The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

Well, the only way it would be better would be if it worked the way the HV20 HDMI output works, which is to send a signal prior to HDV compression. I don't know if that's the case, but it seems possible. I'd tell you to look it up in the DMovie section of the manual.. but I'd just be joking :)

I think it's a crapshoot on whether or not BestBuy carries them and it seems like something they wouldn't stock. And if they do, they're probably Monster Cable brand and cost $100.

But even without the cable you could tell us one thing. How much of the image in the live view LCD has info or overlays on top of it? The images of the screen on DPreview are all from an older verison and not of the D90 at all, I don't think. Are there numbers and things over the picture? How about focus points or squares or whatever? Or is the image itself uncluttered?

The image itself, or what the camera records, is actually left without many overlays. Once you hit record it shows you what you're recording, framed in dark edges.

Alright... well, 70.00 is worth finding out if there's something else that can go on with this camera. And reporting it to you guys.

Be right back.

Verdict: Stay away from HDMI out at all costs.

It will probably make you actually not want to keep the camera... Dunno WHY these guys said that the HDMI looked great. Unless it was still images, cause this stuff looks HORRID HD out, as far as video goes.

My attempt at Zak's footage:

(upconverted to 1080p, adjusted channels, curves, jpeg artifact removal, regrain- to hide compression)

Wow.... well, that answers THAT question!

Noooooo

Noooooo

Please say that you are joking..
I was hoping to record it with a portable HDMI capture station..

No joke what-so-ever. The HDMI out looks the same. =(

The actual STILL images look immaculate, right down to the last bit you can zoom in after the capture. But, the footage? No way.

Heck, even this in 720p would look better than the original! And it's EXTRA compression! How did you go about doing this and can you do it to an entire clip for comparison?

So this is the HDMI out from the DSLR mode ? Maybe the video mode gives better quality..

Thanks for all the work Kholi..Really appreciated..

hunter. how did you apply the jpeg artifact removal?

i think the image looks great, btw. Zak's stuff has been promising.

I think this is a camera for the web. I think theatrical release or a festival short is unrealistic.

what resolution was the hdmi outputting. i believe that dpreview said it supported up to 1080i. is it outputting a 1080i signal? are you able to set what the hdmi outputs? if so you would want to change it so it outputs to 720p, that is if you can. otherwise then the signal is being downconverted from the sensor then upconverted for hdmi which would be horrid in itself so if that can be changed see if that does anything.

i kinda think though that the video in liveview or hdmi wouldnt be setup for absolute best quality output because i doubt they were thinking of this camera being used like this, i bet it was just set up for it to be useable from a very basic point of view so i think that any internal processing are geared towards what is quick and as least demanding rather than optimal quality.

finally while there has been quite a few let downs with this whole setup, from my nerdy technical side i still see this camera as having a lot of the right tools available in its construction such as sensor/nikon mount and the such but the implementation has just been all wrong. with the exception of the rolling shutter because that is mostly a hardware issue, this thing has a lot of the tools in place to make a pretty badass camera for shooting 720p but like i said, the implementation of it is just a heartache.

that being said i feel like it maybe/might/hopefully could be possible for some type of mod/hack, something maybe even more than just a firmware update. what about taking dissecting and taking out the elements from the camera that are useable and building a custom hardware/firmware based camera while finding some what to extract that signal for a clean uncompressed hdmi out. someway of altering the camera after it has been captured from sensor but before it enters into any kind of compression algorithm. yeah this could be a a rediculous undertaking but im curious if at all possible and at what costs. if through research its found that there might be some kind of way to use this the way i want to that wont be rediculously intensive or having to redesign any PCBs than i think this could be an option. a hydra mod on steroids or something.

now ill be getting the d90 in a day or so, now i just need to get a second one to take apart and investigate

A big thankyou to all those going pushing the boundaries and sharing your findings.

Can anyone report what usable iso is? If shooting a short with controllled lighting, how would the the d90 compare with hvx and adapter? Do the auto settings make this problematic?
