Convergent Design Ships Odyssey7, New Firmware for Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q on Monday

100 posts here already, as I expected there would be. I think I have responded to all questions as best I can, but if there's anything I've missed please let me know. Also understand that there is more information contained in the release notes that will come with the new firmware as well as the updated manual that will debut at the same time. At least I hope it debuts at the same time, we've been scouring through it for typos and updating graphics & such.

I think there was a question somewhere about the Sony PMW-F3. That camera can output 10-bit 4:4:4 RGB up to 30p. We can currently record that in DPX.

Under developer's NDA, I cannot go into any detail as to the nature of these changes. But they are all to the benefit of the end user and the end result.

And I think I've made it quite clear what we are working towards for our next release.
There is a final question, that has been unanswered (and will stay unanswered).

Three months of time. And such a modest progress from a user perspective.

There might be great code added to the firmware. More stable and reliable programming. May be a flaw box of tiny, useful additions, popping out surprisingly in the new manual. And we have learned, that some sort of assessment is going on to review development processes (you got my gote for that, for sure). And now, you have more office space to hire engineers to lovely Colorado Springs.

We will get the answer to this question in the time frame and feature lists of the next Firmware Release. I am really crossing fingers, knocking on wood, hugging a coala, that the next one will come soon and expand ProRes options.

I have another question Mitch, how much will the urtility drive cost and when's it likely to be available?

Is it just for firmware updates and LUT's or something else? I also presume it's not really needed until user LUTs are possible?

is it SSD or some other form of storage?

thanks.

So what IS your question? ;)

I'm fairly sure its in the 150~ish neighborhood. Maybe a bit less.

Where did you get that price or is it a guess?

Got an email from Amber:

Convergent Design now offers the low cost Odyssey Utility SSD, (CD-SSD-UTILITY, list US$149). It is for Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q firmware updates as well as future functionality such as 3D-LUT libraries for the Odyssey7Q. The Odyssey Utility Drive will not record video files. It is intended for Odyssey7 & 7Q owners who do not wish to tie up an Odyssey SSD with utility functions, and for Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q owners who use their devices as monitors and do not need to purchase the more expensive recording media.

Mitch,

I asked this question of you earlier in this thread and it was never answered. What are the exact steps needed for us to migrate our account from the old convergent design website to the new website. Apparently several other people are also having issues getting their devices to show up on the new website. I tried the password recovery option and it did not recognize my email address. I setup a new account with the same password and my Odyssey is not showing up, nor is my FS700 raw codec option.

How about outlining a step-by-step set of instructions on what is needed.

Thank you,
Robert Pfeifer

After Mitch joined Convergent Design, he took over communication in this place from Dan Keaton.
I guess, we are the rough crowd.

Dan is still active at DV Info. He has stated some more infos about the upcoming release and plans for the releases to follow (e.g. time lapse):

It is interesting to learn, which difficulties have to be met for ProRes recordings: Keeping data rates within a specific target rate means encoding additional attemps. So there is thin air approaching 4K 50 or 60 FPS. I hope, both frame rates or not linked. If 50 FPS is below the threshold and 60 FPS beyond, that would cause some trouble. Maybe, it's already the case, as we do not have 4K2HD 50/60 FPS either.

We collect insights here, we can grab some more over there. And we might look around, if Amber nurtures an additional site. Then we monitor the whole Marketing and Sales crew.

Thanks for your answers Mitch, very appreciated. Any info on the re-registration process would be helpful.
It seems that Erich could not migrate user data to the new website platform. Maybe, because the password has been saved as hash value only (it hopefully is). That could cause trouble, if the new platform uses different technology for user authentification. And observing the DNS trouble they had, even mixing up their email server, I guess they have not beta tested this action.

I guess, sending a friendly email to Erich or Amber will solve this.

The Odyssey Utility Drive is $150 list. Currently it is for firmware updates but will have additional functtions for 7Q users, starting with 3D-LUT library storage. Eventually other useful utility information will be able to be stored there, similar to the way the Alexa has an SD card slot for storing various information. But for now the main reason we introduced it is because many clients purchased the Odyssey7Q and are planning to purchase the Odyssey7 to use only as a monitor and never to record files. So they never purchased any Odyssey SSDs. The Odyssey Utility Drive is the least expensive way we can get them a solution for today that allows them to update their firmware.

All of the website and email issues should be sorted out come Monday morning. If you are still experiencing difficulty, please contact our support desk via email or phone. This is precisely why we wanted to wait until we have staff in the office during business hours to help out. Migrating to new service with the new website threw in some unexpected kinks, but all should be well for tomorrow morning.

Sorry I can't lay out the step by step instructions as requested. I've not gone through the process myself. I'll actually be on a plane when the firmware launches, so our Colorado office is the best bet.

Have a good journey!
In case, Erich could not migrate the user accounts in time: Could you disclose the new Firmware files in the public section of the website, please? The way it was done until last week?

It's a kind of self-obstruction to update support access and firmware the same time, putting the software behind the wall. Then there would be no need to rush the Colorado Springs Office today (here it's Monday already). And Erich has more time to configure the platform (check the footer menu navigation for iOS/Safari e.g.) or assist support in more important cases.

it is not even possible to write an email to webmaster@convergent-design.com: delivery status failure notofication - message rejected by google groups.

i am sure you will sort all this out. i am not in a hurry. if i only will NOT need this activation code for some reason after the firmware update ;)

Goodness, with all that has gone on who's idea was it to update/switch the website at the same time as a firmware update?
OMG!
