1DC: Canon 1Dx mkII to shoot 4k video, 5D mkIV not so much. Also: C100 4k witin 18 months?

A C100 mkIII with 4k XF-AVC and Canon Log +NDs and DPAF… and dare I say it: 10bit… can't be that far out.

But that camera won't shoot 20MP raw photos..

Just looking over the specs from above and it seems Canon still has the still oriented white balance procedure. Maybe this is different but you would think they could have found a way to set WB in a more video -like way by now? This is something I dislike when I shoot with my 5DMKIII. I basically dial WB in visually (fine with RAW video) but this is not cool with codec recording.

While the specs are getting good, my vDSLR purchase days are over. Bring on cameras like the URSA mini 4.6

I like to think the WB options on the DSLRs are pretty good. Not only can you set K, but you can also shift the green-magenta balance in custom settings. Also, you can take a photo and use that as a base for automatic WB.

I get a feeling that is what you want? Shoot something "neutral" and auto WB? Or what are you looking for?

Yes, I just want the 'point it at a white or gray card and set it' type of video camera white balance. Mirrorless cameras can function this way. I just don't care for the take a photo and assign it. That is an old type of still workflow. The dial in the K approach is ok but it seems cameras act better when activate the auto function. I think Barry Green was talking about this recently saying the not all of the channels are used when setting a K number. This was in regards to the DVX200 but I would not be surprised if all CMOS acted this way.

So I am no expert!

No S35 in 1080p. That is almost entirely the mode that I use and part of what makes the camera so useful to me. Hopefully the FullHD mode has the processing that made the S35 mode so much better.

Also, only 1080p output by HDMI and no focus peaking or magnifying during shooting. So, it seems that the additions are HFR, DPAF and increased DR (?) for video with a loss of S35 and CLog. I expected more, but I guess this falls in line with Canon's previous releases.

When you dial in the K(elvin) number you're just adjusting for yellow-blue. A full auto WB would also take green-magenta into account. A benefit of DSLRs is that you can use the custom WB and take green-magenta into account if you like.

Normally, for video, I'd advice against auto WB between different scenes. I find it better to set a constant WB (can be Daylight, Tungsten or a Kelvin number). The benefit is that your color is constant between takes, or at least has a common denominator—any color shots will be due to actual light color. So if you're shooting available light, or practical lighting this is much preferred IMHO. Even if you need to adjust the WB in post, you can adjust all clips in one fell swoop.

Obviously, shooting products or let's say a room or scene for marketing purposes you will want to shoot a color checker to get faithful colors.

True. I just wish they implemented the auto WB set in a more video camera like fashion so you could see the results instantly. Outside of if the best method or not. Just seems quite behind the times for a $6,000 camera imho.

This camera is built specifically for the Olympics. Thats it. Not for film people.

Ya, but for this price, they could have easily accommodated both. And there's still no 4K camera in the $6,000-$8,000 range outside of FS5 and FS7. It's as if the market was rigged (which it is).

You were able to preorder it late last night at ProCam but it looks like they took it off the site...may have jumped the gun.

Shot some sit-down interviews last week for a high-profile college game. One of my friends that I shoot with text me after seeing some of them air and said he liked them. He asked me if I shot them on one of my VariCam's or F55 (we actually shoot a lot of them on tape still so they can be shipped around easily). I told him I shot them on my C300. He asked why and I said simple, I like the way my 300 looks better than my 55.

Why then do you own an F55??

A camera with significantly much better tracking AF than FS5&FS7, much more useful for run and gun
Also a camera with better DR than our 1DC or the FS5/7

I can live without raw.

For properly lilted environment I can live without C-log, especially if I have to give up LV, since i shoot remote more.
