Convergent Design Ships Odyssey7, New Firmware for Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q on Monday

Mitch,

Could you please provide the steps needed to re-create an account under the new website? I had an account under the old website and also purchased the Sony FS700 Raw Codec upgrade. What do I need to do?

Thank you,
Robert Pfeifer

Try changing your password on the new site with the email you used for your existing account.
When I tried to recover my password, it said my email address was invalid even though I have my printed confirmation from when I originally registered and I know that it is the correct email.

I then tried the section to register for a new account and it allowed me to create an account with that email address. However, when I logged in, I do not see my device or codec license.

Thank you,
Robert Pfeifer

It let you register with the same email address as the old account?

In that case, just re-add your device and I think you may be good to go.

So the firmware isn't out? It still says the old version number on the firmware page.

EDIT: Nevermind, I missed the press release saying it will be released on Monday.

Reading the roadmap:
Sony 4K RAW to compressed 4K - will that be limited to 30 fps due to technical restrictions?
For frame rates of 50/60 FPS and 4K HFR burst - always and for ever the uncompressed path, only?

Oh Boy, what lucky we are - Sony lifted the exclusive use of uncompressed 4K this year. Otherwise, we never would have gotten access...
Limitations are written by what we are confident we can achieve. We know we will be able to properly process data fast enough to generate 4K compressed up to 30p, so that's the promised spec. If we find that with efficiencies we can do more, then we'll do it.

Following the logical progression, yes, the 4K high frame rate material is only promised in RAW, not compressed video. Of course in 4K 120p you are only talking about 440 frame bursts. But they are lovely, full 4K, no apologies unadulterated RAW frames.

That's cool. Does it now properly generate TC when recording when there's an SDI input with paused TC i.e. camera not recording but O7Q is recording. It currently records static TC which screws a lot up.

Any other cats you can let out about the timecode functions?

Come to think of it, can you not let us have the detailed notes yet?

Ta.
Gotta give you something to look forward to discovering on Monday. ;-)

Am I missing something? Exactly where are any improvements for my C500? Did I really have to wait 3 months to apply a 3D Clog to REC 709 LUT and scroll through shot footage? I was hoping for some way to record HD compressed or 120fps.

I realize CD has to cater to ALL their clients but I have been waiting for these promised options since I purchased my Gemini's 18 months ago.

Not going to lie disappointing to say the least.

We actually are working rather closely with Canon, and have done a lot of hidden work within the code based on Canon requests and requirements. It might not mean more features at this time but it does mean improvements in the features present. And there are more to come.

Mitch can I use the Odyssey7 now as a monitor only with RED ONE and when needed can it be used as a recorder with EPIC/Scarlet or DSLR such as D800/5D?
Looking for one product solution to juggle amongst those cameras when needed. Thanks.

Hi Mitch,

Thanks for the update. Several questions

1) MAJOR question. On the website, 4K compressed no longer mentions 60fps, which was a huge selling point of the 7Q. Is 60fps 4K compressed being nixed?

2) 4K2HD 422 compressed 60fps. This is also a major selling point. Is this realistically feasible for us in a reasonable amount of time?

3) What can we expect for firmware time frames? Are firmware updates going to speed up? I certainly hope it's not another 3 months for just another maintenance update.

Thanks and have a nice weekend

We are absolutely confident in 4K compressed up to 30p. Not sure beyond that so do not wish to promise at this time.

We are absolutely confident in 4K2HD up to 60p. First we are finishing 4K compressed, then this. Believe it or not, one actually lays the groundwork for the other. These two could effectively go either way, but it is very clear which one more people would like to see first.

We are re-assessing the firmware time frames. Obviously we have not done so well in that department. I really don't want to make any statements or promises before we go through the assessment, but this is no small issue to us.

Hi Mitch, for the info about the update. Your engineers have obvlously been hard at work! I do have a few questions.

1) For some reason I got the idea that your 4K solution over HDMI might eliminate the "1080p60 over SDI but not HDMI" limitation but I can't find a reference. Was that my imagination? If it isn't possible can you dash my hopes now so that I can look elsewhere for that functionality?

