1DC: Canon 1Dx mkII to shoot 4k video, 5D mkIV not so much. Also: C100 4k witin 18 months?

With this 1DXII - I really, really don't see Canon doing 4K/60P.

What does everyone else think?
I doubt it will got to 60p, as well.

I do not think 1DX will be much more than "4K of the same", meaning that it will be higher resolution dslr footage.

Photographers would love to have silent shooting and high fps raw option, but i doubt they will get continuous raw. And this 4k implementation as a true video function will be very average.

I expect the 1DC to still be better for its Canon-log and mjpeg quality. We'll see.

Camera season has gotten so boring.

You know...I actually didn't even think about C-Log because I am absolutely EXPECTING it in the 1DXII regardless of 4K/60p...may have to actually take a step back and consider if that will even be in the camera! But how could it possibly not be if it's in the XC10.

The 1DXII won't have a "C" badge, is the main reason i doubt it will be more than a 4k 5d3 situation.

The XC10 is a "professional video" camera, so that may be why it has a log profile.

I feel there is a tremendous focus on price on this forum. As if for each dollar extra you spend you expect another feature to be ticked—regardless of where the product fits in among a manufacturer's portfolio.

While this reasoning might make sense when comparing cameras in the same product line, like C100 vs C300, you're still going to end up with awkward situations once in a while. One example would be if the C100 moves to its 3rd generation while the C300 is only on its 2nd. Then you might get something in the cheaper camera that isn't there on the more expensive one—yet.

When you start comparing Canon's DSLRs with their cinema cameras, you're even more likely to see feature crossover.

If Canonrumors says it will have 4k60 and they rate it as CR3, I'm honestly taking that as fact, personally. CR grades on a scale for the very reason that some sources are more likely to be correct than others. In my experience CR3 means they've been told by "Canon". By "Canon" I mean a really solid contact with inside information.

While many here would take 4k60 as good news, I'm not sure I agree. If it's the best case scenario, sure: 4k60 with Canon Log and a solid codec. You don't seem to believe that. Probably me neither.

What about this: UHD60, no Canon Log, h.264 90Mbit codec? <---- This would still qualify 4k60 as "true" in my mind, even if I don't consider UHD to be 4k. Let's face it people, we live in a world where people believe that there is such a thing as "american champagne".

It would break my heart if the 1Dx mkII comes with DPAF, a great sensor and s*%tty codecs without Log. And I'm definitely not ruling that out.

I agree that it's possible to have some features on a lower end model that an older higher end model doesn't/didn't have upon release because the manufacturers are working with the staggered 2-3 year product cycles, so a Year 1 high end model may not have what another, lower end, Year 3 model has.

As to the buffer, if 1D XMKII has - let's work off the published, albeit inexact, gossip - 12 frame Raw stills at 22 MPX, then it'll be capable of ... (I ain't good at math) buffer in compressed 4K at 8.3/8.8 MPX. The question is the quality, compression and the duration of a clip. But, since the camera will have something of that kind, 60p is not out of the question. And, for most people, a 4-sec burst might suffice.

A reliable source also mentioned the possibility of a firmware upgrade for the C300 Mark II for 4K/60 in the future...how likely?

LOL!

I'm not a pessimistic person in any way....I am also a Canon user and love the Cinema Eos line. Personally...I don't think there is any chance on this great planet that Canon will give us 4k 60P in the 1DXII. You know how I know this....because deep in the heart of hearts at the Canon factory....behind closed doors...they still LOVE to just piss us off.... but only a little bit....just enough that we'll all keep coming back anyway. :)

If Canon was at a raging college party at the turn of the millennium....they would be the only one there stone cold sober taking keys at the door asking everyone not to touch their mom's favorite rhododendrons. RED would probably be Stifler...I imagine. ...and BMD would be The Shermanator and actually show up a week later because they got the date wrong.

Most interesting info for me is what they'll do with FW inside. Will they completely rewrite it or make it a lot more secure so Magic Lantern will no longer work on it? Or they'll will silently allow it? Even if it won't have 4K by specs I can tell you for sure that with Magic Lantern it will be possible. Not even talking about raw etc. With ML installed it will be a KILLER cam, that's for sure.

I was talking to another friend on the OS used by Canon camera, seems like the OS on the 1DX/1DC is different from the OS used by the 5D3 and earlier models also the 70D is using a slightly different OS.

I wonder if MF will be willing to do it for free? or have the time to work on so many different OS.

I remember even the genuine accessory manufacturer like Manfrotto do not have the resource to update their remotes to let 1DC use them in the first 2 years.

Honestly if the new 1d come with DPAF, 15 stop sensor UHD60 I will go buy it anyway. With Dual Cfast 2.0 ( do not give me Cfast + CF) even Internal Raw at 4k60p is not a problem ( if running raid). If they give me everything I do not mind if Canon charge me the same price I paid for my 1DC on day 1.

Why everyone is still thinking about buffer for video?
The bottle neck on the 1DC was always the CF card no matter if it was the still FPS or the the 4K30p in video.
Since the new camera will be using CFast 2.0 the bottle neck of the old CF card have shifted 4 time further away.
Also for video Canon will try to use the most simple compression codec since it will use the least CPU/GPU resource and hence less heat and battery. Also 1pixel to 1pixel with a crop factor
If they will be using a codex I guess they might as well make a chip with hardware H265 encoding and put it in.

I believe the competitor of the 1DX2 will be Nikon D5 and the A7R2/A7S2. whatever we had discussed or the CR3 spec from C-Rumours already wins all as a late comer ( if the PQ is maintain)

If Canon give us a 1DC2, its competitor will be the FS7, URSA 4.6, and the RED , to counter them my guess is a 4.6K S35 crop video( 22mp sensor), c-log, full time Raw output ( internal and HDMI)
these are just the basic function of the USRA 4.6 using Cfast card and the Canon 1DC's advantage and price premium was always for the performance of the competitor plus weather proof and small form factor and high ISO PQ

I really hope Canon doesn't mess this up...I would love this 1DXII to be a powerful video machine. I am one who enjoys shooting on a DSLR. (And I have three 2.0 cards from my URSA.)

1DC II is rumored for 2017 with 8K.

Canon has 250 Mpx still capability and 125times Full HD capability in an APS-H sensor. However, the video capability is 125 times Full HD at 5fps. So at 25fps it can have video of around 39 times Full HD. Canon's roll out plans is also based on adoption of technology and how estimations of how many pieces will sell at a given price point.

They are likely to release a high spec camera in late 2017.

This doesn't look like a 1D C MKII camera. More like a C700 type.

BTW, I read that the 8K train video really wasn't all that great. Four 4K projectors delivering 8K is kind of cool though. Each projector runs $50,000 too.

Theirs is a working model already. They run four Convergent Design Q7+ units into it and then splice the footage into 8K.
