Fully Loaded Red Camera Pic

Here's a rendering I did of Red with a few extra features added. I added a HD monitor and digital lens control system. I also made a cool little click-n-lock system to lock accessories to the bars so you can remove them quickly - I hate spending 10 minutes looking for screwdrivers. The focus system is something we've been working on for a couple years, its full motion control with memory for several recordings and has a wireless/wired remote. I'm modelling a battery setup as well.

What I like about your design

What I like about your design

Curt,

What is funny to me here is that none of the mounting points on the REDCAGE are needed to get this camera fieldable. I guess your focus/zoom transmitter is on there with another accessory but technically not part of the cage.

May I suggest changing to a swingout mattebox and losing the front top rods and the extra metal thing? Also I think it really needs the Aaton style hand grip and the shoulder brace.

Also, we need an EVF with an eye cup!

If would be hilarious if you kept refining this thing and we can compare the CURTRED to the real thing when the time comes.

Thanks for keeping me entertained!

-Clayton Harper

P.S. Dear Red guys, please "borrow" the waveform/RGB parade implementation from the D-20 for Red One.

Looks great, Curt! Very nice 3D skills, dude... I agree with Clayton, however, in that it needs a shoulder pad under the thing, a hand grip, and a viewinder with an eyecup. The cage is interesting for some uses, but I feel for handheld work it's better off without all that extra metal. Just stick the lens on the body and put it on your shoulder.

This is not to take anything away from your rendering. It looks fantastic! Just some more suggestions on alternate variations. That's the beauty of RED... modularity!

Yep, get a shoulder pad in there, and a proper viewfinder, a big battery to balance the rear end, and some matte box flags. Then it will be complete! Cool render!

Not sure about all these mounting holes though. It looks a bit like a Lego camera! Not that I'll complain if the camera does what it says on the box mind, but I can see me getting some "Hey is that thing made from Meccano?" comments! Is there a practical need for all the holes in all those mounting rods? Most things do just fine when they clamp on, and those holes will weaken the rods. Might look a lot less Meccano too.

That looks completely awesome. Red really should include a lens on the front of their promotional renderings; obviously the camera is going to need them - I don't think anyone is scratching their heads wondering how it's going to work - but it just makes the package look so much nicer when it's "complete." Also, that wireless focus/iris system looks amazing... I would be completely interested in a product like that.

The "lego"-esque mounting holes are all part of the RED CAGE ONE (which has been viewable online as long as the camera has), and not part of CVB's additions - so you can't fault him for that. But honestly, if that's what a moderately "pimped out" RED camera is going to look like then I'm way stoked. Awesome job CVB.

the rods and the looks for this camera kind of follow suit for everthing else about this camera -- namely how other cameras look or do things is irrelevant.

bound to be a few head scratching choices but those will be far overshadowed by the many "I can't believe nobody ever did it like that before" moments, IMHO

it looks frickin sweat, but imagine a zepplin sized one of those things hovering over your home town ... yikes, the invasion has begun ... :)

Now the pics I saw originally of red ..... well I thought OK . But if looks meant anything thats awesome.

Wow... lots of great comments. So I agree that the holes in the rods aren't really necessary but it would be nice to have dimples to give it that look. I did some renderings without the dimples and it doesn't look as cool. I gotta say that Jim & company have mad ID skillz - the more of these things I model the more I realize that sometimes its better to throw caution to the wind and go with a design that looks the way you want it to rather than dwelling over if it can be manufactured or not. (I'm usually limited to what I can make in my machine shop)

I took everyones comments and busted out another rendering for your viewing pleasure. This one doesn't look as good as the other, I think I lost the reflecty floor look somehow. Keep in mind that I'm a lowly Engineer type so my freeform modeling comes out a little choppy sometimes.

Someone asked for a QTVR, I can't really export in that format but here's a E-drawing and avi http://viewfactorstudios.com/downloads/red/red.exe , http://viewfactorstudios.com/downloads/red/red.avi

By the way are those 10mm rods?
10mm rods are generally way too thin and flexible.
15mm is the minimum size I would recommend for cinema accessories.

And what about using carbonfiber instead?
