Experimenting with DVX200 Color

I've been experimenting with a new color palette for the DVX200. Here are some sample shots, let me know what you guys think.

Disclaimers: each shot represents two different color palettes. Shots were taken using the exact same white balance, exposure, focus, everything the exact same, I just changed the color palette in the camera. No post-processing of any type other than to split-screen them to make the pictures as you see here. No grading or post manipulation of the color was done. If there's any difference other than the color palette, it's possible that the clouds may have changed position between shots, so -- there's no guarantee that they're exactly the same lighting, but I did try to make them the same. In each image there's two pictures that are roughly comparable framing and subject; one uses the stock DVX200 Scene File 1 with all settings at factory default; the other image uses the new color palette.

I think your color is a large improvement. Amazing how bad the stock color looks. Barry, when I had this camera for a day, I was unhappy with the low mids down to shadows areas. These areas had very low color saturation and quite frankly mud that reminded me of the GH2 image. Have you found this to be true and have you been able to correct this? Next to my PX270, the DVX200's images were nowhere near imho.

Lovely!

I like the warmer set on the left.
I spend a lot of time at the 2 Phoenix area Zoos and the set on the left feels just like how I feel it in person. The slight sunny yellow always feels like it's there if it's not a cloudy day.

At first look I was going to say that I like the one on the left better but I see some good qualities in both. I think the one on the right is probably the more realistic of the two but without being there to compare that more of a guess on my part. In the right image of the flamingos the dark area of the rocks seems like it should be just a little darker but when I compare the dark spots on the giraffe in both images they seem similar. Not sure what to think about that.

Left side looks more like Sony color, poppy lime/greenish tones, I prefer the right side, to my eyes the color looks more natural. Goes to show how subjective color really is.

Hi Barry, I am happy with my settings so far, I just find the whites blow out pretty easy,

1-What setting do you use , or suggest, knee On - Off - Auto (settings ? ) it happens in both setting Nautual External or Internal Lighting.
2- what setting is used to create a better dynamic Range.
Thanks.

It's hard to judge them without any human flesh tones in the sample images, but the left one definitely looks too yellow/green to me.

At one time you mentioned you were working on a scene file to match the DVX200 to the default PX270 profiles. Are you anywhere near being able to release that?

I like the more natural colours of the pictures on the right, but maybe with a touch more chroma added, as they appear to be 'duller' than those on the left.

Cheers,

Vaughan

Hey guys, thanks for looking at the pix and letting me know what you think.

This isn't anything I'm doing -- this is something Panasonic has been doing. And the good news is -- you can have both, if you prefer one or the other. Announcement in this thread.

I look forward to those of the natural human body colors, which
the existing my cameras were able, or for example any Canon dSLR cameras

I am waiting to get new firmware as kid waiting for candy :)....hope they release new firmware in days.
I'm with you on that. Most of my cameras I'm still using the default scenes which works well under nearly every lighting condition. I was really hoping for that the day that I took my DVX200 out of the box.

I'm sure I'm limiting myself by using a default scene files but they've always looked good to my eyes and I've never received a negative comment back from any organization or network that I've shot for. As soon as I saw the default scenes in the DVX200 before and even after the first firmware upgrade I knew I wasn't going to be able hand over footage shot with it. A few of Barry's scenes have got me close and I'm hoping the new firmware will get me where I need to be.
