GH13 far superior to GH2

I have found that my GH2 is better in most everything than my gh1 hacked with "C" settings, and that includes highly detailed scenes. Yes, it shocked me but I setup my cameras side by side and compared images. The GH1's image is softer and still had slightly more blocking/mud than the gh2.

The single thing I like about the gh1 more than the GH2 is the motion blur.
If you look closely you can see a bit of haloing where the GH2 is applying more sharpening. But I like the way it does it, you only notice it on a resolution chart.
Thjat's comparing it with the Blackout-lpowell patch, of course.
On my cam, strangely enough, ISO 800 is slightly less noisy than the GH2. Maybe I have a good sensor. But the thing is, I would not bet money that I could tell them apart in a double blind test.

Both have their benefits and weakness (GH1 will lose its benefit if the GH2 is hacked)...but GH2 here in u.k is £600 and I saw a hackable GH1 sell for £58 few days back....was a 99p starting bid but still...shocking. I think on average you can get a GH13 for £200 so how I look at it GH2 is £400 too much for the minor improvements (to me).
Happy as I am right now.

Saying that I do actually love shooting with my GF13 more over GH13....does that make me sick?

Can you please share the info, where you can buy the GH13 for 200 pounds? I could ask a friend in the UK to get it for me....I will have a 2 camera setup! Please do let me know.

Thanks!

Yes i have only the GH2 but what i find so strange is all the different opinions,do human eyes all vary so much,i realy think they do.

I got mine from Park camera's when they were clearing out old GH1 stock but ebay.uk has had a few and some have gone for less than that (body only)... bidding auctions mind.
I myself am planning on selling a red one for £300 (not inc p&p) with some FD lenses...either it'l go or not if not I aint selling it.

What FD lenses you plan to give along with the GH13? Are you in London? You could PM me.

We all need to move forward and that is the GH2. Of course it is improved. Why do people keep arguing this I can't understand, really.

Ahhh this old question which raises it's ugly head once a month at least.

We all need to move forward and that is the GH2. Of course it is improved. Why do people keep arguing this I can't understand, really.

Because 'improved' is a very relative blank term. Certain things are improved with the GH2 and certain things are not and certain things are in fact worse. (720p shooting mode for example)

Just because something is the 'new release' does not make it automatically better. Plenty of new mics get released that are not better than old standards. Ask any audio engineer. The same is the case here. We have to stop the theme of "I will argue for the camera I have now because that's what I bought so I must love it and believe it is the absolute best in ALL situations and convince others as such."

That is the Canon camp philosophy. People still go around thinking that 7D/5D mk II one is pro and the GH13 or GH2 is a 'toy' just because of others opinions and not based on true image testing. When I speak, I speak neutrally of actual image of all cameras quality under various conditions. I am not "in love with the GH13" because it's the camera I bought and I am going to brainwash myself that it's the best. I have done countless tests as well as viewed others tests and if the GH2 were indeed 'better' I would go and buy two or three of them right now (if I could find them), but mine and many other's testing has show this not to be the case in many instances - especially high detail in sufficient light with actual MOTION.

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?243813-Blackout-Powell-Native-24p-Patch-GH1-FTW!!!

There are plenty of neutral comparisons in that thread from people who own BOTH hacked GH13s and GH2s so they have no bias towards one or the other.

The question of "should I get a GH2 or 2 hacked GH13s" for the same price is a very valid one and should not be discarded by "move on" statements.

In my extreme testing - GH13 with proper hack settings is superior to the GH2 in keeping high detail during motion in decent lighting:

I challenge someone to show me this fine detail without some blocking artifacts on a GH2:

The GH2 has better low light... but I find it does a lot of weird blocking in shadow areas so whats the use.... I also find its image to be too aliased off the bat... and the idea that the GH13 can't do great low light with the proper lens and settings is silly:

If you have a GH13 I would take a look at the latest fairly stable 24p patch lpowel developed with a little help from me.... to me, my settings are superior to the GH2s output but thats a decision to make for your eyes only.

When / if the GH2 gets hacked I'll get one. It would be pointless now for me. About to pop for an AF-100 though but I see some issues with it as well.

The GH2 is a fine camera at a great price, and if you have it and love it, GREAT! But don't tell people it is superior in all situations. That's simply false.

