Dec 1st Status Check

If we were close, I'd take you up on it. I'm in Missouri. Shipping wood is probably expensive. :)

Just got finished filming our second day today, with a third FULL (13 1/2 hour) day tomorrow. We've got WAY more shots we'd like to get than time's allowing, but at least we're getting the critical full coverage shots, with some important inserts.

The stunt coordinator has also become a MAJOR asset to on set visual effects with spark explosions, use of his plugged 8mm blank guns, fan(s), rigging, etc. Our antagonist got LAUNCHED at least 15 feet back, catching about 8 feet of air in the process ... awesome.

We're insanely pleased with the Letus35 adapters we've picked up, shooting with Nikon 100mm AI, Canon 50mm FD, and Canon 100-300 zoom FD lenses. Incredible DOF, and nice picture over all.

In the 11th hour we picked up a gal that's the youngest film maker to ever be accepted into the Milan International Film festival with a short she did ... she's our script supervisor / 1st AD ... what a shot clock Nazzi! I've deemed her a necessary evil, as she's not nice about it, but well worth having on set.

Hmmmm . . . I feel sick.

cool, nbcshooter, at least i´m not the only one...so far, i have nothing.

has anyone ever worked with/ built puppets?

Envision- Dude! I feel very inadequate right now. How I am supposed to compete with this guy! Pro stunt guy, pro props. Lenses! Wow, can't wait to see your film!

Hello everyone.
I have flight tickets for tuesday. We will be going to an Island in the Atlantic ocean, where our sci-fi shortfilm will take place. Quite a impressive scenario.

Now, i still don´t know how i am going to take a 6 meters long Jib with me. It comes in light pieces 2 meters long and 15 cm in section. I was thinking to put them inside ski bags, but i guess the guys from the air company will believe I think they are idiots (where i am going is around 25ºC and there are no mountains).

So, does anyone help me with a good idea?

It's all carefully planned. The folks spending ridiculous amounts of money on this are just making the rest of us feel like "why bother?" It cuts down on the competition so we don't have to wade through 80 films again.

Me, I've hired a screenwriter, a cameraman, a sound guy, someone to do the costumes, an editor, and three down-on-their-luck SAG actors.

Yeah, I'm a filmmaker. It says so right on the credits.

Just remember . . .

(And I don't mean to disparage anyone!)

A lot of money and effects don't make a bad movie good.

If you have a good, well-executed script, it'll show. People who vote in these contests have pretty good filters for differences in budgets. No one's out of the running just because they can't hire pros.

I agree. It's the story, and the execution. Decent cinematography, with good acting, and well paced editing, with a dynamite story will win this thing.

Trust me, waltind and I don't believe we'll take first, just because the bar's been set SO incredibly high from the Zombie Fest. That said though, we also both know we would not have done nearly as well had we not partnered up together.

I can also say that this production value will smoke ANYTHING I had in DEATHMARCH (even the news cast, which I rec'd a lot of compliments for), mostly because I had a team of people to work with, some of which were pros at what they do. Am I going to pleased with what we have? ... I absolutely know I will, just even based on seeing what we saw on the monitor, let alone when we're done with post.

But again, let me recap on that first opening sentence ... the bar's been set high. I've also heard from Curugon (Sam), who's been very quiet on this thread. He's entering again ... oh, and he's excited about the idea they've got. YIKES! :)

And lastly, I think our total budget on this will be WAY less than $500 hard out of pocket costs (not counting reusable equipment, etc.) ... well over half of which was for food. We've bartered services for locations, and had people just donate their time because it sounded like fun & they liked the story (our full short will be 10-12 minutes - we'll have a 6 minute cut for DVXfest).

So if you're not finished yet (or started), ask, ask, ask. If you don't ask, the answer's already "no", so you have nothing to lose. Check into Craig's List, and you'll be amazed what you can find.

Dec. 12- Finally got in touch with a local band. We are going to be using one of their songs for a scene in the movie, and the closing credits. Also started working on some background plates for a shot that I might have to do green screen.

(Edit: I had the name of the band, but thought it might be perceived as publicity, or promotion of the short)

Actually, I think a number of posts are verging on publicity.

David, if no one is listing names of people involved, specific locations, etc., how can it be publicity?

Perhaps this thread shouldn't even be open then, as from what I can see everyone is just giving updates of what's happened, peppered with excitement or remorse about what's worked & what hasn't?

I don't see any publicity here, but perhaps I'm not understanding the definition of it. I thought it was no specifics such as footage, pictures, images, scripts, storylines, etc.

Let me know if you were referring to me, which if so I'll apologize now & just keep stone quiet going forward.

I am new to the board and even though I will not be entering anything now I plan on starting production in May 2006. I have my screenplay 3/4 complete, locations 100% and am now trying to decide on renting or buying my equipment. I have resigned myself to using Cannon's xl2 (I have a very small budget and a small crew for that matter). I forgot to mention that I have free access to the editing and sound equipment through our local public access station (most offer production programs to the public - check your out). I also have access to P150s but do not like the grainy look of the final product.

Now that I have finished a year of research and three months of writing I feel confident that I will keep my deadline. I have some questions though.

1) Is anyone on this board in Texas?

2) Do any of you have an opinion on the XL2 or cost comparative camera?

3) Have any of you taken advantage of the free screenwriting and production software on the net?

I now use Page2Stage Screenplay software but still use the free production software.
