GH1 .mts files - how do you join them?

This is true. I can trim it frame-accurate in almost any video editor. However, in order to analyse data packets, data rates, etc. in GH13 StreamParser and/or show the original quality, the file should not be re-encoded. The trouble is that the original clips are too long, usually.

Vegas will render.

Vegas will render.

crunchy, you can probably select frame to frame in your NLE's trimmer?...not sure if "trimmer" is the universal word, but in Sony Vegas it is. having a strange night man, so i'm sorry if i'm not making sense.

Sony vegas will render and not natively edit/join the file. There is a drop of quality when it goes through vegas. I've pretty much tried all the available reasonable settings - unless you've got a setting (i'll like to know) which have been able to join the files without ANY drop/change in quality.

I even thought elecard would do it but nope - there are audio sync problems with it and the GH1 files.

With the canon HFS10 i was lucky in that the canon software pixela will edit/trim and join the numerous .mts files into one. You can only join up to a max of 99 files in one join operation. But the GH1's photofunstudio is very very limiting - it will edit/trim one .mts file only. It doesn't have a join function as far as i can tell. It doesn't look too good from here now....i'm curious how the pros use the GH1 without any drop in quality. Maybe there is a drop in quality but they accept it. I just want my original .mts file quality to remain.

A pro will most probably never use any original clip as it is. As soon as you start to do some sort of color grading (and every serious editor does it) you have to re-encode anyway. If you go with an intraframe based intermediate codec like ProRes on the Mac you will not notice any drop in quality. Nobody seriously working with the GH1/GH13 footage will just trim and join clips and be happy with that.

By the way, Edius (Neo) accepts native GH13 file. However, when exporting the file I cannot see any option to keep the original format/bitrates (except parts which need rendering).

well, you got me there. i have yet to shoot a clip more than 10-15 seconds.

I agree, except if taking school play or something similar. However, when testing AVCHD bitrates/stability I need longer shots of charts, grass, trees,... I think it's too long to publish entire clip instead of just few seconds.

Appleman, does photofun's studio trim mts file and does not re-encode it? It would be ideal solution.

I tried Pixela on my Canon HF10s, and that is one buggy program! When I analyzed the video frame by frame there often was a dropout at the join point for the two files. So I dumped Pixela and started using the DOS command, which so far has worked perfectly. I'm assuming for files that cam doesn't split automatically, there could be an interruption in the pulldown pattern if not handled carefully (24p).

Pixela worked all right for me - i believe. So far i've got about 4 large joined files from about 400-600 individual mts files. I didn't notice any dropout. Thank God it worked because nothing else could successfully join these files without rendering.

I was hoping at least photofunstudio would also do the same but alas it would only trim!!!!!

Would my solution be to shoot to the mpeg format then? Are there any Mpeg editors that will natively trim/join without any rendering ie. do it natively (from my understanding).

I installed PhotoFunStudio 3.1 HD from a CD received with a camera. However, it does not recognize the file. I checked the file and pressed icon "Edit AVCHD". The following message appears: "Select a file compatible with AVCHD editing and try again. Only AVCHD movies stored on the hard disk can be edited with AVCHD". It seems that I'll uninstall the SW, since it does it with any AVCHD file from GH13 I tried yet. Is it compatible with original AVCHD files only (17Mbps)?!?

PhotoFunStudio only works if you use it to import your clips from the GH1. It will create four files for each clip, and it needs all four files to edit the clip.

To do a butchers job of splitting MTS file with video intact, I used mkvmerge. I had the same problem Crunchy had because of the file size when posting charts. You need to specify time stamps in 00:00:00.000 format, but I noticed that resultant split files were slightly off target from the specified time stamps. Still, for posting charts etc. it was acceptable.

EUREKA - i think. i've tried everything, even the famous tsmuxer but when the join is successful there were the dreaded audio sycn problem. Then i read about eac3to. didn't really understand all the talk about containers/mkv etc. but there is a gui. Tried it and it looked like it worked. I joined 27 files and there is no audio sync problem. You'll have to use the dos copy command button. I didn't enable anything else as it was just a straight forward join. Thank god for the kind people of the web for these things. Google yr_eac3to_more_gui. Hope it help you guys. I've looked and looked and think i've found it now. I'll test some more over the weekend when i've shot more files with the GH1.

2nd attempt with 5 files has some problems - the images slowed down and then it played the next clip, no audio sync problems though. the end clip slowed down to a frame by frame advance with no sound at all. Looks like its back to the drawing board.

There's a lot of settings in Eac3to that i don't understand. Does anyone know how i should be using it?

Crunchy, do not remember how I did it, but may be you need to demux MTS file and use only the .h264 video stream or use that video stream to make a mkv container. I don't have access to PCs as I am travelling hence I cannot check how I did it. Tsmuxer or eac3to may do the demuxing or further muxing. You can happily change the container formats as the video stream is kept intact.

I've tried Pavtube HD converter. Doesnt work - just like TSMUXER the audio sync was a joke. I'm getting some good results with Eac3to so far. I have to still shoot some more files and see if its robust.

forgot to check back on this thread. Eac3to?...i'll give it a try as well in the next few days and report back, Appleman.
