GH2 finally dumping starts!!!!

Can't wait to see if higher bitrates at 1080p24 are possible. That's all I really want out of this camera. Everything else I can live with as is. :)

The higher bit rate will be great for 1080p @ 24 FPS and 720p @ 60 FPS especially. I am also really interested to see what frame rates are possible. I know that full speed 1080p @ 60 FPS is not likely. However, I really think that the 1080p @ 60 FPS slow motion from the AF100 could be possible. That would be good enough for me.

Battery prevention bypass would be awesome as well.

For me 1080p24 already have good birate. I'd like to see much higher bitrate for 720 50p.

I dont understand Panasonic, why we cant have 1080p25 24mbit, 720p 24mbit and 1080i 24mbit. The inadequacies of 17mb with such a super resolution camera like GH2 is maddening. Am thinking of going back to GH1 again, love the colour of the GH2 and detail of GH13 and its pal friendly formats. Bring it VK:angry:

I'm sure I'm not understanding something - forgive me, I'm just ignorant. But. I don't get it. I mean, what exactly are you guys hoping happens with hacking the GH2? If it was possible to do "X number of good things" on this hardware, why wouldn't Panasonic already do it? I read many folks saying that basically Pana is crippling the GH2 to protect the AF100, but to be honest, I don't believe that, because competition won't allow that - anyone who cripples their cameras, well another company is not going to cripple and take the market away - it's too competitive. It's like saying Toyota is going to cripple their cars - heck, people will just go for a Honda or Subaru or whatever. I bet you everyone is just going balls out as fast as they can. The only time you'd cripple a product to protect higher end stuff is if you have some kind of monopoly or semi-monopoly. Like Apple - I believe they'll cripple (a bit), because they're the only ones with OS X; and even Apple can't go too far, because if it gets out of whack too much, people will just go PC - they'll ask for a premium $, but can't ask too much.

So my suspicion is that Pana doesn't include a bunch of things on the GH2 that a hack enables, because that can make it unstable. It's sort of like overclocking chips - you can do it, but sometimes you'll fry the chip. So the hacking may make it do "more", but at a risk, and Pana doesn't want to support hardware that's working at the edge of performance because the risk of failure is too high, and they are conservative.

But of course, I don't know. I mean, there was the GH1 and the GH13 really was an improvement (from what I read), so that would tend to argue against what I'm saying. But maybe that was the first model, and Pana just was conservative. And maybe they went all out on the GH2. I don't know, I'm just speculating.

Heck, I hope the hack is successful. I mean, we all would like to get something for nothing - a great camera at a great price. That's the allure. But how realistic is it? If it's true - heck, I'll do cartwheels, but I guess I just don't understand it.

No doubt Vitali is super talented - Pana should hire him - so best of luck to him. I just wish I understood what's going on. Apologies if I offended anyone, I didn't mean to, I'm just asking questions because I'm not up on all the technology and company strategy and stuff.

Oldcorpse - I can see where you are coming from but I think ( and I have no proof of this) that they knew how good the GH2 could be. What they did with the HDMI out underpins, at least to me anyway, that they dumbed it down from its full potential. True uncompromised uncompressed 4.2.2 out of the HDMI port alone would make this cam encroach somewhat on the AF100. So that's why it is such a PITA to actually make use of the HDMI port without jumping through hoops.Yes they are about a hundred things why from a workflow perspective the AF100 is a pro tool and the GH2 is not. Barry has an exhaustive list on that. But when it comes to image alone the GH2 is being held back a little by the codec. Panasonic do know how to make a good codec by the way - the stuff coming out of the TM*** series is stellar. They do also know how to make uncompressed HDMI work.........on all the other cams except this one.:undecided

I for one am very excited to see what Vitaliy can achieve

Aww YEAH!!

I don’t think that Panasonic is crippling the cameras on purpose. Well maybe they are with the battery copy protection. However, the GH2 is capable of much more than stock and like the GH1 we will see what is possible after Vitaliy does his magic.

I think this boils down to a warranty issue. Quite simply the hacked GF1 and GH1 were unstable. There just were not any high gain settings that made it completely stable. That is why Panasonic does not sell it that way.

Most people have not encountered this but an unhacked GH2 is actually unstable as well. I can get my GH2 to produce the write speed error even with a 30 mb/sec Sandisk card in certain situations. Those situations are rare. However, they are real world situations like ice rinks and climbing gyms. I doubt that Panasonic will allow a much higher bit rate in the cameras unless there is some breakthrough in data writing either in the camera or in the SD card or perhaps in both.
