GH1 availability around the world thread

At panasonic.ca (panasonic canada) the GH1 doesn't exist yet... can you believe that! At Vistek.ca they sell it for $1899 and mostlydigital.ca $1646.99... (canadian dollar) I pre-ordered one at Vistek the 14/05... :(

Thanks Brian, I miss this one.

I may end up buying from B&H, fast delivery (2 or 3 days) no custom charge and cheaper then here in Canada. (bought my D90 from them) but the question is if I place a pre-order now... my chances for the first shipping batch are probably close to none.... its getting frustrating and I already sold my D90 :(

Just received email from Vistek that I've been tagged to get mine from their first order which should be in their hands June 26. I pre-ordered on May 13th, just one day before you. Good chance you might be OK if you stick with them.

Brian, sorry but it doesn't look you'll have a chance for your trip on June 14th.

Thanks Nighhawk for the info, I will probably stick with them.

So if I place a direct order at Panasonic today for a GH1, how do I prevent it being handed off or send to a third party processor like shopatron?

Direct from panny seems to still be the fastest way to get one. I have a pre order at B+H, but they have no idea when it might be in stock to ship.

there is no way to prevent it from getting filed with shopatron.
either you end up with an order from Panny Direct...or you dont :/

just got off the phone with mostlydigital.ca and they said they see it in their system as shipping the week of june 21st, and much to my disbelief he said there wasn't many orders, or at least backorders, for this camera. he said he would call me back when it is shipping, it's between him and the guy at vistek, they're having an imaginary race that only exists in my head. i hope mostly digital wins, they have it quoted at a better price

Just got off the phone with Panasonic. Guy there says that orders that were handled through shopatron were ones where the retailers in your area were believed to have GH1s in stock before Panasonic did, because they're not filling preorders and then retailers, there doing some other crap, whereby these retailers will probably get it first. He said that you're only routed through shopatron if it's the fastest way for you to get your camera, because Panasonic Direct and Shopatron are on backorder now, but Shopatron is supposed to be faster if they put you there, which is why they did it....not sure how much of that I believe, but it makes me think my best option is to keep my shopatron order....I don't know what other option I have.

The irony of shopatron is that I'm sure in some cases, it IS the fastest way. I mean, I can understand why people might choose shopatron, because it's basically like putting in a pre-order at EVERY local retailer. Or, every local retailer that's associated with the shopatron system.

In theory, it seems like it could work and might be good for the customer. In theory...

The 'rub' is that they're local retailers. Screw that. If I wanted to buy local, I'd buy local. I didn't WANT to buy local and I went directly to PanasonicDirect because THEY are the people making these cameras.

The ONLY reason I placed an order with Panasonic Direct is because this is a Panasonic product and I wanted it as soon as humanly possible. I didn't WANT to freaking wait until my local retailers got it. I don't WANT to be first in line at a local retailer. I'd much rather be 50th in line at the actual SOURCE of the cameras.

I'd say I hate shopatron, but I don't think it's their fault. They are what they are, which is a middleman. On the other hand, I totally blame Panasonic. They are the ones who diverted orders to shopatron. THEY are the ones who are making these cameras but yet, somehow, have NO idea what's going on with the cameras. THEY are the ones who think that no cameras have been sent out when we know that they have. And, from what I've read of Orchid's situation, he actually HAS an early order through PanasonicDirect and STILL hasn't gotten his camera even though other people have. WTF? What is wrong with them?

I've cancelled my 2nd order with Panasonic.com/shopatron. I still have my order in at J&R because I'm pretty sure I'm high up on their list although, frankly, I'm not even convinced I want this camera anymore (for other reasons, not completely because of the way Panasonic has handled this roll-out) I may just sell it whenever I get it/if I ever get it.

I just heard from Panasonic that they will be available next week in Canada.

next time we call Panasonic, their new response is gonna become "what camera? we haven't heard of any camera. a GHwhat? that doesn't exist." and then they hang up on you.

and then they call you back and say:

"i hate you and hope you die, thanks for choosing panasonic"

the end.

Well...all that said about Shopatron, the local retailers have to get it eventually, and they might before Panasonic sends out more cameras. The guy on the phone basically said that whatever supply chaining is going on their is independent from preorders being filled by Panasonic Direct....

I used to intern at a big technology company, and when we launched a new product, it actually went to best buy, new egg, and other places like that, MONTHS before it showed up on our own website for sale, and months before anyone at the company even had personal access to the product! I am sticking with my Shopatron order for now, I can live with 2-4 weeks, if that is really what it is.

The guy on the phone said that both were backordered, and that you were only assigned shopatron if it was faster for you...so here's hoping.

Wow. I wonder why the GH1 is so expensive in Canada compared to the US? With the current exchange rate, shouldn't the Canadian price be around $1,650 or so instead of $1,900?

Supply chaining. Do you know how hard it is to drive trucks through hundreds of miles of wilderness between "population centers" when moose keep jumping through your trucks windshield? $400 is a small markup given that moose alone caused $4.5 million dollars worth of product and vehicle damage in winter of 2008 alone!

peter, you're right i've been complaining about that canadian price for a few weeks now, but i did find one canadian seller that has it for 1650, i just called them and they didn't even want to give me a release date for it, and they said that if any other stores gave me release dates (vistek and mostlydigital.ca both gave me dates, both upsetting and at the end of the month) then they were just pulling numbers out of their asses to try to keep me from going elseware, because he knows there isn't a release date yet.//td

LMAO, "population centers" in quotes. We have 3 ya know.
FYI when driving in Canada; moose = death, Mule deer = heavy damage, White tail = light damage, black bear = sudden off road driving, Grizzly = only gear is 'R', beaver = speed bump.
