Getting either the GH1 or the GH2

Any tips on gear I could get for either camera besides a steady cam rig, since that's already been arranged. I'm just looking for opinions of the users of this really awesome film forum I joined.

We need a lot more input on what you are going to do with it because you can spend anywhere from under $100 to more than thou$ands for add ons and still not have everything.

Well I plan to shoot short films, commercial work, and a movie I have planned for the summer. I also need a decent variety like a prime lens, telephoto, wide angle, fish eye, and anamorphic. The price point that our group is looking for lenses is probably around $100-500 for the stated lenses. Also what equipment do you recommended in terms of bags I should use to carry the camera with lenses?

jezus only 500 for lenses, my 20mm f1.7 cost over half of that. I would stick with old 35mm primes then and get some adapters. Canon FD 50mm f1.8, Canon FD 28mm f2.8, & Canon FD 100mm f2.8 should get you going. Your only problem would be finding a cheap wide lens.

Your anamorphic adapter will be pricey even if you get the LA200 or CineMorph. 300-700.00.

If you want portable lighting then prices go up. even more for LED so you don't have to worry about heat and cooling time when packing up.

Sound would have to be recorded externally and synced. so much variety to choose from that its really your decision.

I'm slowly building my whole setup an I'm prolly a 1/4 way there. Depending on how quality the parts you want will be, your budget could easily exceed 10K

If your price range is $100-$500 for lenses then these videos might help you narrow down your choices. However, that is going to be tough to shoot for pay with that kind of budget. You better learn a lot about how the GH2 handles with those legacy lenses. It can be done but it will not be easy.

Get an Olympus 14-54 and the Panny 43/M43 adapter, that's $500-ish.

And you get coverage from wides to closes at f2.8~f3.5.

Sounds like a deal... No?

It doesn't really sound like a deal since I could buy the GH2 for only $419 used with the stock lens included. The person who is willingly handling the financial part of our group, is a great person and I don't wanna drive the price too much even if he doesn't really mind. I went around and did the math, and found out it would cost me around $569 in total to buy the GH2, 16GB SDHC Class10, and a steady cam shoulder rig. I don't have a problem settling with that for now and see where it goes from there.

I watched those videos and it was a pretty big eye opener on choices. But do you know or use any wide angle lenses that would be well suited for the GH2 or GH1?

The 14mm F2.5 is the only cost affective wider angle full sensor low light lens right now. Did I just qualify that too much? Anyway, that is a good wide angle and I use a .45x wide angle adapter to get down to 6.5mm with it. The adapter is cr@p but it was only $25 so it was worth it.

If you want real wide angle quality then the 7-14mm should be your only choice. It costs more than $700 though. Wide angle and "micro"4/3s just don't mix. You can try the c-mount solutions for wide angle but I can save you the trouble. They really don't work well at all unless you spend as much as the 7-14mm costs.

Basically, if you want wide angle then you want a bigger sensor.

The Olympus 9-18mm f4-5.6 Micro Four Thirds is also a good wide-angle lens, and about half the price of the Panasonic 7-14mm.

And kudos to mpgxsvcd for covering the Konica 40mm f1.8 and 57mm f1.4. I find the Hexanon's sharper than comparable Canon FD's, and these particular models are two of my favorite low-light lenses. As mpg points out, however, the fit of RJ's Konica->M4/3 adapters can be problematic. I have two of these and one snaps on the Hexanons just right, while the other one is quite sloppy.

I want to like that lens. However, its price and the fact that it is just so dog slow are making hard to like it. Not many of them go for below $500! I would take a fast wide angle zoom lens even if was gigantic and heavy. I just want it to be faster than F4-5.6. That is of no use to me since all of my wide angle shots are indoors at close range.

The Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 is the only fast super-wide-angle option I know of. But it lacks decent aperture control on M4/3 cameras and 11mm isn't that much wider than 14 to make it worth the hassle to me.

What mount does that come in? 4/3s? I think the 14mm + .45x adapter is probably better for video since the 14mm AF's so well.

I'm not sure I follow you...

A few posts back you state you want wide, fish-eye, anamorphic all that for $500 and then I present you the solution of a nice zoom and you say it's too much.

I'm scratching my head. Unless I got you wrong in the first place.

Here we go again...

M43 sensor has a good compromise in DOF, sharpness, aliasing, and DR for taking video. But it needs good lenses. A set of FD lenses and some old lenses are exception though. But getting shallow DOF in normal and wide angles is not cheap.

Would have to consider all of it. At the moment, it is not decided which of the GH's were getting. I already mentioned if we buy the GH1, then the hack you made is going on the thing right outta the box before we even film anything.

Nevermind, I'm sorry I got you confused. I thought you were stating a camera, not a lens XD
