The official SRP for the EU is 5695 Euro ... SSD pricing will be announced at NAB
That is without local sales taxes ... i.e for Belgium add 21% ...

A question for the Convergent Design individuals. Will the touch screen monitor have the ability to enable a "peaking" mode to aid in focusing on camera?

Hi Andrew-
This is a planned in a (free) firmware upgrade, but not in the initial release. Likely for 4th qtr release.

Thanks Mike. I don't think I have to tell you the "value add" this will have for the unit. Knowing this feature will be added will help not only people in making the decision to purchase the Gemini but about how to allocate money towards other expenditures over the coming year. Kudos to you, the developers and the marketing people at CD.

Here's a couple of photos of Gemini mounted to AF100. I know this is an F3 forum, but this will give you a good idea of the size of Gemini. It's about 10% larger (by volume) than the SmallHD DP6 LCD monitor.

Dear Friends,

The price of memory chips that go into Solid State Drives and other devices have been very volatile lately.

As such, we were reluctant to release the prices of the 256 GB and 512 GB 1.8" SSD's that we will offer for the Gemini 4:4:4. We were going to wait unti NAB for the price annoucement.

However, many have asked for the prices for planning purposes.

We will be offerring industry standard 1.8" SSD's, but they will be very high performance models.

We will be purchasing these in large quantities, then thoroughly testing them at both regular and elevated temperatures.

Our price for 256 GB SSD will be $749 and 512 GB will be $1,349.

These SSD's have a minimum sustained write speed of 260 Megabytes per second (MBps) which is far faster than CompactFlash cards which generally top out at around 90 MBps (SanDisk Extreme Pro).

For comparison, 256 GB of 64 GB SanDisk Extreme Pro currently cost $2,079.96 verus our price for a 256 GB SSD at $749.

For 512 GB, the comparison is $4,159.92 versus $1,349.

In both cases we are comparing the initial purchase price for highly resuable media.

These prices are subject to change due to market conditions beyond our control

for that kind of performance, worth every penny. 512 seems like the best deal going dollar for dollar per gb.

if you aren't rehousing the disks at all with no connectors or anything, I may just buy a few for my computers :)

Dear Tom,

No, we are not rehousing them, or making any other modifications.

We are just testing them to ensure that our customers are happy with the performance of the Gemini 4:4:4 and the media.

Good to know Dan, can't wait till these drives actually hit the consumer market. Really curious to see who's putting them out, my money is on intel :)

Are you able to talk about whether this will only record quicktime on release or some other time of file wrapper? Also wondering if it will be recording uncompressed YUV or full RGB.

Hi Dan, all of the above is very interesting ... one request ... your SSD transfer station ... please give it a 'thunderbolt' connection ... make the data totally super speed transferrable with 'certain' laptops ...

Dear Friends,

Our SSD's are SATA 6.0 Gb/s (6.0 Gigabits per second).

The eSATA interface is fine for uploading your footage to a computer.

And eSATA is more widely availble at this time.

Adding Thunderbolt may not increase the transfer speed, as the SSD is limited to the speed of SATA 6.0 Gb/s, but would significantly increase our cost of building the transfer station, which we include in the price of the Gemini 4:4:4.

In the future, Thunderbolt may become more widely available, and there may be Thunderbolt SSD's in the future.

if the gemini proves itself to deliver everything it promises and is rock solid in functionality, it's gonna be the #1 sought out offboard recorder in the industry for sure. i feel like codex and the obi-1 won't be used much anymore after this releases, and the solid state SR recorder might just be DOA.

I think you are right that the Sony solid state SR recorder will DOA.

But if I am not mistaken both Codex and OBI-1 support T-link for ArriRAW recording, which is one step up from the uncompressed 4:4:4 that the Gemini captures.

But i do think the Gemini will be a big success. It certainly is on my shipping list.

I would love if the touch screen was high quality enough for pulling focus, and accurate color, could really kill two birds with one stone, I woudn't need my on camera monitor at all and solely rely on the gemini. I really am wondering whats going to come of the sony recorder now that this is coming out... Unless prices are the same or under, theres no way it can compete... even at the same price, the Gemini is smaller, lighter, and has a touch screen/monitor.... the Sony recorder is very large (compared to the body of the camera) weighs in at quite a bit, and doesn't have any interface at all. I have a feeling for the F3 crowd the Sony recorder wouldnt get many sales.... for the 9000PL and the F23/35 owner/ops, they would most likely jump on it, considering they are used to the HDCAM workflow. As for the F3 users, they might be more incline to go a new route such as this.

look at the gemini pdf carefully, future update will be ARRIRAW.

but you need a T-link connection for that... sounds like a hardware update not firmware upgrade, if so...

it would totally be worth it, it's mentioned in preliminary articles the upgrade for arriraw and 3d left and right eye recording will be paid for upgrades with existing gemini units. so if it's hardware/firmware, it would totally be worth it either way. Useful in just about every high end digital cinema production that isn't RED.
