Canon EOS C300 NEW pricing!!!

I really don't think Canon cares what RED does. Canon competes with Sony and Panasonic. The entire RED vs. Canon is a marketing effort created by RED as far as I can see.

The November showdown was a product of RED. But Canon is now basically competing with RED because they've entered the motion imaging/digital cinema market. At some point I think there will be a Canon camera that reaches into the upper high end.

I think Canon definitely is aware of RED. Remember their little poster when they released the 5DMkII firmware? That sure looks like a playful poke at RED and now we know they had started working on the C300 at the time this poster came out.

I have no doubt that Canon knows who RED is, but I question the extent that many people on forums think that Canon develops their strategies in response to RED. For example, a lot of people thought Canon brought out that 4K concept cam in response to Scarlet's pricing on November 3rd. Not a chance. I don't think Canon is nimble enough to do that.

Yeah, totally agree with you there. If Canon has strategies, the plans are probably drawn up and developed well in advance. Of course, they can change at any time, but Canon has always acted like the slow, methodical type as opposed to reacting wildly to the latest developments. Besides, the C-DSLR was already in their presentation slides during the announcement and it was already in the display case under glass with a little label next to it.

I expect the camera to be within reach. It's all good news for everyone. I never expected to see the $20k price tag anyway. Time will tell.

I really don't think Canon cares what RED does.

They should if they are interested in being a player in digital cinema.

. . .and unfortunately Head-to-head product announcements spattered all over the internet just might be the future, lots of marketing people are looking at this little November goat-rope closely. Who wouldn't want to pile-up thousands of pre-orders on a product before it even hits the street? Its sort of a page out of the Apple playbook.

Come on now. Canon has the resources to be a player in any visual market. They don't have to take their cues from RED. If they really cared what RED does they would have announced a camera that had specs similar to any of the iterations of the Scarlet rumors of the last 3 years. But instead they announced a completely different animal.

You know who Canon paid attention to and reacted to? Themselves. The C300 product is built on the success of the 5D and other DSLRs being used for cinema purposes. Not Red One, Epic, or Scarlet.

We should know the US pricing by the middle of next week......Of course it will not be the 20K LIST price...

I think you all can give yourself a hand here as well as on a few other forums. I definitely think people complained loud enough and frequently enough about the price that Canon heard. It was very, very clear to me after speaking with a Canon rep in Paris, that they targeted the same audience as the F3. When RED fell into line, they decided to price it in at the same level. Basically, I think they held off declaring a finished price because they wanted to see where RED would place itself. The new market level has been established, and it is 14k.

You now have 3 possible choices based on your needs: indie filmmakers and fashion/publicity will go with Scarlet, crossover individuals (photographers and quick turnaround projects, as well as bcam for the Alexa) with the C300, and the more traditional ENG/broadcast environment will head towards the F3. Oversimplification I know, but largely the market in my opinion.

The C300 suddenly looks a lot better. It actually looks like a viable choice now.

The c300 looks f**king awesome, even though I have a scarlet on order I'm still saying that.

ENG. Seriously. Electronic news gathering with a super 35mmm chip. No way. C300 is the indie filmmakers cam. The scarlet is strictly for the big boys that have the time and money to deal with all the post hurdles and bugginess. The canon is the perfect indie cam.

If we are looking for production niche abbreviations, I agree that the Canon is not an ENG cam, but most def a great EFP camera. This camera is going to be all over TV, if this price rumor is correct.

agree totally. this cam will change the look we have on news/interviews nowadays.

c300 looks so unbelievably light ...

thats one thing I love about DSLR's, I don't think twice, just bring the cam everywhere I go. Now I know this looks a little bigger but still it looks very portable.

edit:
I'm also loving the idea of a 14-60mm T2.8 EF mount cine zoom LINK

C300 at $14000 street would be very nice, but I'm still holding onto my Scarlet deposit for now at least.

Without using the cameras, I see the C300 Pros as being -

-much better battery life
-built in ND's
-HD-SDI (you need an additional module for the Scarlet).
-XLRs (you need an additional module for the Scarlet)
-cheaper media.
-more light sensitive

Scarlet Pros:

-4K (somewhat less real resolution). I work with 4K all the time at work. I like it. I want it for what I shoot.
-More color depth.
-More dynamic range
-Better codec (redcode)

At $14000 the C300 would become very very competitive, and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people switch over once they realize what a pain the a** and how expensive a full Scarlet package becomes.

While I agree that the Scarlet will have more color depth, I think it is questionable that it will have more dynamic range. I do know that the MX chip is somewhere around 12 DR. It is entirely possible that the C300 may have more. We don't really know yet.
