Experimenting with DVX200 Color

Okay, gotcha. Perfect. Thanks again for checking that for me Mapper. Big big help!

No problem. That is part of the issue with not being able to name scene files. That would make things so much easier but I suspect that we will never see that option at least with the DVX200. It makes me wonder if Panasonic just doesn't realize how confusing this is. Probably if they did allow you to name the files the next complaint from consumers would be that they don't allow enough text in the description.

I would even be happy if they allowed you to put a name in one of the parameters for the scene and even though you picked SCN1-SCN6 then you could at least go into the parameters of the scene and see something like "Pana GH4 Still Like". I have to believe that would be a simple solution without having to change much of the layout of the menus. I guess we can dream.....

DSLR Scene files - Beautiful results

DSLR Scene files - Beautiful results

All, I shoot a graduation function...with DSLR scene files....with bit black gamma set to 0...results were so good.

UHD 24fps
ISO 1000-1600
YN600 led lights 3 with orange gel on
Temp 2950k
results were so good...
JUST OUT OF CAMERA...no grading no edit..just raw

That looks perfectly fine. Actually looks like DSLR footage – which is what you wanted – but I know that you had a much easier time shooting with the DVX200 than any DSLR. I'm also a fan of those YN600 LED lights.

Maybe internal mic doing best it can with the venue's acoustics and the PA system?

Not bad but kind of off balance. I'm nearly deaf in my right ear and when I can hear something louder in my right ear than in my left ear, something isn't quite right. I was listening with headphones. At first I thought maybe the PA speakers were over on the right side but i didn't hear as much clapping in the left channel either. Not a big deal.

The audio is definitely hotter on the right. Pan pots weren't aligned or auto was on one but not the other? Or, left channel is another mic somewhere else in the room and right channel is mic closest to the PA system. He did say it's raw, so that might explain it. Not a big deal, anyway...

Right...I have left mic setup as internal and right on external shotgun...but the sounds is real horrible...just a cheap 100 dollars PA system and mic is on/off ...bottom line I am not worried much I will fix in post. thank you ALL for inputs..

for me, it varies scenario to scenario. which is why (after the first few months) i never really gave a crap about scene files.

Barry,
I am sorry for asking a Q outside of this subject. I just bought dvx200 and finally am getting clear answer from your Guide. It does not output UHD 59.94P 4:2:2 at 10 bits even if the recorder could record it (there are new once about to hit the market). I fear it is inherent limitation. Do you think it could ever be changed by updating firmware to change compression parameters to keep the same recording rate and thus "stuff" this format?
Thanks.

I doubt that could change given the current generation of hardware. Maybe in a DVX250 or DVX200A or some other new generation of hardware. I mean, maybe it could happen, but I doubt it; situations like this are usually hardware limited.

Ok, Where do you get Barry's Scene files? GH4, or do you just go to scene 4 and change the settings that mapper65 has posted here?

Start with my information on this page to get a better understanding of scene files before you get started.

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...really-need-some-help-installing-scene-files&

Go here to get the GH4 still like scene file. It will be in the file that you download as SCN4. In the link above I mention backing up the factory scenes to scene1.txt and recommend renaming the file that you will download below to scene7.txt prior to saving it to your SD card. Either way the GH4 still like file will remain in position SCN4 when you are ready to load it into the DVX200. On my camera I saved my factory scenes to scene1.txt and have Barry's scenes in scene2,3&4 and have the GH4 still like scene in scene5.txt just to keep all of the scenes in a row. You can do this however you choose to make it easier for you to remember.

Here is where you will download Barry's scenes. Just remember that your camera should be set to the 1.4 setting in order for the scenes to render the colors as he had originally designed.

http://www.fiftv.com/DVX200/DVX200-Scene-Files.zip

Here are the details of each of the scene files. You'll have to drill down through the Private folder in that zip file to fine the scenes. The scenes are scene2.txt through scene4.txt.

SCENE2.TXT: GH4 emulation scene files
SCN1: Natural
SCN2: Scenery
SCN3: Portrait
SCN4: CINE-D
SCN5: CINE-V
SCN6: Standard
SCENE3.TXT
SCN1: DSLR (an attempt to emulate a typical Canon DSLR's look)
SCN2: PX270 (an attempt to emulate the PX270's default Scene File 1 look)
SCN3: Accurate (a scene file that puts all the vectors in the boxes on a vectorscope)
SCN4: Deep (rich, deep color, deep blacks, and loads of dynamic range)
SCN5: Hot (dusty, dry, hot look, makes your footage look like a spaghetti western)
SCN6: Cold (dark, blue, and frosty-looking)
SCENE4.TXT - These are generally simulations of the existing scene files from the Panasonic website. We had previously done a number of scene files for various cameras; these scene files match the HPX250's version of those scene files.
SCN1: Comedy
SCN2: Drama
SCN3: Hollywood
SCN4: Stylin'
SCN5: Rich
SCN6: People (this actually matches the HPX250/AF100/AC160 etc's "Portrait" scene file, but since the GH4 named its standard scene 3 "portrait", I thought it'd be confusing to name two different scene files "portrait", so I changed this one to "people"

Hey Mapper65, Thanks for the post and info. But, for right now I'm a little overwhelmed and that scene process seems a little crazy to implement.

Barry did a nice video on scene files. Here is a link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uGCo1lsa1M

Don't hold me to it but I've been thinking about putting a video together that explains scene files in more detail. Barry's video is more of an overview of what scene files do. Mine would be more from the perspective of how to move the files around and implement them. I think there is way more detail that most people need to know in order to fully understand how that process works. You may get the process down before I get the video together so don't wait for me. I see it being a rather lengthy video and if I get bored one of these days I may put something together.

I think your right. I also think that Panasonic could have done a better job of implementing it.

That would be great!

So I finally downloaded the GH4 "Standard" scene file for a shoot where I needed to match the two yesterday. Made some modifications that didn't quite turn out the way I wanted, but overall all I can say is "Daaaaaaaaaang"...

Pity it took six months for Panasonic to get it right, but holy crap I couldn't be happier with the image right now.
