FS7: FS7 successor (rumours/expectations)

Hi guys,

let's stay realistic. Anything that needs higher computing power (like eye AF etc.) won't come.
But there is one thing that SONY keeps from us which is easily possible for the FS7 (even MK1): it is internal XAVC480 (up to 4k 30p).
In times of RAW it won't be "good enough" for many people (*sigh*) but the rest (like Piotr, me etc.) will appreciate it.

Cheers,
Alex

My take is that changing some internals on the camera - an FS-7 MKIII, if you will - is not difficult. Sensor, computational power, media size/speed/costs are moving like a Ruf 911 on the Autobahn in the late-night hours. And the original was made four years ago and is swerving into the right lane behind a Trabant.

Of course SONY could bring a MkIII - but to me Doug sounds more like new firmwares and/or accessories (new RAW unit?) for the FS7s. Hence I was talking about what's possible with the existing FS7.

Well, at least it's encouraging that in 2019 they will still be showing the FS7 II. Hopefully some love will trickle down to FS7 I. Why's everything on Sunday? I'm ready to hear it now.

From the looks of it, FS-7 will remain such.

Which means the future announcements and/or developments may come either for Cinegear or the fall. A 4 year cycle and all.

Bis bald.

I also think it's a new codec like XEVC.

Also, Sony likes to introduce new products at the Amsterdam IBC, I think this year we will (finally) get the A7S III. It's been 2 years I wait this model to come up at this convention.

Is an FS7 mkIII or a new model number really that relevant ?

I suppose it depends what the changes are... In many ways the original FS7 was well 'protected' when Sony introduced the FS7 MkII. The cameras still use the same memory cards and sensor -- and intercut well.

Compare that to what Canon did when they introduced the C300 MkII -- moving from CF cards to cFast cards to allow for higher bit rate recordings -- not to mention that there is nothing easy about trying to get the C300 MkII to match the original C300 if you're doing a 2 or 3 camera sit-down interview.

In reading all the 'hoping for' features, it's sometimes best to remember that minor usability improvements can sometimes be preferable to huge re-designs -- particularly if you already have one or two FS7's and are thinking of adding another. One of the great things about a camera becoming widely accepted and available is that it's easy to rent an extra one for a multicam shoot -- and one of the things Sony has been protecting so far within each product line is your ability to do that.

Of course we're just a few hours from the press flooding into the NAB booths, so between today and tomorrow many questions will be answered.

The ‘mobile media consumption’ line leads me to believe they are adding a vertical crop mode. And the next version will feature a rotatable sensor... You heard it here first.

Anyone that knows me, knows that I hate vertical video so bad that I even yell at my audio guy when he takes them for one of our talent for their Instagram page.

I like vertical video only with the concept of it being an extended "live photo". IE you want to hold the phone perfectly steady as if you're taking a portrait photo (say of a tall building, or something where the content is vertical) and then you record 10-15 seconds without moving, just to get the motion and audio. I've used that when travelling and it can be a fun way to capture a cool back alley way, or a tall castle, etc.

The rumors on A7SIII is fall 2019 ... whether it's the arrival or the announcement.

As to HEVC, I kind of doubt it. Sony has its own line of proprietary codecs that it can stick with.

Of course, ProRes Raw could open up its eco system a little.

Sony's live-streaming at 2 PM PST (5 PM EST) today, Sunday, the 7th.

So at the NAB press conference, Sony launched the CBK-FS7BK ENG Style Build-up Kit for FS7/FS7II (linked below). I cannot help but feel that this new piece of equipment means that Sony doesn't intend on upgrading the FS7 line for a while. I'm actually kinda pleased in a way because it makes me feel like they plan to continue supporting the FS7 the foreseeable future. That's pretty nice from an investment standpoint.

I remember talking with a Sony Europe representative who told me about the development of such kit. It got out of my mind because I don't do broadcast/ENG but I see that's finally happened. Quite... nice I think ?

Well, last "interesting" thing before end of life cycle for the FS7. Honestly, I'm still very satisfied with my MkI every time I look at the pictures it produces. Of course I'm tempted by newer cameras like the Panasonic EVA-1 or the Blackmagic ones but... still faithful to Sony ! And nothing justifies switching to a new one for me. Plus, I love E Mount and Speedbooster.

On the other hand, I will preorder de A7S III as soon as I can, if it can fulfill the "beyond customers expectations" promise. 4K 60p and 10 bit is all that I want but if we can get more like IBIS, sure ! No 8K please, that's just silly...

It is interesting though, that the Kit is supposed to be released in December, so I guess, the old FS7 I/II will be around for a little while more. Maybe, there still will be a few nice updates for us, on the road ahead.
