GH1 availability around the world thread

just ordered mine from panasonic direct yesterday~ can't wait!

hopefully it'll get here before november, haha. i need it for a wedding

Ordered from Panasonic.com, may 26th. Order was handled by Panasonic Direct. Paid extra for UPS Next Day shipping.

I don't get it. I placed my order on the 23rd, paid for Next Day and still haven't gotten word of when I'm suppose to get the darn package. I really don't understand. I checked my status this morning on the panny site and it still says preorder status and ships in june 2009.

What gives????

Congrats nonetheless Solomon.

I found that the status on Panasonic's website is not accurate or precise at all. It basically said "Shipping June 2009" and then a day before I got them it said that it had shipped but there was no tracking.

nice .. thats a two week turn around which is better than what I was expecting.

Based on that I'm hoping that for orders made in early June within the states, the delivery will vary from 2 weeks to 3 weeks depending where you are. A Sales rep on the phone said that by July they will hit the stores like J&R and B&H (probably after the long weekend for the 4th). My order was made June 5 from Panasonic Direct, I'll post here when it arrives.

i just talked to the most helpful panasonic person ever. she said that (obviously) they are having a HUGE back order on cameras. and the shipment they got in yesterday was HALF of what they were expecting. yikes. and grrrrrr.

i told her I had a friend that had placed an order on the 23rd and one on the 26th, and the guy on the 26th got his but not the guy on the 23rd. i asked how this could be. she said this is how their system works:

the department checks all information to make sure theres no fraud. if there is ANY inconsistency with the account then they put it on HOLD. (inconsistency can mean ANYTHING, like say you just moved and the white pages list you at an old address, they put up a red flag) guess what. they won't look back into the red flag until the product is in stock. but they're gonna skip over you and send your camera to the next person on the list. meaning they might not go back into your account for a MONTH OR TWO because of the tiniest red flag. WTF????????

she said I had no red flag on my account, but Orchidthief, you might have a flag on yours if you haven't received it yet.

god, this sucks. i have stuff to shoot and i need to shoot it NOW. and NO, i don't have another camera to shoot it with. i shoot a bunch of stuff but i'm always having to rent or borrow, this is the first camera i'm actually BUYING for myself (just to pre-empt the statements of "well you shouldn't count on it, just shoot it with your Red One." :P)

sigh.

I'm Paul Gandersman. Ordered on May 27th. No Red Flags. No Idea When I'm Getting My Camera.

For the Canadians who have ordered. I heard from Doug Borbath at Panasonic Canada today he writes:
Hi Brian,

I cannot comment on how or why people in other countries are starting to receive the GH1, yet we in Canada have not. We do expect this model to arrive late this week, but even then it has to pass our own internal inspection process before being cleared through our systems and released for sale. And, to make things even more challenging, we are only receiving a fraction of the inventory that we require, since this model is currently experiencing greater demand than our factories can supply. I wish the news was better, but unfortunately, it does not appear to be possible to meet your request since it does not appear that this product will be shipping until after the time that you would be require it.
I do apologize that we are unable to meet your request, but unfortunately this situation was unavoidable.
"

Points to Doug Borbath who is the product manager for the GH1 in Canada, he got back to me within an hour of the original email. I also heard from my retailer Vistek who echoed Doug's response. We will delay the stuff we wanted to shoot with the GH1 until the next trip in the fall. Perhaps by that time there will be a couple of firmware updates and other good news.

Thanks Paul...I'll look into this. I'm going to give them a call right now to double check on this red flag BS. Will report back here and let you know what happens.

Haha...So I gave them a call and I got a very helpful rep for the "first" time.

Turns out that there was a shipment that was suppose to go out last week, however, they weren't all shipped out because they only received a partial amount of the inventory. Apparently their allotment for the Gh1 and two other camera models weren't fulfilled.

So I then informed her that a buddy of mine placed an order later than I did and received his shipment. That caught her offguard and she was just as dumbfounded as I was. Unfortunately she couldn't help me out, but that she would forward my case to the Panny research team and they'd be able to sort it out. I asked her if it had anything to do with my credit card on file or if my shipment address had anything to do with it(i had it delivered to my work), and she said there's nothing wrong and that if there was, it would be listed in the database(red flagged, I guess).

So be all end all, shipments have been delayed(how long? she couldn't say). She called me back with a reference number for the research dept. If they don't get back to me on what's going on, she said to call back by Friday or Monday at the latest with that ref number to figure out what's going on. :(

Orchidthief did you see in the other thread (that i started) that Jona ordered his on June 1st and got it TODAY? WTF???? What is going on at Panasonic!!! I'm not like a bunch of rich camera guys, i don't have 3 other cameras I can shoot my projects on and I don't have any money to rent anything because i'm spending it on a GH1 that never seems to arrive!!! This situation sucks man. yours even worse than me! this is ridiculous.

its okay, i'm not mad at you AT ALL. i'm just beyond frustrated with Panasonic. I can understand delays in shipping as long as they're shipping in order. but when they screw that up.............. :(

Yeah this is a total bummer. Hopefully the panny research team will get back to me soon. I have my reference number already.

I am confused, I ordered from Panasonic.com and the order is being handled by shopatron, what's the difference between that and Panasonic direct?

I don't believe my order went through Shopatron. I've never heard that company's name in my dealings with Panasonic. But I also go through their corporate partner store.

They are a middleman company that enables individual end users to buy stuff from Panasonic (and other companies) without Panasonic (or other companies) having to deal with sending out products, one by one, to individuals.

You place an order with shopatron and they put you in a database. Then, retailers (or distributors or whoever) in your region will send you the product whenever they get it. So, for example, if Best Buy has a relationship with Shopatron, you might get your GH1 sent from a local Best Buy warehouse. Best buy gets a ton of cameras from Panasonic, they go to their Shopatron portal, and basically have the sales already lined up there for them.

They don't have warehouses, they don't have orders in with Panasonic. They're not waiting for any product at all. They're not buying or selling anything. They're basically just an e-commerce database, business-to-business networking company.

"His business takes customers’ orders and places them on
“Confident Order Exchange” (Coex), an internet-based online
exchange where orders are taken up by a local retailer for
delivery or the goods are held in a store to be picked up."

This is what I was afraid of. I got screwed into a deal with a middleman and am at the mercy of local retailers supply chains? AKA the bottom of the barrel, aka July, even though I ordered through Panasonic? What the hell? Should I call Panasonic directly and complain until I get on the direct list with the same slot I should have had?

At panasonic.ca (panasonic canada) the GH1 doesn't exist yet... can you believe that! At Vistek.ca they sell it for $1899 and mostlydigital.ca $1646.99... (canadian dollar) I pre-ordered one at Vistek the 14/05... :(
