Camera rumors for 2016?

Here's the some fresh glass news. Samyang has announced that it will release a lens a week for five weeks in a row. Presumably, it won't be the same lens under five different brand names.

The recent Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 just killed the little trust I had on camera and lens rumors. Not a single bit of info about it until Sony released it. Even with several testers playing with them beforehand so the reviews could be out the day of the announcement.

There will be the odd slip and crack here and there, but nearly all rumors are just wishful speculation.

I found lenses are easier to keep on the down low than cameras.

And it also depends on a site - the 43Rumors/Sony Alpha/Mirrorless/Fuji/CanonWatch is the same site run by the same guy out of Germany. His wishes are not always the manufacturers commands. The Canon Rumors and the Nikon Rumors are more conservative in their gossip and will not jump the gun as often.

To switch topics from cameras to the removable media - a review of the new Samsung V-90 rated $256 GB MicroSD card. It almost works up to specs and runs about a dollar per GB.

Two new Canon cameras at IBC?

I don;t know much about the new cameras, apart from the fact that one is their first shoulder camera that is what 90% of C300 users have been banging on about over the last 5 years - give us a proper form factor and viewfinder. In december you'll have it. But prepare to sell your kidney or kid.

To answer your quesiton - USP - biggest - Ergonomics. I (predict) as in I don't know frame rates for sure - it will have high frame rates in 4K , higher than 60 and shot on CFast 2.0 cards. PL mount and option for Raw internally. Frankly, I don't think they will go for a 6K delivery (def Super 35 sensor though) - make no mistake about it - the sensor is probably brand new and more than 6K - for a True 4k downsample.

You're all wrong. Their new big camera is all about ergonomics. If you are chasing higher res than 4K from Canon at this stage you are in the wrong camp - look into a RED.

Their other camera is hm... how to put it - a bit familiar.

I dont know the actual names of what they will end up being called, but I have seen the code names for both new cameras. Other than that I can't say more. Both will be announced at IBC

Unless it's another pro zoom lens (which I doubt, at least not that soon after the 18-80) there will be 2 cameras at IBC. I have not seen them (doubt anyone outside Japan has at this moment) but I have seen official communication from the manufacturer which explicitly lists 2 (coded) items - this was the same case pre-NAB 2015 with the C300 II. So yeah, I can be my bottom dollar we'll see 2 new Canon;s - one big boy and mucho $$$$, one not so big boy camera.

And for those that will ask - No the 2nd item is not the 5D IV - that is getting announced end of August and is a Photokina item (duh), not an IBC annoncement.

I think it might be an XF series cam. Those are the longest in tooth cameras out there almost. They badly need an update.

Would make sense since pretty much every source apart from Canon Watch is saying that there won't be a replacement for C100mk2 anytime soon.

So I finally heard from Sony and in asking my question about closing out the F5, they only said that the F5/55 are "current models" and they are due to have another firmware update in the "fall". I see though that the F5 is coming up on 3 years old in I believe November. Would Sony actually keep that camera around for more than 3 years? Although how is the F5 holding up to competing cameras now? In other words, how would/could they improve the F5? I guess they could give it the F55 sensor and keep the cost the same but then they would have to upgrade the sensor for the F55, which they could potentially do by just changing the sensor and offering it as an upgrade for current owners. I heard Sony talking at NAB and they commented that they heard from customers that they don't want their cameras to become obsolete. Otherwise what could they do to upgrade?

F5/55 were announced in October, 2012 and first shipped early 2013.

Coming up on four years for their hardware.

That being said, there hasn't really been any quantum leap in sensor tech that would justify a new camera right now, especially keeping a S35 sensor. The Varicam for example, has a few features that are better sensor-wise, but they don't quite feel game breaking. I could see a significant body upgrade being useful in terms of enabling 4K ProRes or something like that, and usability could definitely be improved, but it seems like lately the progress has been in making the lower tier cameras better, rather than reaching new heights. Most progress that's been made recently seems to be going hand in hand with larger sensors (RED 8K, ALexa 65), or more friendly form factors (Amira, Alexa Mini, Next Canon, Varicam LT).

Alexa is still going strong. How old was that sensor even at the time they first put it in? I mean, a new/better/improved sensor is great and all, but by far not the only thing worth releasing a new camera for - there's plenty of stuff that can be improved that would justify a new camera without necessarily upgrading the sensor. The sensors we already have are close to being good enough - the ISO, DR and color are not good enough for most purposes? Sure, you can always ask for more, but I think there are bigger opportunities for stepping up. I can fully see tons of things I'd like in a new camera other than a new sensor. As far as I'm concerned - bring it on!

How about an F65 for an F5 price? And in an F5 type body? Wouldn't that be refreshing?

It's easy to attack Sony for their many camera models, but I will note that the F900 was around for almost a full decade, and the FS700 is going on 5+ years at this point. There are plenty of other examples, but Sony will likely keep selling the F5 for several years to come.

It would be refreshing, but it wouldn't be a game changer in terms of tech, only in terms of price. It's still no 6K S35 Alexa...
