GH1 or GH2

Kids? Then get GH2. It has faster AF. I heard good thing about GH2's EVF. If u can get GH2 body only EPP, order it. Order the GH1 deal also. Use GH1 until you get GH2 body. Sell GH1 body later.

When there is enough lighting, 14-42 will give good result. 20mm pancake is a must have for a family guy. Great in low lighting. I used FL-36R to bounce light on ceiling to get darn good indoor pictures. GH2's ETC can make the lens more useful. A cheap 50mm 1.4 old lens is good for artsy stuff. Again GH2 made it easy to control manual focusing. Fade adjustable ND filter can be useful to lower shutter speed. I'd say 67mm or 72mm filter would do it for current and future M43 lenses.

I'm keeping my eye on Rode Videomic Pro for better audio recording. There r gozillion gadgets... but I decided to go simple run-and-gun style.

Have fun~!!!

Thanks Stonebat. That's sorta of what I was thinking. Jump on board now with the GH1 deal, then continue saving and perhaps sell the GH1 body when I'm close to having enough saved for the GH2 (and the darn things are in stock!) The 20mm pancake is also on my list, and then I'd love to get some old but fast manual glass for shooting my films.

Keep in mind the gh1 will not be hackable. Still a good camera, but I was never fully happy with the gh1 hack or not. But it is a great deal regardless to get started with a large sensor camera.

I'd rather get the gh2 from own experiences with the 2 cameras so far. I don't miss my gh13 at all, but that's just my POV.

I'd do that if I were you. The GH1 is a great camera for ALL AROUND photo/video. I took mine on vacation and had a blast snapping shots and then taking video clips a split second later. It'll make a great B-cam for later and like you said any lens you buy will just go right on the GH2 when you get it. The motion JPEG mode is great for casual stuff and the quality is really pretty great...I know others may disagree but I loved that mode. Just drop on a timeline and edit! No fuss at all.

GH1 for now is not a bad idea considering GH2 price on slippery slope throughout this year. It's good news for budget conscious and patient buyers. Just a few months ago the invincible 7-14mm was $1100. It just broke down $800 barrier. M43 user base must be getting close to or reached the critical mass. All good news.

Kids and a TM700 beats an unhacked GH1 and the newer crappy lens 14-42
Hey, don't look at me, I ordered both the GH1 and the GH2. But I like the convenience and the sweet lens of the TM 700.

Sorry if it has been answered already, but I couldn't find it. And manuals are unclear in that matter.

My questions regarding VIDEO mode are:

  • can you control (limit) iso level on GH1/2 when recording movie?
  • does GH1/2 have any aids like zebra and focus assist in movie mode?
  • do GH1 and GH2 behave the same in the above cases?

With the continues new patches Ipowell,Vitaly are coming up with...think GH13 will be around forever.Ultimately the GH2 will simply be trying to overwrite the successes of the GH1 hack.

Use adjustable ND filter or ND like filters such as 360 rotation filters in Cinebox. Declicking lens is another option.

Connect Cineroid EVF to GH2. GH2's HDMI live out makes a big difference. Also GH2's AGC can be toned down. I guess this can make a big difference for non-dual audio recording.

Use adjustable ND filter or ND like filters such ...

All right guys, I appreciate any advice for newbie, but this not what I've been asking for. I am just a newly born fan of GH1 and 2 bodies (preferably GH2) that wants to figure out what to expect before I buy. So far I figured out:
- GH2 has manual iso level control in video mode;
- GH2 has no zebras or peaking in video mode, but has overexposure warning (highlights blink black/white). Also histogram could be turned on. Am I right? How about the same in case of GH1?

Gh1 and the hack has become a habit, the 24p seems to be holding most of the time...am getting an average of 35 to 40 mbps.dont think you can get that with gh2.

You have live histogram with the gh1 - I'm using that for most of my exposures. Works for me - less happy with the res of the lcd display, but it's producing great pictures.