2) Does the Odyssey 7Q support 444 recording over HDMI or is that also a hardware limitation? If it is a hardware limitation will your 4K HDMI solution resolve it?

3) Have you all considered implementing a compressed DNG solution similar to the one the BMD has in their cameras? I am sure it might make a lot people who are currently recording 4K uncompressed raw happy.

4) Are you planning to provide Prores XQ support? It seems like it could be a great fit for some of the 4K2HD implementations.

Thanks!
All good questions. We do not yet have an answer ready for the HDMI capabilities questions. I could talk around it in circles but that isn't helpful. When we do have an answer I'll be sure to explain it in detail. As for now I can state that we will have a path for Odyssey7Q owners to be able to record 4K from HDMI sources. It will also allow 1080p60 over HDMI, but I'm not sure about the 4:4:4.

It is doubtful that we could ever do the compressed DNG format. We did discuss it, but the architecture of the Odyssey7Q was never designed to support it, and we feel that while it may be theoretically possible to achieve, it would also likely be at least another year of development before we could really get anywhere with it. It does not seem a realistic option at this point, especially as we are pressing ahead with our compressed codecs strongly.

We are definitely looking into the new Apple ProRes XQ codec. A decision has not yet been made, but certainly we have some other stuff to do first.

Absolutely. With the caveat that you should look at the specs to make sure it can handle the types of signals you wish to send to it.

Odyssey7 is HD video only. Today it can record 1080p up to 30p, 1080i60 and 720p60. In the future it will be able to record 1080p up to 60p, but this will only be via single link 3G SDI, not via HDMI. The Odyssey7 will never record 4K, RAW or work in MultiStream. Those are what the Odyssey7Q is for. Otherwise in HD the Odyssey7 is a powerful machine with a fantastic screen at an unbeatable price.

Hi Mitch,

I saw the Odyssey 7Q now will be able to capture from the dual-link RGB 444 up to 1080p29.97 from the Sony F3. Is it still planned to release an update that will be able to capture 1080p59.94 from the F3?

Good to see all the other standard from rates, pulldown and 720p signal being available to ProRes recording. This should open up a lot of adoption for C-D. Monitor LUTs will obviously garner a lot of attention as well.

We will support that if we don't already (sorry, VERY long day and gettin' a little zoned).

To get my account working I had to create a new one and then register my O7Q. Nothing else worked for me but the new account was fine. To get the fs700 activation option back, I emailed Erich webmaster@convergent-design.com and he quickly and helpfully got this transferred.

Yes that's what I mean. RAW is just too rich for me with many jobs.

I know nothing of the technology behind a recorder, save to say that my desktop computer can take (5k) raw still photos and copress them to tiff or jpg at maybe 2FPS,

Now for a little box to do that compression at 60, 120, 240 FPS is mind boggling!

While you say raw is too 'rich' (true) it would seem people expectation for converting on the fly are a little over egged.

Maybe consider shooting those raws (where the 07q cannot compress realtime) and then consider doing the compression as a stage of your post.. ie inseryt your raw disc, and instantly output a compressed version using your computer.

To some extent I seem to be in the same boat in that the 07q doesnt seem to be able to compress 60p footy from my F3.

I then can think in two ways - 'moan' that the machine does not do what I want, or 'praise' that at least I can capture 60p, but Im going to have to compress it at a later stage.

Someday, we might get an Odyssey7octo.

Advanced specifications (?)
  • 12G-SDI Connectors.
  • HDMI 2.0 Connectors.
  • Attatchable Odyssey7audio device to ingest audio (multi-channel audio, XLR & Co.).
  • Additional computing power to embed compressed encoding, heading for high colour depth and beyond 4K/30 fps.
  • Separate, dedicated computing channel for remote action and signal transfer to client-Odyssey7 (Director/Customer monitor, Focus pulling) or WiFi Live Streaming (portable Athena).
  • USB 3.0 or thunderbolt connector to access the recording media.
  • GSM-connected ring the bell-function, if new Firmware is available or Mitch has birthday.

Otherwise, you may drop the useless USB. I have better ways to recharge my mobile phone or store chewing gum.
:)