Newer is not ALWAYS better. Let us not forget Windows Vista. Let us not forget all the OLD FD lenses that are cheap and producing amazing image quality.

Well i have never used a hacked GH1 so i cant compare with my GH2 but what i can say is i like my Pal GH2s 720P mode far more than 1080 50i,the extra 24P resolution is good if it worked better in pal land,so is pal 720P better than the other tv systems.

Well, I have both (GH13 with native 24p and a GH2), and what I can say is that the GH2 is clearly better. In terms of features, resolution and also detail in dark areas where my GH13 would just smear out details whereas my GH2 doesn't to that extend. I compared motion cadence as well by placing both cams on top of each other and they are equivalent. As someone said before, it's not night and day, but clearly an improvement.

Two major observations:

(1) What is still hard to explain but clearly evident, that the differences in daylight with the Panasonic lenses are almost not there, but with legacy glass like my Canon FD 50mm f1.4 the improvement is striking. Obviously these new lenses interact differently with the sensor than the old glass. With the GH2 I'm all of a sudden getting resolution detail with the Canon FD that I never had before. Don't ask me why.

(2) white balance at nightscenes: as the GH2 takes up color a bit different than the GH13, night scenes at manual Kelvin settings are much improved. With the GH2 I don't get that nasty "orange" during night which I always had to color correct with the GH13. Hence, skin tones especially at night are vastly improved.

I always wanted a second cam hence I'm very happy with the GH2. See my first video here:

http://www.vimeo.com/22157896

If you don't need a second cam, GH13 is fine, keep it.

I just want to stress this point. If you have a GH-13 and don't need a new cam...then that camera is good enough. If you have an "unhackable" GH-1....then I say the GH-2 is definitely worth the upgrade. But they both have their strengths and...um....issues. :)

Tried taking photos with my GH13 today - yuck to the functionality in M mode! Good God I hate this camera for stills. Why does it have to be such a horribly slow, cumbersome camera for stills, when it's so easy for video? I want my 5D back!

Many good points here, but only really relevant if you had/have a GH13 that doesn't have the bad banding problems. Ours did, and so the GH2 is a welcome improvement. That said, if I could find a clean GH13 that had minimal banding problems, I'd likely pick it up, as I do miss the very high bitrate 720 and the rad jpeg modes.

think it is also important tosiphon out what is the marketting promo of GH2 and there are a lot of agents doing that. For me GH2 simply cannot reach the high bitrate of GH13.There is no way anyone can convince me that GH2 which I also have can ever be compared to Ipowell high peak or the blackout 24p

Well the hot topic here seems to be that FPN has been replaced with a far-worse color banding, I'm seriously seeing it on every GH2 vid now (also doing comparisons with GH13, yeah ofc it's there but faaaaar less than GH2). Simply, GH2 needs Vitality and then it will be fantastic, right now it is flawed. If the bitrate won't peak in bokeh/gradients well... that's a BIG problem. Also, there's some digital sharpening going on wich I have a problem with.

Been drooling over Gunther Machu's GH13 material, it shows what a fantastic camera it *can* be with the right knowledge & gut. Also browsing through my GH13 catalouge from last year and the high bitrates does indeed affect dynamic range, make a cineform 10-bit pulldown and you're game man...

If Panny gives us a firmware update then bye bye GH1, cus GH2 can do everything + much more under that black casing. If Panny does *not* provide us with a hackable firmware, I honestly think GH13 prices will peak once again.

Unlike the video modes, the GH1's stills mode does NOT show you an accurate preview of your exposure before you take a photo. After you become familiar with the intuitive way Live View gives you a preview of your video exposure, stills mode can seem outright dysfunctional. However, there's a clever workaround you can use to preview the exposure of your still shots:

1. If you haven't already, save your current video mode settings in one of the three Custom slots.
2. Switch to the Movie Mode, set it to Manual exposure, and adjust your exposure for taking a still shot.
3. Before snapping the shutter, switch to the M stills mode. The LCD display's brightness will change, but it will retain the Movie Mode's exposure settings.
4. After taking the shot in M stills mode, switch back to Movie Mode to set the exposure for the next shot.

If you prefer A, S, or P stills modes, you can set Movie mode accordingly. It takes a little practice, but once you get in the habit of previewing your stills in Movie Mode, you'll be able to switch back and forth by touch.
