Canon 70d Has Aliasing Moire

My biggest investment now is to see how much better I can make the tools work I already have.
Me too.

In my very personal case, I've concluded that my gear is way ahead of my ability. My guess is that this is also true for >90% of shooters out there.

I agree to the above...I just feel I could use a bit or even a lot better low light performance for what I do...mostly weddings with bad lit reception halls, where Im forced to use on camera led lights to get usable footage even when Im shooting at 1.4!!!
So Im waiting to see how that new 70D will be in that aspect...if not good...my only option is the 6D...

If you are getting paid you should find a way to own a 5Dmk3. It's the best option for low light, moire etc. I rented one last week for a major shoot and was blown away with the image, and that was just shot nutral dialed down recorded H264.
You can also consider a 5Dmk2 with a mosaic AA filter.

We all wait for years for Canon to add even one useful feature, and I don't mean a touch screen. And ML is launching killer features monthly for free. I haven't used ML up to now because the quality was good enough, but now with BMCC and other low cost raw options, straight Canon H-264 just won't cut it. Canon won't likely ever release raw on a sub $3 to $5,000 camera if ever. I'm selling the 60D and maybe use the money to get some fast SD cards and a few 2TB HDs for my PC, then just hot rod hack the 600D to hell.

Yes at this point there is a lot of footage showing how 70D has the same problem than the 4 years old 7D, and will have it for the next 4 years, masking
such a huge defect with a faster focusing system that is not even honest. Time to choose a different brand

I bought the Nikon d7100 last week and like anything else, it has it's issues, but I've been very impressed with the images I've gotten from it.

AND IT HAS A HEADPHONE JACK!!!

...I have a horrible feeling that Canon is protecting the video turf of it's more expensive cameras ( 5D Mk3 and C100 ), and that it will take serious competition from other brands ( Panasonic G6 / GH3, Nikon D5200 / D7100, Blackmagic Pocket Cine Camera, Sony NEX-6, etc... ) to get them to change their mind about creating a high performance / low-cost video DSLR. ( I would love to see Nikon or Panasonic make their version of the C100 )

I'm all set with buying new dslr's from Canon, I will keep what I have for projects that call for it. I but until Canon stops insulting it's customers with this incremental crap, I will never give them another dollar of my money. It's mindl blowing they still don't have 1080 60p in the majority of their dslr's, headphones, peaking, ect.... Send the message with your wallet, they will eventually get it.

It seems Nikon has jumped ahead of Canon in this bracket. 2 models with extremely diminished moire/aliasing and clean HDMI for bypassing the internal codec. Canon has zero models under $3,000 to offer these improvements. They have one DSLR under $5,000 that has reduced moire/aliasing and a clean HDMI. The MK3. It's quite a model too with Magic Lanterns intervention, it's the only one I'd buy for video right now.

Rumors are....metabones m43 to canon ef next month ....I believe that solves the problem for those stuck with alot of glass . I had hopes for the 70d . I would have bought it over the g6 and bmpcc . It's obvious canon doesn't care about dslr video. Maybe it's for the best.

I wrote this in the comments on the vimeo video. This comes from someone who is a Nikon photo shooter, who bought a Canon 7D and then a gh2 because Nikon video was not good before and who was going to buy a BMC pocket camera. But finally after testing the d7100 the money went into an Atomos Ninja.

Hi Johnnie, thanks for the independent test. It is hard to get proper testers these days, that are not bias to certain brand.
I would invite you to test an aps-c dslr that has no moire/aliasing problem, about the same high resolution video than the gh2, very good low light which is close to the 5dmark3 and has about 12 stop of DR. More so that you have clean uncompressed hdmi output in a weather sealed body for $ 1200.

It is really sad that no known reviewer has taken a little time to test this camera which is the Nikon D7100. When I see all these people that are going through disappointment after disappointment with the Canon dslr, when you have other brands that are at least innovating and no one reviewing these brands, it is a pity. This comes from someone who as Nikon shooter bought a Canon 7D because Nikon was no good in video during those days.

You can see some test I did below
Sharpness test against the panasonic gh2, It is a blind test and as you can see it is so close that no one really knew which is which

Every camera's got it's own problems. I've looked at a lot of nice videos from the d5200 and the d7100. Nothing's perfect as we all know, and the problem with the nikons' is that little aperture glitch. If it wasn't for that , I might have bought the d5200 already, that and the canon glass in my closet. I'm patiently waiting for the m43/ef speedbooster instead. I think in the long run, Panasonic has demonstrated it will run ahead of the herd. I might be convinced if nikon released an aps mirrorless camera , however. And lets's see if they can tweak that toshiba to shed the fpn in the next gen.

In my own tests comparing my GH2 and GH3 bodies with the Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 lens to the Nikon D5200 with the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 ( non VC ) lens, the GH2 easily pulled ahead of both the GH3 and the D5200 in terms of fine detail when shooting at 1080 24p. ( using the FlowMotion ver 2.02 patch on the GH2, 50 Mbps H.264 on the GH3, and the default 24p mode on the D5200 )

Overall, I was impressed that the video image from the D5200 was such a close match to my GH3 without using custom profiles.

g6 just pulled the trigger

Felipe, I know you really do not like the moire on the 70D, do you really have to try to constantly post about it and hoping someone would change their mind and get the Lumix? I think the best thing you should consider doing is just let it go, everyone has their preference.

btw, the video link on your signature goes to an intro of you, the first part, your audio is a few frames out of sync with the video.

It's called "concern trolling". "I am so concerned about you that I have to post about this..." when in reality they are pushing their own agenda all along.
Besides that, since there are no production 70D's in the wild yet, any footage you see is highly suspect. I could run out and shoot a clip on my iPhone and post it as being shot on a RED Dragon sensor just to get hits or try to make RED look bad, but it wouldn't have jack to do with the real quality of the Dragon.

Canon 70D : "Images are extremely soft, a bit noisy and moire and aliasing are everywhere."

Cinema5D.com : First independent Canon 70D Video Review

...and they specifically say that the camera they had was a beta, not a production camera. This doesn't bode well for the final production camera, but it's not a guarantee that the production units will be like this. Not only that, but there were a lot of the same complaints about the 5Diii when it first came out, and then people figured out that applying a little bit of sharpening in the edit fixed it.
I don't want to come of as a Canon apologist, but it's just too early to trash a camera that isn't finalized or even available yet.

Yes, for a moment I said to my self , no I'll continue with Canon and will try to avoid moire patterns, and suddenly, thought , but why is Canon the only option, how about forgetting about that defect .
Probably your processor or graphic card or even the ram , or all together gave up with my video.
I hate the idea of starting a new system but my coming years are more expensive than a brand ( Canon ) for me.
