D4 - do not get too excited

Emailed them through site and got a ticket, also been emailing people testing the cameras.
Okay, I will try that.

I have heard the feature referred to as 'screen grabs' at 24fps. So, hope that doesn't mean they go through all the trouble to save jpegs of the compressed video, haha. Good luck in your search. I may be bowing out of the camera race for 2012, but I will try to help find out more about that feature. It sounds interesting.

If anyone is wondering if this 24fps 2.5MP function is real, or has any validity, just read this page:

http://www.nikonusa.com/Learn-And-E...ology/ftlzi4ra/1/Live-View-Shooting-Mode.html

which states:
"Quiet and Silent Live View modes
When shooting in situations that are sensitive to the sounds of a camera shutter, the D4’s Live View offers two solutions to keep camera noise to a minimum.
The quiet shutter release keeps the mirror in the up position and you will hear minimal noise when pressing the shutter button to take a photograph. This is similar to when using the Quiet mode when you’re not in Live View. You can shoot up to full resolution images in Quiet mode or Quiet Live View mode.
When using the Silent shutter release function in Live View, the mirror remains up and the shutter remains open; which can be quite useful during events such as shooting inside of a courtroom or sporting events such as golf. The Silent mode allows you to shoot at either 12 or 24 frames per second in 4:3 aspect ratio for 2.5 megapixel files."

The 4:3 aspect ratio would also make it potentially a compelling anamorphic shooter. hmmmmm?????

4:3 would be amazing to use with Lomos. Finally a real use of a 2x anamorphic lens.
Wouldn't that also put the resolution somewhere approaching 3k effective resolution? (2.5MP at 4:3 aspect ratio = 1824 x 1368, then x2 anamorphic would stretch it out a bit for more perceived resolution) Anyways, better than 16:9 HD anamorphic which has just under a third less vertical resolution, and nearly the same horizontal resolution, if I am calculating all of these things correctly.

Don't get too excited yet. We have no additional information, except for what is in that Nikon link. No one with direct knowledge is talking about this feature in depth.

Do you guys really think so?

In about 100 minutes of footage, the shutter would need to be replaced, not a good goal to have. I don't see other way to put this to work it out.

The article says "the mirror remains up and the shutter remains open" so, no shutter counts. It is a live view function.

The problem is Lomos 2x don't cover the FF sensor. However, Iscoramas 1.5x or 1.33x yes. But then, you'd have to crop in the end. It would be higher rez anyway.

EDIT -- around 2.7K tops

That's true. Good thing the camera has DX S35 crop mode. Also FF might be useful for re-purposed lomo front anamorphic adapters on still lenses.

In the end I guess I just want a non-conspicuous camera that shoots like real film to shoot something in the style of the Maysles Brothers. I know I'm gonna start playing with scarlet in the next week or so, but I just want that same power in a DSLR sized package.

I wrote to Nikon asking about the feature. An automated message told me that I would receive an answer within 24hrs. It has been 48hrs. No answer.

Nikon finally responded. They sent me a Jpeg of the regular video modes the camera can do. Total ineptitude, but I expected that.

From my calculation, shooting in quiet mode would be around 13 minutes maximum before the buffer is full.

If it works that way, we still have to crop 2.5mp to avoid any vignette.

And, no sound recorded.
