to get confirmation that it indeed will work at the highest quality mode.

Am I, by any chance, addressing the President of the official Michael Reichmann fan club?
