Gemini 4:4:4 Recorder

I guess what I'm getting at is... I dont know if the T-link option is really going to be available as an upgrade on existing models unless it would be a heavy modification to the box, unless it was already planned for and the space for it kept open. From what I've seen so far, theres no space for a T-Link port, unless you get rid of some connectors on the bottom

look at the gemini pdf carefully, future update will be ARRIRAW.

How are they going to update it without a physical T-Link connector? Dual SDI does not have the bandwidth for ArriRAW. Maybe they are talking about another device. Now that would be a seller, especially in light of the cost
of the T-link recorders from Codex and OBI

I think you are right that the Sony solid state SR recorder will DOA. ...

I have to disagree. Avid and FCP are going to be able to read SR natively. If you work on a show that shoots Sony, the SR recorder will have a lot of value. The biggest value of the Gemini is its flexibility. But if you know you only need SR and your post workflow is designed to work with SR, the SR recorder will be an obvious choice.

cost is also gonna be a big factor too though, even on the broadcast level. they are trying to save every penny possible. So if it's viable, and cheaper for them to record uncompressed and transcode to codec they need they will. the SR recorder will also mean solid state SR decks, and the offload device. It's a lot of money, and some networks might be all for it, a lot of others have a hard time even touching tapeless acquisition. It's gonna be a mixed bag, hell they might just find a 10 bit 422 pro res/dnxhd recording more than sufficient. either way, SR recording, tape or tapeless isn't gonna be the only game in town. it used to be hd content ended up on hdcam or SR one way or another.

hopefully we'll be moving into a future where the only tape we'll be using is LTO for backups and files based masters...

I personally know of a Top 30 market broadcast station shooting the PMW-500... in 35Mbps XDCAM-EX mode. The camera fully supports XDCAM HD 4:2:2 50Mbps, as does their AVID system, but the decision is based on a cost saving in data storage requirements.

Go figure.
