GH2 official discussion thread

Just held the GH-2 in my hands. Unfortunately, the people at Yamada Denki (electronics store) have once again proven to be completely useless and ignorant when it comes to service. No display and a couple in stock. After hassling the guy, he opened up the box, attached the lens and handed me it without a battery... well, thanks for nothing!! Had my card in my pocket to get testing as well... I will return once they've pulled their fingers out. :(

Great let us know when you get the footage? What is their return policy? Can you buy it and then return it? Is there a restocking fee?

Been reading some Japanese forum initial comments. The autofocus is vastly improved, not only in speed but in the fact that it doesn't focus hunt like the GH1 did, esp with shallow DOF lenses. The viewfinder is improved it seems, clearer.

That video is from Japan, I'm reading the forum where it came from and the associated pictures. Japan is NTSC too.

"Since the only Progressive mode that the AVCHD standard formally recognizes is 24P, 1920X1080 is shot progressively but recorded as interlaced."

what does that mean?

EVF "It is slightly larger than the one on the GH1", very nice that would make it even closer to the the size of that in the 1D Mark III now. maybe even the same size, the GH1 wasn't that far off before.

That review was of the pre-production model, will be interesting what differences, if any with the production firmware

I'm looking again tomorrow.
As for return policy, if it isn't broke then you'll have a hard time returning it (from the store where I'll be cashing in my points)...maybe

At the GH2's price point for body only, its competitors are more like (B&H prices):

1. Nikon D7000 - $1200
2. Canon 60D - $1100
3. Pentax K-7 - $900
4. Panasonic GH2 - $900
5. Nikon D90 - $900
6. Sony SLT-A55 - $750
7. Canon T2i - $705

That's stiff competition but I think this camera does carve out a niche (especially for people on this website :-) because of its small form factor (lens including) and true hybrid ability.

As a (sad) Pentax user, I can tell you the K-7 is not in the running - no proper manual exposure control, particularly no manual shutter. Pentax really haven't gotten the memo yet ...

"As for its most direct competitor, the Sony NEX 5, I would judge them comparable when it comes to overall image quality."

Whhaaaaaat? GH1 is vastly better than a NEX 5 image wise (mud and all)...Im sure a GH2 would be even better.

Perhaps the reviewer updated his site, but this part is missing from your quote:

...I would judge them comparable when it comes to overall stills image quality

He then goes on to add:

When it comes to video the GH2 has it all over the NEX 5

I would say from what I have seen and read that those are pretty accurate statements.

It was nice of LL to try - but, really, they shouldn't have bothered.

Grab half a dozen 'pre release' opinions from anywhere on the web, mix with a couple of Panasonic press releases - stir them round a bit, and, voilà!, you have the eagerly anticipated Luminous Landscape 'review'

"Never before in the field of photographic reviews have so many been so disappointed by so little"

Or summat like that:grin:

yea i agree... doesn't tell anything new

Title of the article is "First Look". The chap writing is quite well respected, and his opinion sure counts for more than yours, and indeed mine.

Should have gone to Specsavers.
