GH2 100Mbps Flow Motion v2 Patch - Banding & Blocking Be Gone!

While I can readily see mottled patterns in the greenish-brown wall

I think the mottled pattern is the artifact, as it flashes on and off from one frame to the next, and looks completely defective to me. Nothing else in the image is doing this weird "flashing".

I updated the video with a new test that goes through AVCHD (unhacked), Flow Motion 2.02, and Cluster 7 "Apocalypse Now". Only color correction was to blow up the shadow areas to make the artifact more pronounced.

I don't know about anyone else, but if I get no artifacts in original files or all but one NLE's file handling- I don't use the NLE that produces artifacts. Seems pretty simple.

I was running with FlowMotion and had the artifacts show up in specific shots with my GH2. I switched to Sanity and haven't seen them yet, but honestly I haven't shot the type of footage where they occurred under FlowMotion.

Thanks for your great work but I'm still trying to download the patch - is the attached .zip file enough? If not can someone direct me to the correct link with clear instructions as to how to load it to the GH2. I'm finding this all confusing. Cheers,

flow motion patch installed - no access to power save mode in the menu

Hi All

Toolman here

First off I Powell your a god.!!

Now to my issue. I just upgraded from gh1 to gh2 last week & I have the flow motion hack installed (latest one) works great.

I just notices that the camera does not go into sleep mode so i went into the set-up menu and went to the Economy setting

the Sleep mode option is greyed out I only have access to the auto lcd off settings.

I followed the "setting up your gh2 for video guide here"

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?204761-A-Guide-To-Setting-Your-GH1-GH2-Up-For-Video

Has anyone came across this issue and how did they fix it.

Thanks in advance,

Toolman

Hi All

Toolman here update

I figured out that with a generic battery it will not go into sleep mode or dim the lcd

On a side note is there anyway to re-upload the original panasonic firmware back onto the gh2 like you can with the gh1. Is it a simple matter of loading the original Panasonic firmware into ptools and just making the .bin file without applying any of the hacks?

Thanks in advance

Toolman

"Flow Motion v2 works reliably with the GH2's consumer-friendly auto-exposure features in both 24p and HBR video modes. However, in 720p SH video mode, auto-exposure operation may cause recordings to fail sporatically and the camera may need to be restarted. To avoid this pitfall, I recommend using Flow Motion's 60Mbps 1080i FH and 720p H video modes when using any combination of the following features:"

Does this still need to be done ~ reducing the 720p mode to 60mbps?

Only if you have reliability issues when using auto-exposure features in 720p mode. In practice, this is most likely to occur when using auto-focus Lumix lenses in iA mode, and that's when you'll probably want to use H rather than SH mode. I've not seen any problems occur when using manual-focus lenses in Manual exposure mode at 100Mbps.

Hey Lpowell,

First of all thank you so much for coming up with one of the most reliable and successful hacks and putting so much time and hard work into it. Let me know if there is a place to donate a few dollars your way for your hard work!

A couple of questions about Flowmotion 2.02 as I haven't had enough opportunity to fully test everything:

First my biggest question:

Audio Settings

What are the changes in the audio settings doing? Here is what I'm finding. I was always good with how my stock firmware camera handled my Senheiser wireless mics and Rode VideoMic when I had the audio gain on the camera set to the lowest setting.

With Flowmotion my audio is seemingly quieter(though again I haven't tested it extensively), when I have it at the highest gain setting. When I bring my audio levels up in post I hear the noise from, whatever. The cameras circuits, or whatever. But that noise floor comes up with everything else. So I disabled the audio settings for now but I'm curious as to what they do, and if I should just up the gain on the output of my wireless reciever, or if they are more intended to deal with hotter signals. Just kind of wondering how to use this properly.

Here are a couple other questions I have:

24L

Is 24L an upgrade over stock 24H? I would LOVE to be able to shoot only the extra bitrate of your 24H setting when needed in high detailed scenes, or for certain projects, but save space when I don't. What are the properties of 24L? Better detail, no codec breakdowns as compared with 24H stock? From my tests so far, it's hard to tell the difference between Flowmotion 24L and stock 24H, which is good.

720p60

I see that the GOP size is smaller and bitrate is higher. Is there significant improvement in 720p footage in your eyes (as this is one area stock really lacks).

Thanks Lpowell for everything! I really appreciate it.

Thanks for trying Flow Motion v2, here are some more details:

Audio Settings

FM2 uses Per Lichtman's Pasedena Pulse audio patch. This patch gives the GH2 a more linear volume scale (in db) than the stock settings. Because it's less compressed, the recorded volume may sound lower, but the dynamics will be well-preserved. More info here:

http://perlichtman.com/pasdenapulse...settings-file-pasadena-pulse-audio-v2-beta-2/

24L

FM2's 24L mode offers two advantages over the GH2's stock 24H video mode. FM2 @ 24L records at 60Mbps peak bitrate versus the stock 24H peak bitrate of 24Mbps. In addition, all Flow Motion 1080p modes use a 3-frame GOP to minimize macroblock artifacts in fast moving images.

720p60

Similar to its 1080p modes, Flow Motion's 720p video modes use a 6-frame GOP to minimize macroblock artifacts without producing excessively high bitrates. In order to maintain consistent frame-to-frame image quality, FM2 uses fine-grained quantization matrices on its P and B-frames as well as on its I-frames. The unhacked GH2 produces very good image quality with static, low-detail subject matter, but tends to run short of bitrate in more stressful situations. FM2's 100Mbps peak bitrate enables it to maintain consistently high image quality in all practical shooting conditions.

Lee, a little shout out to you from here as well. Did a shoot the other day with v2 installed. No issues, amazing footage, cutting happily with the C300 from the same shoot. Thank you.

Note sure I'm following... L or H?

H seems to have higher bitrates for me.

I'm looking at 24L as an option if I'm wanting to save space and don't need uber high bitrates. So I was comparing Flowmotion's 24L with Stock firmware 24H.

I'm pretty frugal, and 2X-4X bigger files means more hard drives, more organization and more work.

I just wish HBR had a high and low mode too because I need to shoot in 30p sometimes and the extra bitrate is unnecessary.

I have just hacked my gh2 wth flow motion v2, or i think i have. is there any way of checking its on the camera, its still showing panasonics version 1.1 in camera

You can use CBrandin's excellent Stream Parser app to analyze your footage to see how it's being recorded.

Official Stream Parser Web Page

Stream Parser FAQ

Flow Motion is a variable bit-rate patch, so it will use more data for complex fast motion images, and much less data for static slow-moving or static shots.

If the firmware number didn't change, you probably haven't applied the hack correctly.

You can make sure the firmware will have to change to 0.0 (read FAQ), but you can also additionally apply the hack with a custom firmware number.
You could make several hacks with their own firmware number to easily recognize them.
To apply any of them at anytime, you would have to apply the 0.0 hack first.
