D5200 Anyone got it ???

Finally got free time and was in the rush so we started filming a short film today with a super small crew (just 3 friends, 2 of them acting, one holding the reflect and me running camera and boom because we were in a rush and they have never used a h4n zoom before) and thought I would drop this frame grab off right here, straight from the camera and will have more coming soon.

^ that's looking VERY good!!

The only potential issue I see is the highlight in her arm. And not because it's looking bad, just because I'm not 100% sure it would go on being OK when she changes position and we get more of a gradient to a bigger highlight blowup, Apart from that -which in any case, is a potential issue, not an issue for me in this particular image- LOOKING BEAUTIFUL!

Тhere is croma clipping on her right hand, something NO NO, in film, no matter which camera.. that's danger shooting in direct sun... diffusers must have, in conditions like this.(if this shot going in film)
on side note it does look like DSLR, medium wide shots, not having enough detail, soft skin, GH2 imho in this reagards, would look more cinematic.

I haven't seen Musgo, but barring that, this looks better than most GH2 footage I've seen (especially shot under this conditions: available light with a reflector is not what the GH2 likes).

Yes, I have some reservations regarding that highlight, but it doesn't look really bad to me. Just dangerous: it could be bad 5 frames before or after this one.

And in any case: this is a very-low-quality JPG with lots of compression artifacts (43 KB for a 1000x563 image), I don't think you can judge detail out of here. I was just talking colors and general image.

It also doesn't help that I overexposed the shot trying to get all the shadow detail. I am loving the nikons colors and can't wait to use it some more. Just kind of sucks that I get no exposure meter with some or my lenses

Had a play with the Iscorama and 35mm Summicron-r 720p 60p. I couldn't see what the hell I was doing and underexposed by 3+ stops!

It looks like the Super-8 stuff from when I was a kid.

* Your kids are stars already!
* It does look like vintage footage (a bit too sharp for 8mm maybe, given how sharp previous tests have been)
* That's why you need a histogram/waveform
* On my T2i, I had to lower LCD brightness quite a bit because otherwise exposing by eye would lead to severely underexposed footage; does the D5200 allow that?
* WTH man? I woke up REALLY EARLY this morning to watch the Formula 1! You Aussies better give me an awesome race tomorrow because I already set the alarm clock and yes, it's damn early again :)

Yeah an EVF is an essential item, the z-finder frame doesn't sit flush on the LCD and falls off!

Yeah you can adjust LCD brightness, but tose kind of high contrast conditions without a histogram or zebras you're dead in the water.

I did a lot of post sharpening on that one, I was surprised how well I could recover it from -4 stops, the noise looks very organic and the FPN isn't distracting. The colours are a bit muted but I like the look.

If you have the camera set for video, and take a still:
* does it use all the parameters you have set for video, or are they different? (shutter, ISO, picture control)
* can it give you a histogram directly on the preview, or do you have to go into image playback? (and maybe then hit some extra button?)

And an awesome race it was :) :) :)

Yes if you take a still picture while in live view it does use the same parameters that you have set for video (shutter, ISO, picture control)

No histogram in preview you only get that during playback. You do get the exposure metre in live view but it does not display once you hit record.

I tested a D5200 in a store and its Live View mode appeared to work the same as my D5100. Nikon's notorious aperture glitches are not the only pitfalls to beware of. If you set up AE-Lock to lock down the camera's auto-exposure features for a video shot, snapping a photo in Live View mode will take a correctly exposed still, but it will then silently reset your exposure settings and sabotage your supposedly locked-down video exposure.

With Nikon cameras, any time you switch out of Live View mode (e.g. snap a photo), you should assume that the aperture and all auto-exposure settings have been reset. The camera should automatically turn off the AE-Lock for you, because it works properly only as long as you remain in Live View mode. You can shoot mulitple video clips in Live View, but once you snap a photo or use the viewfinder, you should redo your exposure before taking another video.

Nevertheless, taking a photo is one of the best ways to check exposure on Nikon cameras. You can set up the playback review to automatically show you the RGB and luma histograms along with a thumbnail of the photo. If you use it, just be sure to turn off AE-Lock after snapping each photo and returning to Live View mode.

^ Thanks for the tip. In any case, that seems a reasonably contained problem. As far as it doesn't change the settings if you use only the M mode with manual ISO, WB, etc, it would be good enough for me.
And anyway, I'm having second thoughts: I may keep my 5N and spend my cash on a speedbooster instead. I get gear-crazy way too often, I don't need a new camera right now, I don't need a new camera right now, I don't need a new camera right now... (hope this works...)

Hehe. The 5n does resolve more detail (with an aliasing penalty). And it has 1080p 60p. And it's compatible with every lens. And it has kelvin control, And you can mount a loupe to it. That help?

And colors are nice, and it has nearly as much DR, and it has a histogram permanently on-screen, and it's very small and I already have it.
Thanks. This should help me go by for another week or so... :)
