Hi everyone

Does the Canon 90D have DPAF in 4k?

Or does the 90D only have DPAF in 1080p?

In a surprising turn of events, Canon announced they will put 24p into the camera via FW (and some other cameras too).

i know, it was a surprise.

you don't think of the overlords at canon as being responsive to the crowd's niose.

anyone have thoughts on the quality of the 90d's video footage?

sharpness? color? soc?

I had some store credit and purchased a M6 Mark II. If you know what you're doing, the footage can and does look like 99% of everything else that's out there besides a handful of the obvious options which are on the next level.

IMO, there are only two levels of quality today; a noticeably true cinematic look and everything else that's just the typical high-quality letterboxed video (YouTubers).

Whether it's the 90D or the a7III or the X-T3 or the GH5, they all look the same at 24p (high-quality video). And you decide what price you want to pay for other features (AF, IBIS, 10-bit, LOG, full-frame, 4K/60p, etc).

Here's a cool video of an expensive cinema lens on the M50 (older sensor than the 90D):

If using the lens adapter the price is pretty close to a 90d, so why not pay a little extra for one? Rather than buying an eos r, I'm looking at 90d or m6 ii as a small cam. I'm leaning towards 90d for screen and type of battery.

Personally, I wanted the smaller and lighter camera with a native small lens (32mm).

I want a 90d now, it looks awesome.

the 90D appears to have some solid video chops ;-)

but if you look at the youtube vids, folks are decrying the 90D's video quality.

they point to image softness, pixel-binning and no all-I codec.

i am also interested in a 90D.

is norbro correct in that all these aps-c cameras produce similar video quality?

(not challenging norbro who has probably has had more of these cameras in hand than me!)

my question is, how good is the 90D's video?

good enough?

good?

stellar?

all good.

Yes, they all produce similar video quality...on 'level 1'.

If you apply critical thinking to your question; what is good for you? What is good enough? Such a description only exists in your own mind. Our minds.

I am looking at the big picture; high-resolution images captured through great video production and then distributed online.

The Canon has great colors, and processing for pleasant 4K video.

Will you be able to shoot on the 90D or M6 Mark II (same video quality) and heavily manipulate in post? Of course not. Is the 90D great for shooting at 1pm in the blazing sun and around reflective surfaces? No. Do other cameras on 'level 1' have a sharper image. Yes.

But if you have great lighting and audio and talent and glass and camera movement and set design and many other aspects of great video production then you will have a great product. And most people are not going to notice the quality difference between these cameras until you get to 'level 2'.

You always inquiry about inexpensive stills cameras that shoot video, so I would imagine; yes, the IQ is good enough for you. (Especially since you thought the SL2 looked great at one point in time.)

I like the 90d for the swivel screen, ability to use my EF lenses and price tag. IQ is pretty far down the list, although swivel screen also contributes to IQ. I saw one video where I thought the quality was good enough for the way I’d use it. At that point, any badmouthing is unimportant. The YT reviewers need cameras to have flaws for their livelihood so you have to step back and ask if they’re issues that would actually impact you personally. What’s your conclusion rob?

You can see in this video by dpreview that the 90D is quite soft compared to the Sony a6400 when you compare the coloured balls at 10:26 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSMegftaVCc&t=657s

Also, at 10:30 when you compare the black and white test patterns filmed between the 90D and the GH5, the GH5 looks way sharper and the 90D more blurrier.

It doesn't look too bad when filming Jordan speaking in the clip at 10:00, but doesn't have that same Panasonic sharpness. It's not horrible or a total write off though. However, I think the Canon XC10 probably gives more bang for buck than the 90D with it's 4K, higher bitrate and better dynamic range.

Those are all fair comments re image downfalls but I maintain that ultimately it doesn't matter if the 90d is more soft because if a project green flags the 90d then it's likely they'll also be able to live with the image from it, despite being less sharp than the competition. Anyway I don't think I'll buy one but I like the look of it. XC10 looks cool too!

i wonder if the 90D would benefit from adding a touch of sharpness to the picture profile.

No, but a touch of sharpness in post works well. The softer look with a high quality piece of glass actually looks pleasant compared to the harsher digital video look of some other options.

But then again who’s going to really notice online besides when zooming in on charts and such.

I’ve not yet used the 90d, but have made many comparisons of its predecessors with the competition. I generally agree with NorBro’s comments above, perhaps I'd go a bit further on Canon’s excellent color out of the box, and quite decent ergonomics. Ultra-Sony-sharp isn’t something important in my projects, which are about people and their stories.

Having transitioned to teaching, and semi-retired from production after 35 years, there’s also the economics. I have a great collection of glass for my needs that helps keep me Canon-loyal. And that full-swivel LCD...

I was excited by the 90D's features and have been frustrated by my XT-3's AF issues. I know that the DPAF even on my 80D is better than the Fuji AF as far as tracking and accuracy. I rented the 90D for a shoot a couple of weeks ago as a C camera. I was disappointed by the video, it's basically just 4K 80D. I like my 80D and still use it to shoot stills but in comparison to my XT-3, the 90D looked like mush. Soft, the colors weren't as vibrant and since you are talking 4:2:0 8-bit, you really can't do much with them as far as post before they fall apart. Luckily I heard the January FW coming from Fuji should mitigate all or most of the AF issues. I was tempted by the 90D but the Fuji is in another league for sure.

4K in these Canon cameras (90D, M50, R) is a gimmick. It crops from the sensor and really does nothing more than exaggerate rolling shutter artifacts.

I was also amazed that, on release, Canon had somehow decided that 24p was not necessary in the 90D. A firmware update Has added it back in, but still...

I do love my 80D for stills, and it’s fine for small-budget corporate/non-profit shoots in 1080p, but I saw absolutely no reason to move to the 90D.

So, now that they added 24p via firmware update, I have a couple of questions:

1) Can the Canon 90D shoot 4K 24p with DPAF?
2) Does it have clean HDMI output? If so, is it 4K 10 bit 4:2:2?
