GH1, GH2 EVF Eyecup

Why do I have to wait for GH2? then battery? then the rubber eyecup? Why!!!! Doesn't Amazon sell the eyecup?

Sir... the eyecup is not made-in-china...

Arrrrrrrrr!!!!

Hi Folks
The response to EVF cup has been low and probably not enough to warrant me to go into full production. I am not a manufacturer - just a GH1 user with an idea I thought would be useful to others. After reviewing the quote from a local CNC and mould shop, the initial start up cost would warrant the retail price to be set very high IMOP. I would have to produce quantities of 250 or more and lay out some serious up front cash for the aluminium and rubber casts plus materials. I would estimate the retail price of the EVF cup to be at about $65.00 based on costs of such a low quantity. Which judging by the consensus in this thread might be too high for people to pay. As it stands it may not be feasible for me to proceed and I'm not sure where to take this from here as I said I'm not a manufacturer or retailer nor do I want to be if it might mean me being stuck with enough eye cups to last a lifetime. With that the highest cost and time is producing the rubber pieces. Perhaps for those of you who are really interested I could look at providing the frame for $25.00 plus shipping and handling. And you could add a rubber eye cup purchased from Hoodman or some other one that would fit into the frame as I have used in one of my prototype units. That would make your total price around $35.00 -$45.00. Or perhaps this might be something to offer up to Hoodman or someone else to produce. I have complete set of 3D drawing and design specs that someone might be useful to someone. Right now I’m not to sure which way to go and my day job just keeps getting busier. Any advice besides a Hitler video which I love to watch would be welcomed.

Thanks
Rigs

Thanks for taking the initiative on this, rigs. I'll commit to buying the frame at $25+S&H. Only 249 more commitments to go ;-)

I've dealt with this stuff in the past and it comes down to the economy of scale. You can't just go with a local CNC place or plastics manufacturer and you have to deal in 1000's or 10,000's or more to make it cost effective. It's also so much cheaper to do this in china... But you are right, it's quite a load to consider. I do have a CNC guy here in Orlando and a rubber guy too but it would be the same situation. Unless it's huge scale it's not a good deal, unless you have the ability to do things as one offs with your own supplies and by yourself...

It's a valient effort and maybe something will pop up... I too have come to rely so much more on the EVF> it's actually quite good for focusing much more so than the LCD... The LCD is bad, but it's not as bad as the LCD on the HVX which was really crappy and a lot more expensive.... One thing that is nice is getting a much more reasonably priced LCD.. That's a good deal for sure...

I wonder if Hoodman or someone else might take up the call.... I also think you could possibly farm this out to a larger manufacturer or give the idea away....

I'd recommend starting a Kickstarter for this project so you can get for sure commitments...if you don't hit the target threshold then no product.

maybe open a poll thread to get precise numbers for your final decision ?

right now i would pay whatever price you'll say for a fine product.
but if you decide not to go with the 250 factory produced caps,
i would really like to get ahead with the 25$ option ASAP,
but i will be happy for some more detailed explaination about Hoodman cap (best option i need to buy) and what exactly i need to do.
personally if that's your final decision i'll be happy to send you the 25$ (or whatever sum for Israel shipping)

thanks

Thanks Ben I looked into Kickstarter a while back and it looks like a great idea to start something like this up, but its only available to US residence at this time.

Folks I may have an option to modify an existing manufacturers rubber eye cup to work within my frame. One of my main concerns if that the inside window is large enough to expose the optical sensor that switches from the LCD to the EVF when you put your eye close up to it . This feature can be set to auto or off on the camera or you can use the monitor button to switch between the LCD or EVF. I prefer to do this manually as the sensor can be to sensitive even at its lowest setting. I'm waiting for the dealer to send me specs before I make a commitment.

you mean it disables the sensor? what do i care? it's indeed too sensitive so i manually switch it.

I am also interested.
With manual lens on the way, will need the high-res evf even more.
Yesterday I had to shoot under the sun and had jammed the evf in my eyesocket trying to eliminate the light going trough :P
