D4 - do not get too excited

canon tech1: "Hey'd ya see the specs of the FS100/f3/af-100"

canon tech2: "Yea ain't that cute, i think they actually want to compete with us in the large sensor cam"

canon Marketing 3: "will you two get back to work already, i want that EOS C300 product ready for rape by spring, just use the 3 year old digic 4av 8bit, 60 fps 720p, found in a $ 3000 camera and we will price it at $ 20 000. We surely will have some of our fanboys that will defend us and last but not least don't forget to remove the $ 5 headphone jack of the 1dx. Yes we have some consumer raping to do."

first off, do some 5 second research before you call someone a fanboy, i own and operate sony, panasonic, and canon all the same. second. you're now comparing photo cameras to video cameras. go ahead and complain about video features the d4 or 1dx or EOS C don't have, it's unintelligent no matter how you dice it. they're photo cameras.(unless you thought i meant the C300, which is not the EOS C prototype)

and thirdly, the c300 will not be 20 grand, and WILL be a video camera with video features, with a built in recording format that you can hand strait to a network. and as for the EOS C it can be speculated to be in the 4-6000 range and an image i would say at the very least cuttable with the c300

cheerios

Wow imdjay...I honestly believe you read into it wrong. He just used your joke to say what a lot of folks have been venting about since the specs on it (C300) was released. It wasn't a personal attack. :)

hey you could be right, though the items i brought up were relevant still. it does indeed get me annoyed when the whole "DSLRs are expected to have every video camera feature" topic arises.

and being that the c300 was announced as under 16K, if they decide to compete with the f3 at around 13K, i'll be sold. it's a video camera with video features in a hybrid body, it's what many people have been asking for, but of course when it comes around, everyone expects it to be the same price as a 5D.

and there's the chance canon will do more than they even should with the EOS C, being that they are branding it in the same vein as the c300. if that camera turns out to be c300 quality but without NDs, sdi, and some of the other trimmings, but at around 5K, that'll be something i can't imagine anyone can complain about.

less than 5 years ago the ex1 was the only camera under 10 grand that had a full HD sensor over 1/3". and bit for bit, it gets at least as much use as my 5D, if not more.

+1 Exactly my thoughts.. The D4 is a step into the right direction.

PS: I'm guessing the 5D Mark III will be Canon's response video-wise.

What is this magical "Mark III" you speak of? I've heard tale of it, in the smoke shrouded taverns in the North Lands, but like the Holy Grail, it remain elusive...

Seriously, if Canon waits any longer to bring it out, all that mojo that was built up in the past 3 1/2 years will have evaporated, 'cause the C300 sure isn't going to fly off the shelves at $16,000.

"it does indeed get me annoyed when the whole "DSLRs are expected to have every video camera feature" topic arises."

Sure... but asking for a headphone jack isn't asking too much, is it?

Did you notice the EOS?
That tells it all!
Actually, these days EOSHD is more of a GH2 fan, seems he just got the name since it was Canon that really started shaking up the video world with DSLRs, and it stuck. He seems impartial to one brand over another. Having said that, he does seem to make conclusions a bit too quick, and seems to market himself and his website quite blatantly. As for his article, I wouldn't worry until it's out and tests are done, because he made the conclusion about scaling based on a comment on 4:2:2 subsampling, and he took it to mean line skipping. People have corrected him on his own website, but he hasn't taken the time to update/correct his article for whatever reason.

Let's just wait and see how it turns out, I have high hopes!

Ok now with the release of the D800 a little sister to the D4 for around $3000 maybe we can begin to get excited that Nikon has jumped in to HD video with both feet in a big way,
so even though nether camera is in our hands yet and there still maybe issues to deal with, I revise my first statement in this thread to now "I am so excited".

Just looked through Barnaby Brittons first impressions of the D4 on Dpreview. On the first page - under Key specifications - he mentions: "10fps shooting with AF and AE, 11fps with focus and exposure locked, 24fps 2.5MP grabs". That 24 fps performance sounds interesting, though since the camera is "only" specified for 400,000 shutter releases, it could be an expensive way to shoot a low budget feature (if you wanted to keep the camera!). Nevertheless, it's interesting to see what the processor is capable of. Here's the link:

I would be extremely impressed if you could fill a card shooting continuous 24fps 2.5Mpx frames. If were talking fully downsampled still exposures, and you could fire em off with the shutter held open - nothing else could really compare.

I'd buy it day one and run it until the shutter begs for mercy

EDIT: Just found this in the brochure:

• FX-format photographs taken in movie live view (16:9): 4,928 × 2,768 (L), 3,696 × 2,072
(M), 2,464 × 1,384 (S)
• DX-format photographs taken in movie live view (16:9): 3,200 × 1,792 (L), 2,400 × 1,344
(M), 1,600 × 896 (S)

So.. 2464x1384 at 24fps? Assuming no shutter since its in Live View. Now Max Continuous Burst is the question. Usually at 100 on Nikon cams? This would need to be at least 4320 for 3 minutes of 24fps footage.

I have been very curious about that little talked about function.

Thanks for the extra info. Should know more about the number of burst frames (and everything else) soon. At this quality I could accept 1 minute long takes (60 x 24 = 1,440), though as you say we'll probably not get it. The thought of shooting movies in still mode is so attractive - to finally use the imagery that these cameras are capable of in the service of story telling! Will that come this year?

Still waiting for a response from Nikon on the matter. Wouldn't be surprised if they didn't even know the answer.

Thank you, for keeping this in mind. What email or contact method did you use? I could shoot them an email as well.
