FS7: FS7 successor (rumours/expectations)

So, it seems FS-7 is staying for now. But will there be an FS-9 down the road ... shortly down the road?

I remember talking with a Sony Europe representative who told me about the development of such kit. It got out of my mind because I don't do broadcast/ENG but I see that's finally happened. Quite... nice I think ?

Well, last "interesting" thing before end of life cycle for the FS7. Honestly, I'm still very satisfied with my MkI every time I look at the pictures it produces. Of course I'm tempted by newer cameras like the Panasonic EVA-1 or the Blackmagic ones but... still faithful to Sony ! And nothing justifies switching to a new one for me. Plus, I love E Mount and Speedbooster.

On the other hand, I will preorder de A7S III as soon as I can, if it can fulfill the "beyond customers expectations" promise. 4K 60p and 10 bit is all that I want but if we can get more like IBIS, sure ! No 8K please, that's just silly...

That's something that a lot of people need to get out of their heads. Who cares if you don't do "broadcast/ENG"? It's the form factor and features that make "ENG" cameras so powerful, regardless of whether you're shooting news or narrative.

But... That build-up looks like a joke on the 7.

Wow, this is so underwhelming. It's basically XDCA + URX-P03D in one box with repackaged F5 EVF. All together will probably weight a ton, cost an arm and a leg making it a kit for broadcast stations not for mere mortals.
Good news is that they keep FS7 alive but at this point, I think I'd rather have a new, lighter model with good AF. The fact that there's no camera significantly better at a similar price point than FS7 makes me stuck with it, no purchase will be justified.

Well my guess was pretty close. I guess that price includes the VF. Overall just a bunch of pieces from the Sony parts bin...

Yeah, it isn't quite what I was expecting. I'm always trying to lighten the rig, not bulk it up. That's why I was hoping for some kind of paid firmware upgrade, given what the sensor is capable of.

That looks exactly like the F5 / 55 lcd evf. If it’s as expensive as those this kit will cost a fortune. I’m personally hoping they sell it separately for those of us who just don’t want the stock evf.

Kit will cost 6500 euro

B4 adapter 5000 euro

This is my opinion, if I’m looking into a S35 news gathering camera today, and I don’t own an FS7, I’m just looking for used Amira’s. For people who already own them this is very niche. I’d love to see the evf sold separately.

+1 on that. To me the VF is the 7's Achilles heel. A good VF would make all the difference. The rest I can live without. None of it is looking cheap though! For Sony the FS7 has been a big success in the rental market. Besides that it is still a top seller in the S35 solo operator market. On those two factors alone Sony probably see no good reason to replace it anytime soon. As someone else pointed out as old as the FS7 is there is still no real competition at its price point that offers 4K 422 10-bit 50/60p on board.

I'm still scratching my head a bit... It's not that I'm against this new "kit" per se... Certain things about it, like being able to power a broadcast lens easily and the lens adapter itself is intriquing.... but why oh why has it taken Sony over 4 years to release something like this - for one of their popular cameras??

So, "ENG" Kit and Fs7 together are about $15,000USD. You can easily get into a used F55 for that or less and have a much better camera and much "svelter"/streamlined package.

All of that being said though... There are lots of guys that have migrated away from their true ENG cameras and have been using Fs7's and F5/55's for ENG for several years, now. Me, on the other hand, I still LOVE my P2 VariCam and when I need to do ENG, that's what I shoot on. I even still use it on feature's when it makes more sense, because of the capabilities of the glass and what we're doing, exactly.

When you cant really upgrade your line because you spread thin and upgrading will cannibalize your own investments..... what a narrowminded setup.

From what I see over here people in the business are moving back away from the middle and going for either lighter setups even choosing mirrorless over cameras like fs7 or they are going for the more expensive setups that have higher dynamic range and more pleasing colors.
Heck, Ill never upgrade to that package...

Let's assume A7SIII gets announced by fall. Then Sony still has a big gap between FS-7 and Venice. That might be its next camera, something in the $20K range.

Unless that spot is ceded to the Canon cam, a C500MKII.

I think the C500 was a one-and-done. The C100 line may be done too. Maybe a C400 would be more fitting.

The FS9-like camera is probably going to be really nice.

Lol. This is what all the hype was about? Color me bored and underwhelmed.

Wasn't even worth the time spent speculating!

All the fs7 really needs in V mount, decent EVF and TC in.. the V mount /TC in could be a really slim attachment ..

Its called the F5?

Sony are indeed really in a hole with the Fs8 without it killing the F5/55 or being a tiny worthless upgrade.

Maybe they should just cut the cost of the 5/55 as thier next radical move or merge the two lines.

Or they need a proper new concept in cameras.. AF for cinematography, built in wireless everything. (audio receivers, vision out)

Sony is in a hole because of the FS7. It's just so damn good there's little room to do anything without stepping into their higher end cameras. Personally I think the FS7 mkII is to pricey as it's stepping into the F5 range so they made it very difficult to squeeze anything in between. And as they continue to sell the older mk1 for most cameras as their business model it will become harder and harder to squeeze things in.

The FS7 is still pretty horrible to use - crappy VF, dodge Luts etc force one into third party monitoring and batteries, no audio in S+Q etc, no 4 chan audio without the shoe.

One thing they could do is split the road between 'production' cameras and 'corporate/actuality' cameras

The 7 is flawed with emount for production as you cant really hang cine zooms off it, unlike the F5 mount that Ive forgotten the name of (!)

The 5/55 could have upgrades like remote monitoring transmission while the FS7+ concentrates on getting stuff onto 'social' and for example could be tricked out to hang a RX100 off it.

They could develop an emount MFT crop proper plastic zoom etc.
