FCP not recognizing A1 ?

Have you all tried changing the [Playback STD] setting within the A1 menu? See pages 95 and 109 of the A1 manual.

I found that if it's set to "Auto" FCP didn't recognize the A1. Changing it to HDV did the trick.

I don't get it it either.

I have been importing footage fine off of my HV20 and A1 with the easy setup in Final Cut 6.0.1. (HDV, HDV 1080p24, 23.98)

Then out of the blue it won't recognize either camera. Down convert is off, STD is HDV...

I was able to fix this by reopening FCP...but not anymore, also imovie does not see the cameras either....

Any ideas...?
 
iMovie will recognize the A1 but only tapes shot in HD, will not import SD footage. What the heck? Did Canon not use FCP or iMovie to test at all? Anyone know if they have the same issues with intel macs? I'm still on PPC.

Hey, it works for me with 5.1.4

Here's my basics

Recording at 24f
FCP 5.1.4 on Powerbook 1.5 gig ram saving on usb2 harddrive.
A/V settings as quoted.
Make sure the A1 in the signal setup menu make sure hd down convert is turned off.

That could be one of those obvious steps people accidentally skip over. Because if it is, your comp recognizes it as a regular sd camera.

My MBP did this because it developed a problem with its firewire-400 port. The port does not present external voltage. It is troublesome because some devices work (my FS-C for instance) and some won't ( my LaCie rugged drives, PreSonus FireBox, and the A1). Not worth fixing yet since I can use my big mac to transfer but it was frustrating on the job where I had planned on using the port.

My Playback STD is greyed out, as well as the down convert option... any ideas why?

I had the same problem with my ai with pp. I really dont know why Cannon continues with their proprietary 24f crap. It would make thins alot easier if they switched over to true 24p. My 2 cents.

I think you need to disconnect the Firewire, turn off the camera, and then go into the VCR/Play menu. I seem to recall those settings remain greyed out if you leave the Firewire cable attached. So change these settings first, then connect Firewire.

This really isn't relevant, accurate, or helpful. 24F=24P.

Helpful, not really, but his relevance and accuracy are better than you believe.

24f and 24p yield similar results through different methods. 24p is proprietary and something canon didn't want to pay for.

The relevance is that if canon used 24p instead one wouldn't be having a lot of these fcp problems.

But shoulda, woulda, coulda just doesn't fix anything, so yeah not too helpful.


Good call on the unplugging the firewire before being able to change the settings, was getting ready to jump in with that.

Fair enough.

I just don't think this particular problem has anything to do with 24F, but rather with a tempermental Firewire / FCP interface. If the camera isn't recognized by FCP at all and not showing up with "VTR OK," it's not because you shot in 24F. Right?

Just trying to help by keeping the issues clear.

Try a different Firewire cable?
 
bumping because I'm having similar issues and I have a project that is due tomorrow (yeah I'm a procrastinator and haven't even logged/captured the footage from the minidv tapes until right now). alright, so this is what is going on:

I'm using FCP 5.0.4 (this might be the source of all problems, but humor me) and I can import all footage shot in SDV fine, at whatever framerate. unfortunately, I shot this last project in HDV at 24F and now when I hook up my cam to my computer and click the log and capture button it gives me an error reading "unable to initialize video deck. you may still log offline clips or use capture now".

on the cam, playback is set to HDV and HDV down conversion is off. in final cut pro, the only options I have for HDV in easy setup are 1080i50, 1080i60 and 720p30 - same in audio/video settings.

so my question boils down to this: is my problem of not being able to log/capture HDV coming down to the fact that I'm using an older version of final cut pro? if not, what can I do to fix it so I can - because, at this point, I can't even see options to import what I want to import on the tape (because the tape has footage shot at 24F and there are no options for that, that I can see).
