Experimenting with DVX200 Color

Thank You Barry, I think I just need to find a good dealer to purchase one from at a fair price. I love B&H, but they don't discount. I'm going to see what this 2016 NAB show release's and then make a decision.
Again thank you for your great Info.

Camcorder Vs DSLR/Mirrorless

Camcorder Vs DSLR/Mirrorless

Hey Mapper65, how do you like going from a DSLR or Mirrorless to a Camcorder ?

Thanks mapper65, That helps a lot! Do you think the Video Quality is as good as your D800, and many of the canon DSLR's? How does it hold up in post, I use Adobe PP CC, with Lumenti.
Thankzs again

I'd say it's a comparable look to a DSLR. I know that doesn't give you much to go on and it may sound like it could be negative but it's a different look and I'm not sure I can describe the difference at this time. It's equally as clear, maybe not quite as much depth of field as I can get with some of my prime DSLR lenses. I pointed something out the other day to someone who was editing something that I shot. This guy likes to do a lot of cropping and zooming around and it holds up way better than my Sony FX1 from a clarity standpoint. Also I can get some very useful footage out of the D800 at ISO 6400 and it seems like the you don't want to go any further than ISO 2000 with the DVX200.

Hey Mapper65, how do you like going from a DSLR or Mirrorless to a Camcorder ?

I've shot with a little bit of everything over the years so switching between cameras isn't too big of deal. The key is to know them all intimately and what their advantages, disadvantages and capabilities are. Occasionally I'll spin my wheels for a minute finding a certain feature in a menu. That's a drawback of shooting with more than one camera.

I love shooting with a DSLR but in some situations it's just not practicle. I have more time in shooting with video cameras than I do anything else but I've done a lot of still work so using a DSLR is pretty much just shooting consecutive stills which I guess all video is really that. I recently bought a little LUMIX LX100 to take on trips and I'm not comfortable with it yet but it produces some great images for its size.

The best thing you can do is get comfortable with your camera. Scrutinize the heck out of your footage on every shoot. Everything that I shoot even if I'm not the one editing it, I still pull it into my computer and analyze it from all aspects. What did I do good at, what can I improve on and what didn't I have any control over and learn from all of that. Don't be tough on yourself. If it was easy, everyone could do it. If you take the time to really know your cameras eventually something clicks and you'll know just what to do in most situations.

Also, learn from others. I have good friend that's been a producer/director for over 40 years and I bounce stuff off of him all of the time. He's taught me most of what I know. One of the most important things that I always try to pass on that he told me in the beginning is "light for the camera, not for your eyes".

That last tip is a great one! As long as there is support, which there seems to be, for the DVX200, I don't mind learning. I don't shoot in pressure situations like weddings, or fast paced Run n Gun situations. One thing I do love about my RX-10 M2 is I use it on a lot of tools, like sliders, jibs. and I'm just now getting use to using a Beholder DS-1 Hand-Held Stabilizer, that works very well. I know I won't be able to use the DVX200 on it, but that's ok. I think that the reason your seeing your DVX200's clips holding up so well in post is, due to the clips high MBPS, that is attractive for me. Well. Thanks very much for the help and dialogue Mapper65.
Going down to Charleston to shoot some stock footage for a few days, looking forward to it. Thanks

I'm really excited! I took the still scene file for the natural color pallette for a spin today and I love it. I'll upload it and share at some point tonight.

Hi Brad, it looks pretty good! Are you shooting in manual or auto? The scene with the birds looked just a little hot. It looked like there was some lost detail around the bird's necks, if a bird has a neck. Also the arm of the guy fishing in the dark blue shirt looks just a little hot. Both acceptable but right on the borderline. Minding your zebra or waveform can keep that from happening. It very well could be because I'm watching your video on an old iPad 2. Overall I'd say things look very good. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks mapper. I was shooting on manual and I only had about an hour to get as much as I could. But yes, you're right, I should be taking advantage of the exposure tools.

Colors getting way better...

Colors getting way better...

check this video....colors are getting way better. the only challenge is mixed lighting..

I shoot at 24fps, iso less than 1000 using led lights with filters on...match room light Tungsten (3200K) I was using YN600 LEDs....

Any suggestions...??? of course graded in Premier Pro cc....and also used out of the camera scene file 1

I think it looks very good! Once something is graded you can't really comment on color because that's more of a personal preference. As long as he footage doesn't appear to be over graded and yours does not, then I'd say everything looks just fine.

Hey Barry, You have been so helpful, I hope you can advise on this. I'm looking for a Zoom Camera Control to use with the DVX-200 on a tripod. I have found this one, but, I can't seem to find if it is compatible with the DVX-200. Will it work, Any limitations or cons to be aware of? It's a
Varizoom VZRock-PZFI Rocker Controller. Thanks in advance.

I have that controller and it works perfectly with my DVX200 as well as three other Panasonic cameras (PX270, HMC80, AF100).

Thanks Barry and Greg! I just didn't research enough, and found out the same thing by going to Varizoom direct and checking on it. I'm glad it works well.

I am using this product...it works well....only the zoom part....focus part is not working well...some reason when I plug in zoom and focus....camera auto focus disables .... second issue the speed ...its very hard to control speed when zoom out.

zoom in is smooth...but zoom out is very fast....

I looked at that Libec, I think I'm going with the Varizoom. I could be wrong but that makes sense to me that the camera would go to manual when the Libec is plugged in, giving you the control instead of Auto being Auto?

When the Varizoom is plugged in, you leave the camera set to auto focus at all times. Then, you use the switch on the Varizoom controller to toggle between auto (which works as usual) and manual focus, which must be done using the large knob on the controller. It works fine once you get used to the protocol.

That Libec specifically says that it's limited in its compatiblity with panasonics. In my opinion it's not a good choice for a Panasonic.
