GH2 official discussion thread

First footage I've been able to find of the Extra Teleconversion feature from Japan:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXrH2LkzS0E

He writes about it here (in Japanese):
http://muujp.cocolog-nifty.com/tokyoshashi/2010/11/gh2ex-8ad0.html#more

Unfortunately, he only shot in 720P, 30fps. There's been some ambiguity about whether this feature works in full Cinema mode (1080P, 24fps, 24Mbps) The Panasonic sites & literature I've seen only mentions how it works with 720P & 1080i. So I asked the writer in my fractured Japanese, and I'm waiting for his response. This is a BIG feature, as far as I'm concerned, so I'm trying to get confirmation that it indeed will work at the highest quality mode.

It looks excellent to me - a loss of feather detail on the duck, but that's nit-picking, looks like a great feature.

Am I, by any chance, addressing the President of the official Michael Reichmann fan club?

:2vrolijk_08:

No. Don't know the man and never met him. I just dislike anyone misrepresenting things. There's enough FUD out here in cyberspace without people erroneously adding to it, willfully or otherwise.

Right, well, let's leave it there. This is supposed to be a thread about the GH2.

I gave my honest opinion of the LL 'review', period. 'FUD' seems to be a rather harsh view of it - unless you mean the fear that LL might bless the world with a 'First Second Look At The GH2'? :cheesy:

I'm sure Mr R is a very nice chap - and if I ever met him I might also be tempted to scatter rose petals at his feet, or perhaps not. None of which is at all relevant to the thread.

So that's my final word on this particular subject.

You have to remember that this is not the original footage as it came out of the camera. It has been compressed at least once when the files were joined and then again by youtube. It also has highly detailed water in it so the bit rate at 60 FPS is probably not sufficient.

That being said I am amazed at that quality. It looks like an extra 3.9x optical zoom to me. It better work with 1080p @ 24 FPS though. I want a high bit rate low FPS mode to use this with. 1080i and 720p will not be as useful for me with this mode.

Nice find, Robert! Images look a little soft with teleconvertion on, but this could be anything from slight camera shake (visible on the boat shot) or focus being off (not that hard at such focal length) or youtube compression or 100-300 being a little soft wide open (assuming).

Also, I think his math is a little off -- in 720 mode the teleconversion factor is 3.9x, so all telecon footage has 35mm FL equivalency of 300x2x3.9=2340 mm! At 5.6 aperture these are some mind-blowing results.

I'm very curious about what the resolution chart shot with this feature will reveal with one of Olympus's SHG telephoto lenses, like 35-100/f2.0. In 720p mode we are talking about a FF focal range equivalent of 273-720mm/f2 lens! I'm sure the sharpness of this SHG lens will be fairly adequate. Or 90-250/f2.8 -- this will be the wildlife shooter's dream combination.

It works in 1080p24. As I have such footage.

Is is 100-300mm. It is little soft at pixel level.
You'll need best, sharp lenses.
Set zoom at 100% at your current images and abserve that only best lenses hold itself at open apertures.

Can we use this tele mode with 20mm f1.7 lens ?
What will be the final f/stop and equivalent in 35mm ?
I am interested in a small portrait lens with large aperture...

Yes, MR reported
What I see is a lens with very good image quality. There's the usual amount of vignetting at wide apertures and image quality in the corners is a bit soft wide open. Stopped down one or two stops resolution becomes excellent, and vignetting effectively disappears.
So perhaps stopped down results will improve. All of a sudden, those Olympus FT telephotos look very attractive. However, 100-300 seems to have autofocus performance similar to 14-140 (AFC mode supported) and cheaper. Eagerly awaiting test results!

Yes, why not?
The math is simple:
1080 mode, 2.6x tele, so 20mmx2x2.6=104mm/f1.7 (aperture parameter does not change)
720 mode, 3.9x tele, so 20mmx2x3.9=156mm/f1.7

20mm is very sharp, even wide open. Stopped down to 2.8 in 1080 mode sound like a winner to me.

Here is a video of some longer focal length lenses that could be ideal for videos with the GH2 and the teleconversion feature. The Nikon 85mm F1.8 lens I have is exceptionally sharp wide open. Imagine this lens at an equivalent 663mm and F1.8 light!

I think the key to optimizing the extended teleconverter mode will be to minimizing camera shake and movement and to increase the bits per pixel. 1080p @ 24 FPS will be ideal but the 720p MJPEG mode might be very good as well. Imagine a hacked 4:2:2 MJPEG at 100+ mb/sec with the 3.9x teleconversion! That would produce some shots we probably have never seen before.

I have a 400mm F5.0 lens that is just begging for this feature.

I think the key is with the EXT Tele mode, the footaga is amazingly "cutable" with your regular shots. No regular viewer could tell the difference. Now lets see some low light/higher ISO examples and see where it breaks down. I doubt we will be able to use this feature at our highest usable ISOs for regular mode.

The reason I am such a fan of Panasonic now, is their great engineers. Vitaliy being an extension of that complement! :-)

nothing new...... but a filmmaker's first impression

Kenneth did you test the production or pre-production version? Any word on how clean HDMI mode is when recording? Is it possible to turn off all overlays? Also, is HDMI monitor switched to 1080/24p mode when shooting in Cinema more or does it stay at 60i? If your monitor supports FullHD specs (1080/50p or 60p) in non-cinema mode will it work in progressive or interlaced modes?
