GH5 Game Over, Panasonic

Like Tom I think it looks like the GH5S and not the GH5. I have the GH5 and GH5S and there is a clear difference in image. Subtle but different . Will wait to see a direct comparison that I am sure someone will do. But until then it looks like the GH5S to me.

A full frame panasonic? Something tells me that rumor must be off in someway. Strange camera world we live in these days though.

When you guys say the image looks like a GH5s, what aspect of the image do you mean?

My mistake on the ISO, I thought I read 10,000, when it was 1,000

The color and the highlights. The light shining through the trees in Wyatt's forest, the hue of the foliage, to the warmth of Brawley's skin tone shots, the handling of mixed light, key light on the talent and city lights fill through the side windows, I see the underlying management of GH5s color in all the shots. I do not think it is a bad thing. GH5s color palette is neutral, the AWB is accurate. It's a good thing because you can move the grade in any direction without ever straying far. The color of the pocket 4k cinema cam is a clean departure from the orange/brown/magenta of the Ursa series (and Kinefinity) toward a neutral balance, Kodak Ektachrome look that includes natural green and blue.

Why does that rumor have to be off in some way? Moving to FF is not difficult at all for Panasonic. Only reason they didn't is because they were invested in the m43 market. Competition is heating up however and there is no reason why they can't have both a m43 and FF market much like Canon and Nikon had a APS-C and FF market.

It's stated on the details that they used ISOs 1000 to 3200. But in the quoted statement from John He stated "When you can get really great pictures at ISO3200 and above, things suddenly get very interesting." so perhaps they used higher iso. Would have been nice they labeled the shots with iso used.

Al of the true night shots I did where there were lights on in the BG were shot at ISO 3200.
The day shots were iso 1000 mostly.

Thanks for chiming in John. Did you lower the power of your lighting to match the outside/background?
I imagine the light in the room must be dark since I can clearly see that all the model's irises are so dilated! That means the models are in a dark environment.

Also, when do we get to see your BTS videos/photos that you usually share like with the ursa cameras? :)

Ok guys.
RAW footage by Blackmagic is released.

Time to say goodbye to Panasonic for me at least.
That footage is in a different league. Looks more like C200 RAW with nicer noise in the shadows... lol

Here's the ISO3200 clip graded and slightly denoised in Neatvideo/Davinci Resolve 15

The GH5 just looks terrible in comparison:
- highlights look amazing and show no signs of clipping (especially red channel)
- amazing skin tone detail, thanks to no denoising in camera
- no sharpening
- great color overall
- great noise structure (better than RED cameras and the C200 in RAW - Arri still wins this)

The ProRes log clips grade superbly!
Bravo to BlackMagic!

Resolve 15 still has the OFX 4K gamut conversion missing (it is available at the project level) and ProRes log clips get defaulted to Rec.709 at the input colorspace clip level.

Here is a comparison (gamma only, no gamut corrections) between the BM Film 4.6K and Pocket Film 4K log gamma curve:

By the way the Nature clip on the website indicates it is raw what I got was ProRes log.

Hi.

Yeah I basically was trying to keep the levels pretty low in the room so the outside would print though. I'm still getting schtick about "overlighting" but there's also a conspiracy theory about a "blue light" on one of the models lips.

Well, that's the blue LED from a Terradek TX and it's bright enough to have been showing up on the actors face. If that's not a good demonstration of how low light my "overlit" shots were I don't know what is :-)

In all seriousness, unlike previous iterations, I didn't have a lot of time with the camera. I had to shoot almost right away with it. Normally I'd be testing a lot more before a shoot like to get a feel of how it will perform in certain situations and this time around I just had to wing it.

The specific intention of this series I did was to shoot skin tones, under daylight dusk and tungsten. Tungsten has sometimes been a bit troublesome with BMD but I don't see anyone complaining about it now.

But really, do we need more of this hyperbole?

@stoneinapond...yes apparently some do...I like Panasonic cameras...I like the way they look....I find the image beautiful, including the GH cameras, and I really like shooting with them...but I never feel the need to call a Sony or Canon or BMD or any camera I don't use because I prefer Panasonic cameras for too many reasons to list hear terrible...I find this need to insult Panasonic tiresome and frankly bizarre

The GH5 does not look terrible in the big scale of things so if the BMPCC 4k makes it look terrible it sounds like hysteria rather than any rational evaluation and invites the inevitable disappointment when you actually get your hands on one......

I'm looking forward to the eventual side by side comparisons someone will do with the GH5s compared to the BMPCC4K, only then will we be able to say if BM have found the special source with the SAME sensor as the GH5s and is extracting any more from it.

That is not the only way. Load the sources in an NLE and compare how it grades. Comparing two resulting Rec.709 images only tells part of the story.

A lot of people are now knocking the quality of the GH5 picture, when i watch most broadcast tv and programns like Vanity Fair my GH5 looks a lot better.
