Canon 70d Has Aliasing Moire

At this point I think I'm becoming more impressed with the D5200 over mid range Canons. These videos aren't exciting or graded with film looks, but the first shows what the sensor and codec can do when a lot of other cams would get mushy. Lots of leaves/tress/ subtle light changes. Reminds me of C100 footage really.

The second one shows that it can maintain with a lot of bricks and building edges around.

The D5200 and D7100 have a very nice image: no aliasing/moire, best DR on a DSLR, nice colors, relatively good codec, plus clean hdmi 422 if you want to use it. It's nowhere near as sharp as a C100, though. But it would clearly be my recommendation for anybody willing to spend at least $700 but not quite $2000.

Hi samuel, I don't know if you have seen my test http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?310503-Nikon-D7100-vs-Panasonic-gh2-sharpness where I compare my gh2 to my D7100. In the test many got it wrong and many more did not commit (from the view count), because they are so close. I myself have been stunned by the result, because there was a general feelings from forums that the gh2 was much sharper, which is not the case. Now if the d7100 is nearly on par to the gh2, then it will be close and no slough to the C100.

I know you tested the D5200, but from some report they said that the D7100 was sharper and then even some more report that the recording from external recorder was even sharper. I am getting a ninja very soon and will be testing it with the D7100. For me, I have been looking at footage from the D7100 on My 50 inch plasma and it was more than sharp enought, it compared well to 1080p blockbuster movies with the internal codec.

All great news for Mosaic. At this point it looks like for most cameras it will be the quick fix for an extra added cost.

Wonder how the new autofocus will perform with mosaic filter, Say you get the great shot an then booooom, Moire on a window or a roof or a shirt, , if this is used for production is got to have the mosaic.
but again , will the autofocus be affected ????

Yes, I'm one of those who didn't commit :)
I was on oliday and couldn't download the original files, so I had absolutely no idea which was which. I just did the blind test again, this time with the full res files, and I guessed right, so, there's a difference. It wouldn't worry me even a bit, though: once I have, say, 700 lines, I take DR and clean image over resolution, every time.

Wow. Love the AF and rack focusing. But holy moly. That moire is crazy. Way worse than 5D II, I think worse than the 7D actually (which I used to own) and much worse than the 6D (which I currently own).

Hmm...I cant agree about the moire...of course its there in many shots, but I dont think any of the models you mentioned would have done any better in those shots...anyway only a side by side can show the truth about that...
I agree about the AF of course...that thing is really amazing...might be enough reason to have that camera...
To my eyes the overall image looks slightly better than the previous models in terms of sharpness and detail...may be due to the higher bit rate or the super sharp lens...? Or just may be because I want it to be...:) ?
Anyway...time will tell...side by side comparisons should be coming shortly...! And please....somebody give me a high ISO comparison...

This is from the final release version, Good things However Moire and aliasing in many shots, This what it is

He's just using the standard picture setting so that might explain any moire problems. He did none of the standard DSLR procedures that would be used to minimize such artifacts.

If they put that AF into the 7DII, I will buy one, but I doubt it will come with that articulating screen. That sure would come in handy shooting nature and wildlife, particularly form treestands or behind trees when you have to swing around, at which point you would not be able to see a flat screen.

Yes...they will put that AF in the 7DII...and no...it will not have that articulating screen...but guess what...it will have a headphone jack...and then we will all go nuts...:)

Reducing contrast and sharpness has a light improvement over moire patterns.
The only solution is VAF filter, but the new auto focus system performance would be the same ? good question

Comparison with previous generation Moire is the same all it really has is better auto focus

Yup. Moire looks the same. Disappointing but not surprising coming from Canon. The auto-focus does look interesting though. Especially the face-tracking feature. Curious to see how well that feature would work with say, the Movi or BeSteady brushless gimbal rig? If it tracks as well as it does here, that could eliminate the need for a focus puller on certain moving shots.

Interesting...
