D4 - do not get too excited

From my calculation, shooting in quiet mode would be around 13 minutes maximum before the buffer is full.

If it works that way, we still have to crop 2.5mp to avoid any vignette.

And, no sound recorded.

13 minutes would be more than enough. (allow longer is always better!) but this would be more for indie film uses. Anyways, Nikon says they have the function, we'll see what exactly the result is. =/

Last thing is the LOMO Anamorphic with OCT-18 (or 19 or PL) mount would not be able to mount on the Nikon body. So we'll have to use other prime that has F mount and lose the single focus mechanism.

Do you think the timing between each still shot on the camera in burst mode is always exactly the same and is exactly 1/24th (or 1/23.98th) of a second?
I would be suprised if it was.

Bad News from the manual (P.60): It takes 5 seconds of JPG images at 24fps.

Oh well, maybe they'll get it right next time :\

The manual is out. has anyone checked it?

I had attempted to download the manual earlier today, but had to run out. Glad you found it, but a bit sad of the findings.

That's torn it! For a moment there I enjoyed being so wrong...
Yeah, it sounded too good to be true, so I didn't have much hope, but I am more let down than I thought I'd be, haha. =)
As plasmasmp said, hopefully they'll get it right next time. Though, by then it won't really matter. In 2 years, there should be something else out worth while.

Looks like another season of 'good enough for the web" products, or go with 1/3" or spend $10K. For the next year, I'll mainly be using 1st gen dslr, Red, and 1/2"-2/3" sony xdcams like the 350. I definitely don't want to spend any more personal money on the dslr revolution, which looks to be turning into a quiet revolution. I am sure people will continue to do amazing things with these "2nd Gen" dslrs, as they did with the previous ones, especially since the newer ones are a bit better. But since the image isn't drastically different (unless you're shooting moire prone subject matter, in which case, wtf shooting with dslr?), I think I can wait a year, and get something on a sale, or maybe NAB will have a surprise? Haha, i'll go ahead and keep my fingers crossed anyway. The most exciting thing for me so far, is the Time-code in dslr. That is pretty cool. The other things are welcome too. They improve the image. The only reason I am not psyched is because it is still somewhat consumerish video compression and resolution. Oh well, that doesn't stop me from using a 60D, and didn't stop me from using the D90.

What I look forward to maybe in 2-3 years, is better displays. The Dolby 4200 looks like it could be amazing, hope some of that trickles down in a few short years.

Well, now I am just writing because I was looking forward to these camera announcements, but now that my next few projects no longer need a dslr, the wind is out of my "camera-fever" sails. Which is nice, as now I get to forget about the latest technology announcements for at least 6months.

So I just read the manual and I couldn´t find if it´s possible to set a FX lens to take photos and video in DX mode. ANyone?

Not sure about the D4, but the D800 can. I saw someone do video, on dslr new shooter, where they change the aspect from FX to DX in video mode while using an FX lens. Of course, I do not know the details on how to do this, but hopefully the video is self explanatory enough.

Change the crop modes on Nikon FF35 camera in live-view:

Just watched Filippo's vid. http://vimeo.com/35899278

Very, very nice feel and highlight rolloff.

And 5 seconds of video at that res... yes, it's a bummer, but a FUN bummer. Those are going to be 5 tremendous seconds. (And beats the GH2's 1 sec burst at 40fps...)

Awesome, so that´s pretty self explanatory then. Good find. Not the easiest menu but it´s there.

Apparently you can assign your function button to switch between FX and DX format modes, so with that set it should only take a second or two to switch.

Let's keep this alive a little longer. I just got a reply from Nikon and they said it would run for as long as the buffer had room.

Nikon tech support wrote:

"It is totally correct that the camera shoots at 24 fps in silent mode until the buffer has reached his capacity. Once the images have been recorded on the memory card you can go ahead so it's also depending on the speed class of the card.

Regarding your second question I can tell you that in the image area automatically is selected DX-format when a DX-lens is attached.

Choose the aspect ratio and angle of view (image area). Thanks to
the camera’s FX format (36.0 × 23.9 mm) image sensor, you can
choose from angles of view as wide as those supported by 35 mm
(135) format film cameras, while automatically cropping pictures
to the DX angle of view when using DX format lenses. " - end

So, it will be interesting to see what an XQD will do in this mode, and whether tech support or the manual is right....(or whether they basically mean the same thing).....

Hi everyone some great info here...i was wondering would the Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8g be a good wide to go with the d4 ? I need to shoot architecture video & still. After i get D4 / wifi dongle and ipad 3 ill have about $2500 .I also have dx lenses already from my d90 so im making quite a jump lol. The Nikons multi media approach is what sold me on this camera.

PS. Im also very interested how this camera will hook up with the new kessler fusion motion control system..i mite be dreaming but controlling say focus / exposure over time with key frames as well as motion easily blows my small mind.

If you're shooting architecture and video, why are you choosing the D4 over the D800? Also, the 14-24 f2.8 is a well respected lens, can't go wrong, though it depends really what kind of architecture photography you're doing. Sooner or later you will want to use a bellows, or tilt shift lens.

Quite the jump.

Hi James0b57

I assume you won't be using the 14-24 for shooting tigers. Tiger jump.
