It doesn't look like it on my TV.Don't all the sports channels broadcast their sports in at least 720/60p?
8K is needed for VR use unless you like to see every pixel up close. BTW the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be in 8K and the 8K Dell 32" monitor goes on sale March 23 for $5K.Put another way, 8k is pointless. The industry is going to try to push 8k on consumers just like they did 3D. And they are going to get exactly the same results. No value = no sales. Learn the frellin' lesson!
More resolution is not the answer. More dynamic range is, better tonality, smoother gradients, better handling of highlights and in particular clipping (more ARRI-like), fewer and better controlled compression artifacts, higher bit rate recording. And wait for it... global shutter.
I get that it's easier to make 8k than solve the real problems. But do they get that I want to spend my money on real improvements and not useless extra resolution? They will, because I control my money, and I'm not buying 8k. And I'm definitely not alone.

My TV/box has options to choose from...1080i/p, 720p, 480i/p, etc.

No sales? For what? 4K TV's? 4K cameras? Both are doing quite well.
Ya, but this time, it looks like it's connected to some sort of a camera here. Military and surveillance may be their goal in the near term but a camera module can be modded for a more practical purpose too.I haven't watched the video, but isn't that the same sensor they presented in September 2015? link
A fairly well known Vlogger posted a video over the holidays where he opined that Nikon will soon be introducing a "revolutionary" RGBW sensor. I haven't seen anything to that effect anywhere else, although these type of sensors do exist ... mostly for the low light benefits of smartphones. As a lifelong Nikon user, sad to say that the company is rapidly sliding toward irrelevance.
