Folder Structure

The GH1 has a strange folder structure. I'm not used to dealing with this. I'm used to individual mov files. My problem is that I don't offload my video for days at a time. So I could have several days of video in that PRIVATE folder. But the way I store my video/photos is by this structure:

Camera > Dated Folder > Files

So how do I split up the videos in that private folder? Can I just pull out the M2T's and delete everything else or does that screw something up?

it depends on your NLE. If it doesn't support native .mts files and you need to log and transfer, then the NLE will need to see the whole file structure.

I use Premiere Pro CS4/5. It seems to read the mts files just fine. I guess that answers my question. But what do all these other files do?

I keep the whole structure in tact just in case a mac person needs it. I don't know exactly whats in the other magic files. First thing I do though is to start going through the clips and adding names to the number files so it's 00002-wide-master-kitchen-t1.mts ect, so that at least if I have to move things around the NLE wont get crazy confused if you have different folders from different shoot days all with the same file names.

The extra data files may keep track of the files and the numbering system. It may also keep thumbnails of each video. This takes up a little space on the card every time you shoot something and your available space shrinks a little.

You can just delete the MTS within STREAM, the JPG and MOV, etc. in DCIM and trash. The next time you shoot, the numbers continue in sequence. Once you reformat the card, the numbering resets to 0 ( and the filing madness begins!) However, reformatting may be necessary if the card is corrupt or to prevent fragmented files.

There are some apps which make a mirror image of the SD card in ISO format, for archiving.

What do you mean by that? I edit on a mac to begin with. So are you saying that I need those extra files then. Because Premiere Pro CS5 on mac does read the mts files just fine by themselves.

I wrote an import utility that might meet your needs. Check it out at: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?216893-PHOTOfunStudio-Replacement

There is an option (Add date sub-folders) to create sub-folders for each date video was shot.

Thanks but I am on a mac so that utility isn't too useful. lol

I'm pretty sure that Blackout meant that if you're editing with FCP. In FCP, without the file structure you can't log and transfer. You should be good with P-Pro.
